Chris Ransom grades the Miami Dolphins 2015 NFL Draft. Does Miami have a bright future after drafting Jameis Winston with the fourteenth pick in the 2015 NFL Draft?
14. DeVante Parker, WR, Louisivlle A Grade
Miami already had Greg Jennings and Kenny Stills. Another receiver was still needed. Parker looks like he will be Ryan Tannehill's #1 receiver as a rookie as long as he stays healthy. Expect Tannehill and Parker to be a good quarterback wide receiver tandem for years to come in Miami.
Amari Cooper and Kevin White were two can't miss wide receivers. The third guy in that mix was Parker. I thought there may have been a better fit for Parker, but you cannot criticize Miami for taking Parker over someone else.
Parker has good hands, route running, speed, and the ability to run crisp routes in the short, medium, or deep passing game. He had over 200 receiving yards against Florida State. Ryan Tannehill gets a guy that will help him get to the NFL Playoffs at some point down the road.
52. Jordan Phillips, DT, Oklahoma B- Grade
Jordan Phillips played 4-3 defensive tackle at Oklahoma, but he has the size of a 3-4 nose tackle and can play either scheme. Despite being 6-6 332 lbs, Jordan Phillips was listed as a 2 down player.
Right now Phillips is being listed as a backup to Earl Mitchell. I like the idea of Mitchell and Phillips splitting time at defensive tackle across from Ndamukong Suh. If Phillips was starting, this would be an A- instead of a B- grade.
114. Jamil Douglas, RG, Arizona State C+ Grade
Jamil Douglas can play anywhere on the offensive line. Right now, Douglas is listed as a third string right guard. This is excellent value for Douglas who should have gone a little higher.
Douglas has too much talent not to be a backup on this offensive line. If Douglass cannot earn a backup job this is a waste of a pick.
145. Bobby McCain, CB, Memphis B- Grade
Miami has Will Davis, Zack Bowman, Brice McCain, and Bobby McCain competing for a starting cornerback across from Brent Grimes. That's a very scary thought after Cortland Finnegan retired because frankly none of those guys can replace Finnegan. This pick gets a B- grade simply because Bobby has a shot to be that guy in Miami even though he's a nickel corner at best if you ask me.
149. Jay Ajayi, RB, Boise State A Grade
The 5-foot-11 and 225-pound running back has good size and excellent ball carrier vision. Right now Ajayi is listed as the #2 running back on this roster.
Ajay was one of the bigger steals in this draft. A knee injury was the only reason he fell this far after having 28 rushing touchdowns in 2014.
150. Cedric Thompson, FS, Minnesota D- Grade
Cedric Thompson is a third string free safety. Louis Delmas was in a contract year, but Miami could have made a better choice with this pick.
156. Tony Lippett, WR, Michigan State C+ Grade
Tony Lippett can play wide receiver or cornerback. That's why this is a nice pick to wrap up the Dolphins draft.
Iosefa lost 10 pounds and ran a 4.82 40 at his Pro Day. That's still not that impressive, and I'm still puzzled as to why Tampa Bay took him with their final selection. If Tampa Bay really wanted a running back/full back they should have gone with Tyler Varga out of Yale in round 7 who dominated the Senior Bowl before going undrafted.
I originally gave the Buccaneers an A grade. Now I want to give Tampa Bay an F grade for Iosefa, but realize that's too low of a grade. Tampa Bay gets an average of a C- grade for making a terrible selection with Joey Iosefa in the seventh round.
Miami Dolphins Team Grade: B- Grade
Miami gets a B- grade. Ryan Tannehill has two long term weapons on the offensive side of the ball with DeVante Parker and Jay Ajayi for years to come after signing a huge contract. It will be up to Tannehill to integrate Parker and Ajayi into the offense.
The rest of these picks received mixed reviews with two B- grades, two C+ grades, and a D- grade. Miami had no picks in the sixth or seventh round.
I'm sure Miami wishes they had more picks. When you consider that the Dolphins had only six picks with no picks in rounds 3, 6, or 7 they did pretty good. They were able to take one fifth round pick and turn it into a #2 running back who has a chance to become a future starting running back on the Miami Dolphins.
