2020 NFL Mock Draft: Final Mock 7 Rounds
Round 5
Chris Ransom follow @DraftUtopia Last Updated: April 23, 2020.
Cincinnati Bengals: Hakeem Adeniji, RG, Kansas
- Cincinnati grabs a right guard to push Xavier Su'a Filo for the right guard job. The 6-4 302 lb Hakeem Adeniji has the versatility to play left tackle, left guard, right guard, or right tackle. Right guard is the only position I can see Adeniji having any success as a starter and this is a good fit for Cincinnati to start the fifth round. Worst case scenario you get a backup to Su'a Filo and best case scenario he wins the starting right guard job and holds his own there.
Carolina Panthers: Thaddeus Moss, TE, LSU
- Carolina still hasn't picked a replacement for Greg Olsen in this draft. Thaddeus Moss only slipped this far due to not working out due to an injury that he suffered leading up to the draft which has prevented him from working out, but now Carolina takes a chance on Thaddeus hoping the snag a starting tight end in the fifth round.
- The 6-2 250 lb Thaddeus Moss is the son of former NFL wide receiver Randy Moss. Thaddeus has big shoes to fill with Greg Olsen no longer on the Panthers.
Detroit Lions: Antonio Gibson, RB, Memphis
- Detroit gets a gadget player for here for depth. Antonio Gibson can play running back or wide receiver. Here, Detroit gets him as a running back for depth behind Kerryon Johnson who is talented, but injury prone. Gibson seems like a better pass catcher than Johnson too so he compliments him well this late in the draft.
New York Giants: Jacob Breeland, TE, Oregon
- The 6-5 252 lb Jacob Breeland was once a top 5 tight end in this class. He did not get a Senior Bowl invite, but he does have the upside to be a starting tight end.
- Rhett Ellison retired. Evan Engram is a great tight end when healthy, but there is no quality backup behind Engram. This was problematic when Engram and Rhett Ellison were both injured in 2019. New York gets a huge steal here since Breeland can catch, run routes, and block effectively.
Los Angeles Chargers: Netane Muti, LG, Fresno State
- The 6-3 315 lb Netane Muti may end up being a steal here. He dominated the 2020 NFL Combine with 44 reps on the bench press and has massive hands. His pass blocking strength and pass blocking footwork along with his pass blocking is phenomenal when he is healthy. He had two consecutive season ending injuries in 2018 and 2019 despite being healthy at the NFL Combine which is why he dropped this far.
- Los Angeles Chargers starting left guard Dan Feeney enters a contract year. Also, the Chargers have no backup left guard for depth if Feeney goes down. Muti is good enough to come in and take the starting spot from Feeney if he stays healthy, but that's a huge if since Muti could very well be a newer version of Forrest Lamp with his durability concerns.
Carolina Panthers: Markus Bailey, 3-4 MLB, Purdue
- Carolina gets a 3-4 middle linebacker with Luke Kuechly retiring by choice. The 6-0 235 lb Markus Bailey had 82 solo tackles, 33 assisted tackles, 115 total tackles, 9.5 tackles for a loss, and led Purdue with 5.5 sacks in 2018. Bailey got injured in 2019 and missed most of the 2019 season. He did the bench press at the combine, but did not opt to run in any drills or workout. He was medically cleared a few weeks ago so at this point, Carolina can take a flyer on Markus Bailey and hope this pick pans out.
Miami Dolphins: K'Von Wallace, FS, Clemson
- Miami has one decent safety in Eric Rowe. Rowe is talented, but he's a downgrade compared to Minkah Fitzpatrick or Reshad Jones as Fitzpatrick got traded and Jones got placed on injured reserve before getting cut.
- Miami has back-to-back picks and both of Clemson's starting safeties are on the board, so I'm gonna go ahead and mock both safeties to Miami. K'Von Wallace has better tape than Tanner Muse which is why I am mocking him here at 153.
