Chris Ransom grades the Pittsburgh Steelers 2015 NFL Draft. Pittsburgh took 3 SEC players with their first three picks. How will those SEC players do in Pittsburgh?
22. Alvin Dupree, 3-4 LOLB, Kentucky C- Grade
Alvin Dupree can stuff the run and has good versatility, but that's it. There's nothing else this guy can do. Dupree is more of a left end than a right end, and he seems like more a 4-3 defensive end due to lousy zone coverage. Linebackers have to cover and Dupree cannot do that.
Right now Dupree is listed as a backup to Arthur Moats on the depth chart. I think if Pittsburgh took Shane Ray or Randy Gregory they would be starting. In the end, it came down to one thing. Character. Dupree had better character than both Ray or Gregory.
Both Ray and Gregory were sack artists unlike Dupree. If Pittsburgh wanted a character guy they could have gone with Byron Jones at cornerback as well.
Pittsburgh had interest in Dupree and attended Kentucky's Pro Day. I just question this pick because I believe Dupree is a future bust.
56. Senquez Golson, CB, Ole Miss C Grade
Senquez Golson has the versatility to play cornerback, strong safety, or free safety. He's undersized at 5-9 175 lbs, but he also recorded 10 interceptions in 2014. One of those interceptions came when covering the Steelers 2015 third round pick.
Right now Golson is listed as a nickel cornerback. I think Pittsburgh should have went with P.J. Williams or Alex Carter at this spot. Pittsburgh took a pedestrian cornerback and it could cost them.
87. Sammie Coates, WR, Auburn A+ Grade
Sammie Coates has made outstanding progress. Coates is currently listed ahead of Markus Wheaton on the depth chart as a slot receiver. Coates has preformed so well, that some believe he could surpass Martavious Bryant on the depth chart if Bryant gets off to a rough start.
Coates never had 1,000 receiving yards or 10 receiving touchdowns in any of his 3 seasons at Auburn. Coates did dominate at the Senior Bowl before following that up with an outstanding NFL Combine before dominating Auburn's Pro Day.
Some had Coates as a second round pick. I get that Pittsburgh had bigger needs, but Coates was too good to pass on at 87.
121. Doran Grant, CB, Ohio State C Grade
The good news is that Doran Grant has the versatility to play cornerback, strong safety, or free safety. The bad news is that he's a backup at best. Right now Grant is the dime cornerback on the Steelers depth chart.
160. Jesse James, TE, Penn State B+ Grade
I had the Steelers taking Jesse James as a third string tight end that would challenge Matt Spaeth for the backup job. That's exactly what James will do.
199. Leterrius Walton, NT, Central Michigan C Grade
Leterrius Walton is currently listed as a third string nose tackle on the Steelers' depth chart. That's why this pick got bumped down from a B to a C grade.
212. Anthony Chickillo, 3-4 ROLB, Miami FL C Grade
Right now Chickillo is listed as a third string 3-4 right outside linebacker on the Steelers' depth chart. I think he will remain in that role this season, but will get released if he's not promoted to a backup role or is not starting when James Harrison retires.
239. Gerod Holliman, FS, Louisville A+ Grade
This was without a doubt the Steelers' best draft pick. Holliman looks like an immediate starter for the Steelers at free safety.
Pittsburgh Steelers Team Grade: C Grade
Pittsburgh had 2 awesome picks in Coates and Holliman. James was a solid pick. At the end of the day, this draft will be one that could end Kevin Colbert's career as GM unless Dupree pans out because Coates and Holliman look like the only future starters from the 2015 Draft Class.
