Green Bay Packers Free Agency Recap

Green Bay got one big Free Agent. That player was tight end Martellus Bennett who finally won his first championship with the New England Patriots as a #2 tight end. He showed he could be a #1 tight end under Tom Brady when filling in for an injured Rob Gronkowski. The Packers also got him a tight end to compliment him in Lance Kendricks who is a solid #2 tight end that will thrive under Aaron Rodgers after struggling as the #1 tight end on the Rams for many years. Getting Jahri Evans as a starting right guard was the other big Free Agency signing. Davon House, a former starter in Green Bay is set to be the teams field cornerback.

Green Bay Packers Draft Recap

The Packers traded out of the first round. They ignored their biggest need at guard and none of their rookies are projected to start this year.

Green Bay Packers Quarterback Summary: Aaron Rodgers continues to play at a high level. Many consider him to be the best overall quarterback in the NFC and he's still regarded as the NFL"s best quarterback outside of Tom Brady. Brett Hundley is a great backup and Green Bay has great coaches when it comes to developing quarterbacks.

Head coach Mike McCarthy and quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt specialize in developing quarterbacks. Tom Clements got demoted from offensive coordinator to assistant head coach in 2015 and then lost his right to call plays as well so his departure was inevitable. With McCarthy and Alex Van Pelt, Rodgers will continue to play at a high level. Good news for Green Bay fans is that Rodgers wants to finish his career as a Packer.

Green Bay Packers Running Back Summary: Ty Montgomery was a wide receiver at Stanford so the idea of him playing running back makes me cringe a little bit inside. Jamaal Williams a rookie out of BYU and Aaron Jones a rookie out of UTEP are the backup running backs. I don't trust anyone in the running game at the moment. Aaron Ripkowski remains the projected starter at fullback.

Running backs coach Ben Sirmans did an awesome job developing Todd Gurley as the Rams running back coach in 2015. He did alright with Ty Mongtomery last year making him look better than he actually is.

Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver Summary: Green Bay has Jordy Nelson as the flanker receiver with Randall Cobb complimenting him as a secondary receiver. Cobb showed he could be a flanker last year. Davante Adams should be an effective slot receiver. You also got Geronimo Allison as your #4 receiver with 2017 draft picks DeAngelo Yancey and Malachi Dupre improving from third string wide receivers to backup wide receivers on the depth chart with both rookies out of Purdue and LSU making progress at wide receiver.

Offensive coordinator Edgar Bennett is great at developing wide receivers. Luke Getsy did well in his first year as wide receivers coach.

Green Bay Packers Tight End Summary: Green Bay has Martellus Bennett as the starting tight end along with Lance Kendricks as their backup. You also have Beau Sandland as a third stringer nd Richard Rodgers as a fourth stringer. Green Bay will probably use some two tight ends plus they have incredible depth at tight end. Brian Angelichio returns as tight ends coach with way more to work with in his second season.

Green Bay Packers Offensive Line Summary: Green Bay has David Bakhtiari starting at left tackle, Cory Linsley starting at center, and Bryan Bulaga at right tackle. The guard spot with Lane Taylor and Jahri Evans is the weakness on this offensive line.

James Campen is Green Bay's offensive line coach. He's been with the Packers as their offensive line coach since 2007. Campen has one of the best pass blocking schemes when it comes to pass protection in the NFL.

Green Bay did worse than you expect them to on offense in 2015. The Packers ranked 4th in points per game, 6th in total yards per game, 5th in passing yards per game, and 22nd in rushing yards per game. Green Bay became a top 5 offense once again in 2016 due to the return of Jordy Nelson at wide receiver.

Green Bay Packers Defensive Line Summary: Green Bay has Dean Lowry at 3-4 right end, Mike Daniels at 3-4 left end, and Kenny Clark at 3-4 nose tackle. Clark should take up a lot of space as a 3 down nose tackle so it will be harder to run on Green Bay's run defense. Montravious Adams could be a good depth player, but he's dealing with injuries. Mike Trgovac will improve the Packers defensive line as he has another strong defensive line to work with once again.