Miami Dolphins: Tanner Muse, SS, Clemson
- Tanner Muse is faster than K'Von Wallace. Muse struggles with blocking though while Wallace has a tendency to take bad angles. The two Clemson teammates who started next to each other when Isaiah Simmons lined up as a linebacker or a third safety will now compete against each other for one of the starting safety spots next to Eric Rowe with the other safety being a nice backup for depth.
Minnesota Vikings: Bryan Edwards, WR, South Carolina
- Minnesota got the replacement to Stefon Diggs in the first round of this mock draft. Now they get Laquon Treadwell's replacement here in the fifth round by taking South Carolina wide receiver Bryan Edwards.
- The 6-3 212 lb Bryan Edwards has great game speed on film despite not running a 40 time. He did not stand out in Mobile, but he is one of the better blockers in this draft class when you watch his tape.
- Minnesota drafted a receiver out of South Carolina named Sidney Rice back in 2007. They take Edwards here hoping for a Gamecock to provide a similar impact that Rice did.
San Francisco 49ers: Kindle Vildor, CB, Georgia Southern
- San Francisco gets a cornerback that can play across from Richard Sherman since Ahkello Witherspoon got benched down the stretch. The 5-10 185 lb Kindle Vildor is the best cornerback on the board. His 4.44 40-time was good too. Vildor did not make a strong impression in Mobile in my honest opinion, but he also struggled on tape against LSU and Minnesota who both had good wide receivers after getting 11 deflections from pass breakups and intercepting a pass intended for Tee Higgins in 2018. Vildor's best game in 2019 was against Liberty where he faced wide receiver Antonio Gandy-Golden getting 2 deflections from pass breakups along with an interception.
Jacksonville Jaguars: Cale Garrett, LOLB, Missouri
- Missouri middle linebacker Cale Garrett is versatile enough to play 4-3 middle linebacker, 4-3 left outside linebacker, or 3-4 middle linebacker. Jacksonville has Myles Jack moving to 4-3 right outside linebacker where Telvin Smith played prior to retiring after former Cleveland Browns middle linebacker Joe Schobert signed with Jacksonville.
- The 6-2 234 lb Cale Garrett had 65 solo tackles, 40 assisted tackles, and 105 total tackles in 2017. Cale Garrett had 69 solo tackles, 43 assisted tackles, and 112 total tackles in 2018.
- He only played 5 games in 2019 before a season ending injury getting 29 solo tackles, 13 assisted tackles, and 43 total tackles in those five games. Garrett could be a steal if he returns to his 2018 form while playing in the SAM role. At the same time, he could also end up being injury prone if he fails to recover from this injury.
New York Jets: Lynn Bowden Jr., WR, Kentucky
- New York gets a third receiver in the slot for Sam Darnold. After taking CeeDee Lamb and James Proche as the top two receivers for this team, they take Kentucky's wildcat speedster QB/WR Lynn Bowen Jr. as a slot receiver here. Connor Rodgers an avid New York Jets fan and co-host of the Stick To Football podcast is high on Lynn Bowden Jr.
Las Vegas Raiders: Shyheim Carter, SS, Alabama
- Shyheim Carter can play safety or cornerback with his versatility. The Raiders draft Carter for depth at safety here.
Indianapolis Colts: Marlon Davidson, LE, Auburn
- Indianpolis drafts the 6-3 297 lb Marlon Davidson here after he had 29 solo tackles, 19 assisted tackles, 48 total tackles, 12.5 tackles for a loss, 7.5 sacks, and 5 quarterback hurries in 2019. Marlon Davidson lined up at both 4-3 defensive end spots at Auburn. The ironic thing about Davidson is he has the body of a 3-4 defensive end or a 4-3 defensive tackle.
- The Colts get depth at 4-3 left end now that Jabaal Sheard is no longer with the team. Kemoko Turay is the current starting 4-3 left end now that Sheard is gone. Regardless of where you line Davidson up in the NFL he will give the Colts some much needed depth on their defensive line.
