New England Patriots Free Agency Recap

New England signed Stephon Gilmore in Free Agency even though they lost Logan Ryan. They also got Hightower back and traded for Brandin Cooks, Dwayne Allen, and Kony Ealy. New England picked up David Harris the split second the Jets decided to release him. This team is stacked.

New England Patriots Draft Recap

The New England Patriots got Derek Rivers, a first round pass rusher out of Youngstown State in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He's listed as a backup 4-3 right end and did well versus Cam Robinson in New England's preseason opener. He won't play this season due to a season ending injury though.

New England also doubled up at offensive tackle in the draft. They got Antonio Garcia out of Troy now known as Tony Garcia and Connor McDermott. Both offensive tackles are in third string roles though.

New England Patriots Quarterback Summary: Tom Brady is the Patriots starting quarterback. You also have Jimmy Garoppolo as a backup in a contract year and Jacoby Brisset as a third stringer. Garoppolo will probably be a highly sought after Free Agent in 2017. Josh McDaniels returns. He's the offensive coordinator and the quarterbacks coach.

New England Patriots Running Back Summary: The Patriots have James White as a starter in 1 RB sets. James White and Dion Lewis are both starters in 2 RB sets. You also got Rex Burkhead, Brandon Bolden, and Mike Gillislee as backups for depth.

Running backs coach Ivan Fears is one of the best running backs coaches in the NFL. He has a lot to work with having at lease four running backs that can run the football effectively.

New England Patriots Wide Receiver Summary: Julian Edelman and Brandin Cooks will be the starting receivers in a two wide receiver set with Edelman as the flanker and Cooks as the teams #2 receiver. Cooks will get some looks at the flanker too and New England will mix up both Edelman and Cooks in the flanker Chris Hogan is the favorite to win the slot receiver job. You also have Danny Amendola, Malcolm Mitchell, K.J. Maye, Matthew Slater, and Austin Carr. The Patriots are stacked with wide receivers.

Chad O'Shea was hired by the Patriots in 2009. Chad O'Shea has been an awesome wide receivers coach for the New England Patriots during his tenure in New England.

New England Patriots Tight End Summary: The New England Patriots use two tight end sets quite frequently. This year will be no different with the leagues best tight end Rob Gronkowski plus Dwayne Allen. Both tight ends are great. New England's tight ends coach left for Alabama, but I think the tight ends coach is the least important of all the positional coaches. Tampa Bay has eveyrone back except their tight ends coach as well.

New England Patriots Offensive Line Summary: Right now the Patriots have Nate Solder at left tackle, Joe Thuney at left guard, David Andrews at center, Shaq Mason at right guard, and Marcus Cannon at right tackle. New England LaAdrian Waddle and Cameron Flemming as backups for depth plus Tony Garcia and Connor McDermott the two rookie offensive tackles from the 2017 NFL Draft as third stringers so the offensive line is extremely deep at offensive tackle maybe deeper than its ever been.

The Patriots also have a lot of depth on the interior offensive line. Jamil Douglas and Ted Karras also provide depth on the interior offensive line.

Dante Scarnecchia enters year two as the Patriots offensive line coach in his second stint with the team. The Patriots thrived with Scarnecchia's pass blocking scheme and should thrive again in 2016.

New England dominated finishing in the top 5 in three of the four categories and finished top 12 in every offensive category even with Tom Brady's 4 game suspension last season.. The Patriots ranked 3rd in points per game, 6th in total yards per game, 4th in passing yards per game, and 12th in rushing yards per game. The Patriots will remain one of the leagues most explosive offenses in 2017.

New England Patriots Defensive Line Summary: Trey Flowers will start at 4-3 right end with Kony Ealy complimenting him at 4-3 left end. Rob Ninkovich retired and Derek Rivers is on injured reserve so the depth, New England once had at this position is now gone.

Malcolm Brown and Alan Branch will start at 4-3 defensive tackle once again. Lawrence Guy and Vincent Valentine provide great depth t 4-3 defensive tackle.

