Chris Ransom grades the Seattle Seahawks 2015 NFL Draft. Does Seattle have another Super Bowl appearance after a third year in a row without a first round pick?
63. Frank Clark, RE, Michigan F Grade
Seattle spent their first second round pick on a backup 4-3 right end. That's why this pick feels like a waste.
69. Tyler Lockett, WR, Kansas State A+ Grade
Tyler Lockett is projected to start at slot receiver. Russell Wilson has Doug Baldwin and Jermaine Kearse returning as his top two receivers. The additions of Jimmy Graham and Lockett as a slot receiver in the draft will give him the necessary time to make something happen.
130. Terry Poole, RG, San Diego State D+ Grade
Terry Poole was supposed to be groomed to be an offensive tackle. Seattle wanted to groom Poole to be Russell Okung's successor.
Poole has been a disappointment at offensive tackle during OTA's for Seattle. Poole moved inside to right guard which is why this pick got a D+ grade.
134. Mark Glowinski, LG, West Virginia A+ Grade
Right now the only guaranteed starter from this draft class is Mark Glowinski. Glowinski has done so well, that he's already taking first team reps at left guard. Seattle needed a center and a left guard to replace James Carpenter and Max Unger.
I had a hard time believing that Seattle would find a replacement for either position. Glowinski was a right guard only at West Virginia. That's why I'm amazed that he's making such a quick transition to left guard filling a huge void that Carpenter left.
I originally gave this a D+ grade. I moved this up to an A+ grade because Glowinski is doing well as a starting left guard, I'll probably move this pick down again because I'm not sure how Glowinski will fare when he's matched up with guys like Darnell Dockett and Michael Brockers. How will Glowinski fare against those players? That's what will ultimately determine his future in Seattle.
170. Tye Smith, CB, Towson B- Grade
Tye Smith is the #7 cornerback on the Seattle Seahawks depth chart, but he has the potential to blossom into a #2 cornerback across from Richard Sherman thus becoming the next member of the Legion of Boom.
You need to be patient with Smith. At the same time he has to show you that he's good enough to work his way up to the dime cornerback role on a Seahawks' depth chart that is extremely thin at cornerback after Sherman. You keep him in the dime corner his rookie year. Year two he moves up to a nickel cornerback role, and by year three if you are patient with this guy, he might succeed next to Richard Sherman.
What will Smith show us in Training Camp? That's what will ultimately determine his future on this roster.
209. Obum Gwachum, RE, Oregon State F Grade
Obum Gwachum is a third string right end. That's why this pick got an F grade.
214. Kristjan Sokoll, DT, Buffalo B- Grade
Kristjan Sokoll is a backup defensive tackle on the Seahawks' depth chart. Sokoll could start in a few years if you are patient with him.
248. Ryan Murphy, FS, Oregon State B Grade
We nearly interviewed Ryan Murphy on our podcast. Nearly doesn't count though. Murphy is an excellent zone coverage free safety. He will make an excellent backup to Earl Thomas which is why this got a solid B grade.
Seattle Seahawks Team Grade: B- Grade
There were a couple of amazing picks, a couple of picks with potential, a couple of picks that were terrible, but good enough to make the team, and a couple of picks that might get cut in Training Camp. Those are the couple of picks couples that Pete Caroll has to work with during training camp.
Seattle struck gold with their Big 12 players in Glowinski and Lockett after reaching for Frank Clark. The Seahawks got a couple of Oregon State Beavers in Gwacham and Murphy. Is either backup from Oregon State going to be on this final roster?
Seattle will remain a contender in the NFC once again. I still feel uncertain about picking them to win the NFC for a third year in a row. I think someone will dethrone them this year, but we will see how Pete Caroll responds in 2015 following a tough loss to the Patriots.