- Heading into 2019, many experts called Davidson, Auburn's best prospect not named Derrick Brown on Auburn's defense. He was a first to second round pick at one point so he's a fantastic value pick for the Colts and some people still have a day 2 grade on Davidson.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Benito Jones, NT, Ole Miss
- I spoke with a Wayne County Newspaper columnist in Mobile. They told me about a former Wayne County High School nose tackle named Benito Jones. Vita Vea is the only nose tackle on this roster and there is no backup to step in if Vea goes down. The 6-1 321 lb Benito Jones would make a great pick for depth this late in the fifth round.
Washington Redskins: Gabriel Davis, WR, Central Florida
- The 6-2 216 lb Gabriel Davis has great game speed on tape despite his 4.52 40-time at the 2020 NFL Combine. He got by Pittsburgh cornerback Dane Jackosn on a play where Jackson took the wrong angle in coverage. Davis struggled against Jackson on other plays, but Washington needs another receiver for Dwayne Haskins.
- Gabriel Davis had 72 receptions, 1,241 receiving yards, and 12 receiving touchdowns in 2019. Davis also had 4 consecutive 100 yard games against Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Connecticut, and East Carolina. That kind of consistency is why Mark Sciubba spoke highly of Davis. Mark had the most accurate NFL Mock Draft in 2019 with 16 correct picks.
Chicago Bears: Yasir Durant, LT, Missouri
- The 6-6 331 lb Yasir Durant was Drew Lock's blindside in 2018 before being Kelly Bryant's blindside in 2019 where his blocking improved by leaps and bounds without Lock. Durant may be a project, but he has enough upside to develop into a future starting left tackle. Honestly, this is the ideal offensive tackle to draft if you want a long-term backup that you can coach up into a replacement for Leno so he's ready to go the second Leno declines.
Dallas Cowboys: Josiah Deguara, TE, Cincinnati
- Dallas needs to replace Jason Witten. Blake Jarwin is not someone I see living up to his contract extension. Josiah Deguara went to Cincinnati which is where Travis Kelce played. He looks similar to Kelce as well. Jerry Jones may want his own version of Kelce so him and his son draft Deguara here in the fifth round hoping they get that.
Jacksonville Jaguars: Justin Herron, LT, Wake Forest
- Jacksonville gets depth at offensive tackle since both left tackle Cam Robinson and right tackle Jawaan Taylor both allowed 8 sacks. Robinson only allowed 4 sacks through the first twelve games and Taylor became the first Jaguar to start all 16 games since Maurice Williams in 2001. The 6-4 301 lb Justin Herron has the upside to develop into a future starter. Jacksonville would be getting him as a swing tackle while Robinson and Taylor continue to develop.
Detroit Lions: Austin Mack, WR, Ohio State
- Detroit has Kenny Golloday, Marvin Jones, and Danny Amendola back in the slot on a one-year extension. Time to get Detroit a receiver for depth since Golloday, Jones, and Amendola all enter contract years. Austin Mack had some big plays against Nebraska's top cornerback who I will mock in just a bit.
Buffalo Bills: Jared Pinkney, TE, Vanderbilt
- The 6-4 254 lb Jared Pinkney was one of my top tight ends heading into the 2020 Senior Bowl. His bad 2019 season after he did well in 2018, his average Senior Bowl week, and his mediocre NFL Combine are why he slips this far. He did even worse at the 2020 NFL Combine.
- Dawson Knox, the guy that I thought would suck, ended up surprising me by having one of the better seasons by a rookie tight end in the 2019 NFL Draft so why should the Bills take Pinkney. Pinkney would be a number two tight end complimenting Knox in Buffalo, which is a role Pinkney would do well in.
- Click this Jared Pinkney Interview to hear a press conference featuring Vanderbilt's tight end.
Philadelphia Eagles: Keith Ismael, C, San Diego State
- The 6-3 300 lb Keith Ismael is versatile enough to play left guard, center, or right guard with his versatility. He is my final interior offensive lineman with the upside to develop into a future starter. Philadelphia takes him and gets depth on their interior offensive line along with a successor to Jason Kelce.