Brendan Daly is one of the better defensive line coaches in the NFL. He has experience coaching the Minnesota Vikings defensive line as well as the New England Patriots defensive line.

New England Patriots Linebacker Summary: David Harris will start at 4-3 right outside linebacker Dont'a Hightower will start at 4-3 middle linebacker. Shea McClellin will start at 4-3 left outside linebacker. Jonathan Freeny, Kyle Van Noy, and Elandon Roberts will be used as backups for depth. Roberts has the best chance of those backups to start as he is the backup 4-3 left outside linebacker to Shea McClellin. I don't see Harris or Hightower relinquishing their starting roles at all.

The Patriots have three coaches that specialize in developing linebackers. Head coach Bill Belichick, Defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, and linebackers coach Brian Flores. These three really know how to develop linebackers.

New England Patriots Defensive Backs Summary: The Patriots have Malcolm Butler as the field cornerback for the second year in a row while Stephon Gilmore, a field cornerback in Buffalo compliments him at the boundary. Essentially New England has two #1 cornerbacks starting. Patrick Chung is expected to start at strong safety. Devin McCourty will start at free safety.

The Patriots have incredible depth at cornerback. Eric Rowe is a good nickel cornerback. Justin Coleman is playing dime cornerback. Cyrus Jones their 2016 second round pick plays quarter cornerback. You also got Jonathan Jones and William Likely competing for roster spots.

New England has Duron Harmon as a backup free safety and Jordan Richards as a backup strong safety. New England's secondary was the best in the NFL last year and they are much deeper in this area this season.

The Patriots have one of the best safeties coaches in Steve Belichick the son of Bill Belichick. Their cornerback coach Steve Boyer is the defensive backs coach.

The Patriots finished 17th in sacks, 1st in points allowed, 8th the NFL in total yards allowed, 14th in pass defense, and 4th in the NFL in run defense. The Patriots have the perfect balance of offense and defense to remain a powerhouse team in the AFC as I expect them to allow fewer points than any NFL team once again while they improve to a top 5 team in total yards allowed and a top 10 team in pass defense.

New England Patriots Special Teams Summary: Stephen Gostkowski will start at kicker. Gostkowski is arguably one of the two best kickers in the NFL along with Justin Tucker of the Baltimore Ravens. Punter Ryan Allen will start for the Patriots. Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman are the teams top two receivers, but they are also the Patriots top two return specialists. We will see Amendola and Matt Slater on kick returns and we will see Edelman and Amendola on punt returns. Joe Judge is back at special teams coordinator as well.

New England Patriots Worst Case Scenario: The New England Patriots go 12-4. They fail to get home field as a result. This keeps them from repeating.

New England Patriots Best Case Scenario: New England goes 16-0. This is New England's best roster since the team that went 16-0 in the regular season before finishing the year 18-1. New England goes 19-0 and repeats.

New England Patriots 2017 Projected Record (15-1): I originally had the Patriots at 14-2 losing to Buffalo and Miami on the road. I now have them winning both of those games, but do not have the audacity to predict another 16-0 season. So they will lose to either Atlanta, Denver, Oakland in Mexico, or Pittsburgh. We'll give the Raiders a win over New England in Mexico since we have them getting the final wild card at 9-7.

New England defeats the Chiefs in the divisional round while the Steelers beat the Colts. Pittsburgh is the only team that I think can beat the Patriots in the Playoffs, and they struggle against New England as they are 0-3 versus Tom Brady in AFC Championship games.

This is New England's most complete team in years. It's hard not to see this team repeating. Unless Tom Brady gets injured and suffers a Madden Jinx then I think this is the team to beat. Gronkowski was on the Madden cover last year and he got jinxed with an injury, but New England went 11-0 in games Gronkowski didn't start so you can't really say the Patriots got Madden jinxed last year since they were world champs coming back from the biggest deficit in Super Bowl history.

This year I have New England finishing 18-1 once again. I have them going 15-1 in the regular season before repeating where they beat the Dallas Cowboys to win Super Bowl 52.
