Green Bay Packers Free Agency Recap

Green Bay got two big Free Agents with Z'Darius Smith at 3-4 right outside linebacker and Preston Smith at 3-4 left outside linebacker. Green Bay also signed Adrian Amos at free safety and Billy Turner to be their starting right guard.

Green Bay Packers Draft Recap

The Packers got two first round picks that may be starters in Rashan Gary a 3-4 defensive end out of Michigan and Maryland safety Darnell Savage. Both rookies are fighting for starting jobs, and neither one is guaranteed to be a week 1 starter.

Green Bay Packers Quarterback Summary: Aaron Rodgers continues to play at a high level. Aaron Rodgers still did well with 25 passing touchdowns and 2 interceptions despite playing injured in 2018. DeShone Kizer enters his second season as a backup to Aaron Rodgers. Green Bay will continue to have continuity at quarterback for the next two years.

Head coach Matt LaFleur, offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, and quarterbacks coach Luke Getsy all specialize in developing quarterbacks. Aaron Rodgers should do better with these coaches now that Mike McCarthy is gone.

Green Bay Packers Running Back Summary: Green bay has Aaron Jones as their starting running back. Jamaal Williams is the backup running back. Tra Carson and Dexter Williams out of Notre Dame are battling for the third string running back job. Dan Vitale is the new starting fullback.

Running backs coach Ben Sirmans did an awesome job developing Todd Gurley as the Rams running back coach in 2015. Sirmans had similar success with Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams in both 2017 and 2018 with the Green Bay Packers.

Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver Summary: Green Bay has DaVante Adams as the flanker receiver. With Randall Cobb gone, there is a huge competition for that number two job. Geronimo Allison was the slot receiver last year and he is the front runner for that number two job. You also got receivers like Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Equanimeous St. Brown, and J'Mon Moore who the Packers all selected in the 2018 NFL Draft. Trevon Davis is another guy that could do something. Green Bay ignored receiver in the 2019 NFL Draft which is one thing that threw me off. Alvis Whitted was the wide receivers coach at Colorado State for the past seven years. Now he is making the jump to the NFL so if Rodgers struggles in 2019, it will be due to a lack of a number two target next to Adams along with horrible coaching by Whitted.

Green Bay Packers Tight End Summary: Green Bay has Jimmy Graham as the starting tight end along with Marcedes Lewis who is going from third string tight end to backup tight end. You also have Jace Sternberger as a third string tight end. Green Bay will probably use some two tight ends plus they have incredible depth at tight end. Justin Outten an offensive assistant with the Atlanta Falcons is the new tight ends coach with the Green Bay Packers.

Green Bay Packers Offensive Line Summary: Green Bay has David Bakhtiari starting at left tackle, Lane Taylor at left guard, Cory Linsley starting at center, Billy Turner at right guard, and Bryan Bulaga at right tackle. Green Bay lacked a right guard last season which is one reason why their offensive line sucked. That should not be an issue in 2019.

Adam Stenavich was the assistant offensive line coach with the San Francisco 49ers the last two seasons. Now he's the offensive line coach for the Green Bay Packers.

Green Bay can have a top 5 offense if they find a number two receiver. That is the key. In 2018, they had everything except a right guard. Now they have everything except a number two receiver to compliment DaVante Adams and tight end Jimmy Graham. I think this is a top 5 offense in points scored, total yards, passing yards, and a top 12 offense in rushing yards.

Green Bay Packers Defensive Line Summary: Green Bay has Montravius Adams at 3-4 right end, Mike Daniels at 3-4 left end, and Kenny Clark at 3-4 nose tackle. Rashan Gary out of Michigan is capable of starting, but projects as a backup. Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine specializes in developing defensive linemen. Jerry Montgomery is still the defensive line coach for the Green Bay Packers.

Green Bay Packers Linebacker Summary: The Green Bay Packers have two pass rushers in Z'Darius Smith at 3-4 right outside linebacker and Preston Smith at 3-4 left outside linebacker. Blake Martinez will start at one of of the 3-4 middle linebacker spots with Oren Burks holding down the other spot. Green Bay has a strong inside linebacker core when healthy. The two pass rushers named Smith both got $118-million combined and both players need to get double digit sacks for the first time in their careers if Green Bay expects to contend for anything.

Mike Smith is the outside linebackers coach. He will be the linebackers coach and coaching two Smith's that Green Bay signed in Free Agency. Kirk Olivadotti will coach the inside linebackers.

Green Bay Packers Defensive Backs Summary: Green Bay is making Jaire Alexander the field cornerback this season with Kevin King at boundary cornerback. Josh Jackson is going to begin at nickel cornerback. Ka'Dar Hollman is the dime cornerback after being a 2019 sixth round draft pick out of Toledo. Green Bay has a bunch of scrubs fighting for the quarter cornerback job.

Darnell Savage is pushing Josh Jones for the starting strong safety job with Morgan Burnett gone. Adrian Amos takes over for Ha-Ha Clinton Dix at free safety. Tramon Williams is moving from cornerback to a backup free safety role due to his age.

Jason Simmons is the new defensive backs coach. With one defensive backs coach instead of a cornerbacks and safeties coach, there should be an overall improvement on the secondary.

The Green Bay Packers sucked on defense last year due to injuries. I thought Green Bay would have an awesome defense in 2018. I was wrong about that, and I think this defense may be worse then last years unit. I think Green Bay can be a top 20 defense in sacks, points allowed, total yards allowed, run defense, and pass defense in 2019.

Green Bay Packers Special Teams Summary: Mason Crosby is one of the leagues best kickers. Crosby is one of the leagues most reliable kickers when it comes to extra points. J.K. Scott is the starting punter for the Green Bay Packers. Jamaal Williams is going to be the kick returner in 2019 and Tramon Williams is going to be the punt returner which I kind of question. Special Teams coordinator Ron Zook did awful in College Football. He has done much better just focusing on Special Teams in the NFL.

Green Bay Packers Worst Case Scenario: The Green Bay Packers go 7-9. Their new coaching staff and players struggle to adapt to the new regime.

Green Bay Packers Best Case Scenario: Green Bay goes 11-5. They win the NFC North Division, get a first round bye, and make it to the NFC Championship Game.

Green Bay Packers 2019 Projected Record (7-9): Green Bay has a lot of uncertainty. I am not sold on the pass rushers they brought in. This team does not have a number two receiver or a punt returner. We're not even sure if either rookie the Packers drafted in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft will start right away. While the secondary looks better this feels like a 7-9 team even with Aaron Rodgers at full health since I get the impression that Green Bay downgraded at more positions rather then upgrade.