New Orleans Saints: Darius Wade, QB, Bowling Green
- New Orleans gets a successor to Drew Brees and Taysom Hill here. Bowling Green quarterback Darius Wade reminds me of a former Saint named Aaron Brooks. It was Brooks who led the Saints to their first playoff win in NFL history when they defeated the defending Super Bowl Champion St. Louis Rams.
- Click this Darius Wade Interview to hear a press conference featuring Bowling Green's quarterback. Joseph Potter was so impressed with Wade that he took him as a backup to Baker Mayfield in the third round of our group mock at pick 97.
Baltimore Ravens: Lamar Jackson, CB, Nebraska
- Two Lamar Jackson's are better than one. Baltimore has Jimmy Smith, Marcus Peters, Marlon Humphrey, and Tavon Young back. They chose not to bring back Brandon Carr and Maurice Canaday, who recently signed as a depth corner with the Dallas Cowboys. One more quarter cornerback to develop for the future is needed.
- The 6-2 206 lb Nebraska Cornhuskers cornerback was the field cornerback lining up against number one receivers at Nebraska. He showed great man, zone, and press coverage against Ohio State. He lacks the game speed to keep up with receivers on a consistent basis, at least against Ohio State, struggles against the run, and has a tendency to miss tackles despite being an effective blitzer at times.
- Lamar Jackson had 30 solo tackles, 10 assisted tackles, 40 total tackles, 12 deflections from pass breakups, 3.5 tackles for a loss, and 3 interceptions in 2019. Jackson struggled to get a deflection in his final 4 games after getting 12 in Nebraska's first eight contests, looked very pedestrian during his Senior Bowl week in Mobile, and had a bad combine with a 4.58 40-time and only 10 reps on the bench press.
Houston Texans: Collin Johnson, WR, Texas
- Houston traded 57 for Brandin Cooks. Sure, Bill O'Brien has Brandin Cooks, Will Fuller, Randall Cobb, and Kenny Stills. The problem is none of these guys are big body targets with the upside to replace what DeAndre Hopkins brought to the team.
- Taking in-state Texas Longhorns receiver Collin Johnson is the best move for the Texans this late in the fifth round. I initially had Michael Pittman Jr. going to Houston at 57 before they traded that pick to the Rams for Brandin Cooks so now the Rams get the USC receiver who played in the same stadium as the Rams last season while the Texans get a local guy of their own at the wide receiver position.
- Collin Johnson had a spectacular junior season in 2018. He even picked apart DeAndre Baker in the Sugar Bowl win that Texas got against Georgia. He got 101 receiving yards agaisnt a TCU defense led by Jeff Gladney in 2019. His small hands 8 3/4 are a concern, but his size, route running, catching, and jumping make him a home run threat despite not having ideal speed for a big body receiver.
New England Patriots: Devin Duvernay, WR, Texas
- Devin Duvernay is a better route runner and can run more routes than Collin Johnson despite not having the size that Johnson has. The 5-10 202 lb Duvernay also ran a 4.39 40-time at the 2020 NFL Combine despite dropping some balls during wide receiver drills in Mobile.
- Devin Duvernay is the ideal receiver for New England to draft as a replacement to Phillip Dorsett. Even if Duvernay does not win a starting job right away, New England can groom him for a year as he learns behind Julian Edelman, Mohamed Sanu, and N'Keal Harry.
Miami Dolphins: Tony Jones Jr., RB, Notre Dame
- Miami has Jordan Howard, Kalen Ballage, and Myles Gaskin as the top three running backs on their depth chart at the moment. I am giving Miami a fourth running back to push these three running backs for a roster spot since Howard went from being the feature guy to playing a two-back system in Philadelphia.
- The 5-10 220 lb Tony Jones Jr. tore it up on the ground in a Notre Dame win against Virginia. I did Cole Kmet and Julian Okwara's film cuts of that game, but Tony Jones Jr. was the star of that game for the Fighting Irish. The only thing that may scare the Dolphins is his 4.68 40-time, but he can be productive like his predecessors in the backfield at Notre Dame.
