Gwen Doughty grades the San Francisco 49ers 2016 NFL Draft. Does San Francisco have a bright future after drafting DeForest Buckner with the seventh pick and Joshua Garnett with the twenty eighth pick in the 2016 NFL Draft?
7. DeForest Buckner, 3-4 RE, Oregon A+ Grade
DeForest Buckner will start at 3-4 right end. Arik Armstead his former Oregon teammate will start across from him at 3-4 left end. With two Oregon defensive ends playing the 5-technique and Chip Kelly a former Oregon coach, leading this team at head coach, we should see a lot of pass rushing and blitzes off the edge which have Buckner and Armstead pressuring the opposing guards. That will make the 49ers a competitive team.
28. Joshua Garnett, LG, Stanford A Grade
Joshua Garnett is expected to start right away at left guard. With Garnett filling the role Mike Iupati provided while he was in San Francisco before going to the Arizona Cardinals, now the 49ers have a formidable left guard once again. They also brought in another run blocker in Zane Beadles to compliment Garnett at right guard. Something tells me Carlos Hyde will be due for a huge comeback season if he stays healthy in 2016 with these run blockers up front.
68. Will Redmond, CB, Mississippi State D Grade
Will Redmond is the quarter cornerback on the depth chart at the moment. While many would consider that a reach, the 49ers cornerback situation is so bad that you cannot give the 49ers an F grade for drafting a cornerback here.
133. Rashard Robinson, CB, LSU D Grade
Right now Rashard Robinson is the number six cornerback on this roster. Robinson is a backup at this point.
142. Ronald Blair, 3-4 LE, Appalachin State F Grade
Ronald Blair was a 4-3 only defensive end in College. He has to adjust to a 3-4 defensive end role and is listed as a fourth string 3-4 left end. Its not good position for him to be in as Blair's odds of cracking the roster are minimal at this point.
145. John Theus, LT, Georgia C Grade
John Theus is a great value pick at this spot. He's third on the depth chart behind starter Joe Staley and backup left tackle Colin Kelly who started for Ottawa in the CFL at left tackle. Kelly is only making 65,000, so if Theus cannot beat him out for the backup left tackle job he's not the successor to Joe Staley it's that simple.
174. Fahn Cooper, RT, Ole Miss C Grade
Fahn Cooper is listed as a third string right tackle. Right now Trent Brown is projected to start at right tackle with last years starter Erik Pears as a backup. Its not impossible for Fahn Cooper to find a way to beat out Brown and Pears for a starting spot, but he needs to probably jump one player to make the 49ers roster.
207. Jeff Driskel, QB, Louisiana Tech F Grade
Jeff Driskel began as a third string quarterback. He's already been demoted to fourth string as Thadeus Lewis jumped Driskel on the 49ers depth chart. It would not be surprising to see Driksel cut from the 49ers.
211. Kelvin Taylor, RB, Florida F Grade
Right now Kelvin Taylor is the #5 running back on the 49ers depth chart. Taylor getting cut is almost a formality at this point.
213. Aaron Burbridge, WR, Michigan State C Grade
Aaron Burbridge may make the roster despite being the #7 receiver on the depth chart. He's currently the third string returner on special teams as well behind Bruce Ellington and DeAndrew White on the depth chart.
209. Charles Iworah, CB, Western Kentucky F Grade
Prince Charles Iworah is unlikely to make the 49ers. He's currently ninth best cornerback on the 49ers depth chart at the moment.
San Francisco 49ers Team Grade: C Grade
San Francisco got two immediate starters in the first round. I feel like they failed to build off of that by failing to bring in any premium backups for depth. That's why the 49ers got an overall C grade.
John York, Trent Ballke, and Chip Kelly are absolutely clueless. These morons make the 3 Stooges look like honors students that got MBA's from Harvard Business School.
