2017 Fantasy Baseball First Base Rankings

Chris Ransom follow @DraftUtopia Last Updated: February 8, 2017.

  1. Paul Goldschmidt, 1B, Arizona Diamondbacks

Paul Goldschmidt hit .320 to end the year after batting .223 in the Diamondbacks first 40 games. Goldschmidt is someone who I project to have a .325 batting average, 30 home runs, and 25 stolen bases. He is worthy of a top 5 pick in Fantasy Baseball leagues.

  2. Miguel Cabrera, 1B, Detroit Tigers

The truth is 34-year-old Miguel Cabrera and 33-year-old Joey Votto are 2A and 2B among the first basemen. Cabrera's 38 home runs from 2016 best Votto's 29.

  3. Joey Votto, 1B, Cincinnati Reds

Joey Votto's .326 batting average bests Cabrera's .316. Some thing Joey Votto provides better value than Paul Goldschmidt, but all three first basemen are first round picks regardless of where you rank them.

  4. Anthony Rizzo, 1B, Chicago Cubs

Anthony Rizzo is the clear cut #4 first baseman after Goldschmidt, Cabrera, and Votto. While not stand outs like those 3 he improved his batting average from .278 to .292 in 2016 as well as his 31 home runs to 32 home runs in 2016. Rizzo seems like a guy who could end up batting around .300 just like the other first basemen ranked ahead of him plus Rizzo has a realistic shot at reaching 35 home runs.

  5. Freddie Freeman, 1B, Atlanta Braves

Freddie Freeman batted .302 and hit 34 home runs in 2016. Freeman could bat anywhere between .280 and .300 in 2017 and could hit up to 35 home runs. I have a third round grade on Freddie Freeman, but I can honestly see him going in the 18-25 range as a second to third round pick depending on whether you are in a 10 or 12 team league.

  6. Edwin Encarnacion, 1B, Cleveland Indians

Edwin Encarnacion has 81 home runs in his last two seasons with Toronto when they lost the last two ALCS games. Now he joins the 2016 AL Champion Cleveland Indians after leading the AL with 127 RBI's.

  7. Hanley Ramirez, 1B, Boston Red Sox

Hanley Ramirez is coming off a really strong 2016 with 30 home runs. Durability is still an issue with Ramirez.

  8. Wil Myers, 1B, San Diego Padres

Wil Myers took huge strides in 2016. Myers is on the brink of becoming an elite first baseman, but needs another strong 2017 that matches his 28 home runs, 94 RBI's 29 doubles, and 28 stolen bases from 2016.

  9. Chris Davis, 1B, Baltimore Orioles

Chris Davis is an awesome home run hitter. His batting average is so inconsistent though.

  10. Eric Hosmer, 1B, Kansas City Royals

Look for Eric Hosmer to get back to .280. He may even get up to .300. Hosmer is in a contract year so he could have 25 home runs and 100 RBI's once again.

  11. Brandon Belt, 1B, San Francisco Giants

Brandon Belt is one of the top batters when he's on his game. Belt was ninth in batting average fifteenth in runs, sixteenth in RBI's and nineteenth in home runs. Belt is not as good as Paul Goldschmidt, but he feels like a late round first baseman that may potentially blossom into a top 5 first baseman this season.

  12. Adrian Gonzalez, 1B, Los Angeles Dodgers

Adrian Gonzalez had better numbers than Brandon Belt. Belt is young and upcoming at 29 though while Gonzalez is 35 and on the decline. I'm expecting a .261 batting average along with 22 home runs.

  13. Albert Pujols, 1B, Los Angeles Angels Of Anaheim

Albert Pujols had 31 home runs and 119 RBI's. His batting average has declined over the years and I'm expecting a batting average of above .250 with Pujols.

  14. Carlos Santana, 1B, Cleveland Indians

Carlos Santana will be a top 15 first baseman. Santana improved from 2015 to 2016. The former catcher moved around to both designated hitter and first base last year. He won't provide and fielding if you are in a league where fielding percentages for infielders dictate fantasy points.

  15. Jose Abreu, 1B, Chicago White Sox

Jose Abreu is one of the best players on the Chicago White Sox. I also feel like Abreu is on the decline and could be someone that gets dealt at the 2017 MLB Trade Deadline.