Tennessee Titans: Hunter Bryant, TE, Washington
- Tennessee needs a replacement to Delanie Walker as the backup tight end behind Jonnu Smith. The 6-2 248 lb Hunter Bryant looked faster and had better game speed in 2018 than teammate Drew Sample, who the Bengals took in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
- Hunter Bryant had 52 receptions, 825 receiving yards, and 3 receiving touchdowns in 2019. Bryant's signature game came against Utah where he had 6 receptions, 105 receiving yards, and 2 receiving touchdowns against the best secondary in the PAC 12.
Green Bay Packers: Van Jefferson, WR, Florida
- Green Bay has DaVante Adams as the go-to-guy for Aaron Rodgers. Last year Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Allen Lazard split that role. Devin Funchess signed with the Packers to replace Allison after losing his number two receiver job with the Colts to rookie Parris Campbell.
- Funchess, Valdes-Scantling, and Lazard are all effective contributors. None are a sure-fire number two wide receiver target on any of the other thirty one NFL teams. Green Bay takes a flyer on Florida's best receiver Van Jefferson this late in the draft hoping he can beat out those three receivers, not stooges that Aaron Rodgers throws to for a wide receiver job.
San Francisco 49ers: Tyrie Cleveland, WR, Florida
- San Francisco has Henry Ruggs III, Deebo Samuel, and Dante Pettis as starters. They addressed all of their needs so now they go with the best player on the board and get another receiver for depth. With Jalen Hurd moving from wide receiver to tight end after moving from running back at Tennessee where he once started over Kamara to wide receiver at Baylor, now you need another receiver for depth besides Kendrick Bourne to compliment the starters. I am giving the 49ers Tyrie Cleveland late in the fifth round.
Kansas City Chiefs: Darius Anderson, RB, TCU
- The 5-10 195 lb Darius Anderson has the hands, vision, and speed to be a good running back in the NFL. His pass protection was his only issue on tape and in Mobile during Senior Bowl practices. I am putting no stock into his 40-time at this point since Anderson has enough skill on tape to beat out Darwin Thompson for the backup running back gig.
- When Damien Williams leaves for Free Agency in 2021, Darius Anderson and Darwin Thompson can split carries since Thompson was the number two running back behind Cam Akers at Florida State even though the Chiefs overdrafted Thompson. Anderson will split carries with Thompson or beat him out for a running back spot if the Chiefs focus on other team needs first and wait for a running back late in the draft like Anderson.
Denver Broncos: Prince Tega Wanogho, LT, Auburn
- Denver got this compensation pick at 178 thanks to Billy Turner signing with the Green Bay Packers.
- Denver drafts a backup to Garrett Bolles. The 6-5 307 lb Prince Tega Wanogho is being heavily overvalued in various NFL mock drafts as his tape against Alabama in 2019 is god awful despite Auburn's high scoring 45-42 win over Alabama as Anfernee Jennings is having his way with Auburn's blindside if you watch Auburn's offensive line against Alabama on Youtube, where as Driscoll is dominating Terrell Lewis at the line of scrimmage.
- Many have Auburn's left tackle going a lot higher than this based on his upside along with his superb run blocking and zone blocking. Even though the run blocking, run blocking strength, and run blocking footwork checks out to the point where you can argue Prince is a top 5 run blocker, he also happens to be a bottom five pass blocker in this draft which is why I have him sliding this far.
Dallas Cowboys: Cole McDonald, QB, Hawaii
- Dallas got this compensation pick at 179 thanks to Cole Beasley signing with the Buffalo Bills.
- Cooper Rush is the current backup to Dak Prescott. Troy Aikman had Jason Garrett as his backup. It's time to get a good backup for Kellen Moore to coach as offensive coordinator since he used to be Dak's backup. Cole McDonald is the top quarterback on my board, and honestly if Dallas drafts him here, it may give the Cowboys more leverage in their contract negotiations with Dak Prescott after Dallas opted to place the franchise tag on Prescott.