Green Bay Packers Linebacker Summary: The Green Bay Packers have two pass rushers that can start at either 3-4 right outside linebacker or 3-4 left outside linebacker with Nick Perry and Clay Matthews. Jake Ryan will start at one of of the 3-4 middle linebacker spots with Blake Martinez holding down the other spot. Green Bay has a strong linebacker core when healthy. With Julius Peppers gone, the Packers now lack depth at both outside linebacker and inside linebacker for their 3-4 defense

Winston Moss is an associate head coach for Green Bay who got promoted to assistant head coach. He's also the linebackers coach for the Green Bay Packers. Moss takes pressure off of Dom Capers, their defensive coordinator who also specializes in developing linebackers.

Green Bay Packers Defensive Backs Summary: Green Bay is making Davon House the field cornerback this season with Quinten Rollins at boundary cornerback and Demetrious Randall moving to the nickel. Damarious Randall was a boundary cornerback last season. Ladarius Gunter is set to play the dime. Demetri Goodson is set to play quarter cornerback. Dontaello Brown is the #6 cornerback and a backup. Kevin King their first draft pick, who they took in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft, has struggled and went from being the dime cornerback entering training camp to the #7 cornerback on this roster.

Morgan Burnett returns at strong safety with Ha Ha Clinton-Dix at free safety. Green Bay drafted Josh Jones for depth to replace Micah Hyde. Jones has had the most success of any of the rookies in this class.

Defensive coordinator Dom Capers knows how to develop defensive backs as well as linebackers. Joe Whitt Jr. is back to coach the cornerbacks. Darren Perry is back to coach the safeties.

The Green Bay Packers were okay on defense. The Packers finished 7th in the NFL with 40 sacks, 25th in points allowed, 25th the NFL in total yards per game, 32nd in pass defense, and 10th in the NFL in run defense. Green bay went from 6th in pass defense in 2015 to 32nd in 2016. I don't trust Davon House as a #1 field cornerback either.

Green Bay Packers Special Teams Summary: Mason Crosby is one of the leagues best kickers. Crosby is one of the leagues most reliable kickers when it comes to extra points. Justin Vogel was an undrafteed Free Agent out of Miami FL, but he wa s a top 5 punter in this draft class and is the only projected rookie to start on Green Bay this year. Jeff Janis is expected to be a kick returner with Randall Cobb as the punt returner. Special Teams coordinator Ron Zook did awful in College Football. He has done much better just focusing on Special Teams in the NFL.

Green Bay Packers Worst Case Scenario: The Green Bay Packers go 8-8 and miss the NFL Playoffs. This leads to GM Ted Thompson bringing in a new coaching staff to work with Aaron Rodgers.

Green Bay Packers Best Case Scenario: Green Bay goes 12-4. They do well enough to get home field in the NFC allowing them to get to Super Bowl 52.

Green Bay Packers 2017 Projected Record (10-6): Green Bay had a much easier schedule last year and only won the NFC North by the thick of a hair after getting off to a bad start due to injuries. This year they have to play the NFC South and AFC North teams.

The last two seasons, the Packers were my preseason pick to win the NFC. This season, I'm not predicting that for Green Bay. I'm not even sure they will win a playoff game with this roster, but they should win the NFC North. They are more vulnerable this season than ever before.

I have the Packers winning this division at 10-6. The Minnesota Vikings went 7-9 finishing second in the NFC North, Detroit Lions went 5-11 finishing third in the NFC North, and the Chicago Bears went 2-14 finishing last in the NFC North.

We're not sure what seed Green Bay ends up with yet. All we know at this point is that Tampa Bay won the NFC South and got home field, the Falcons got the top wild card spot, and Green Bay won the NFC North division. Stay tuned for more NFC Season Previews as we unveil who we have winning the NFC.
