Round 7
Chris Ransom follow @DraftUtopia Last Updated: October 24, 2020.
Detroit Red Wings: Kienan Draper, RW, Chilliwack Chiefs (BCHL)
A+ Grade
- Detroit uses their first pick of the seventh round to take Kris Draper's son. This will certainly be interesting to see if Draper can follow in his fathers footsteps and make the NHL. Worst case scenario, you end up with a top 6 forward on your AHL team with the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Chicago Blackhawks: Louis Crevier, D, Chicoutimi Sagueneens (QMJHL)
A+ Grade
- The 6-8 216 lb Louis Crevier is the biggest defender in this entire draft. Someone will draft him in the sixth or seventh round. Louis Crevier had 10 goals, 11 assists, 21 points, and a +18 +/- ratio in 2019-2020. He's the biggest defenseman to be drafted into the NHL since Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara got drafted with the New York Islanders third round pick back in 1996.
Toronto Maple Leafs: John Fusco, D, Dexter Southfield HS (MA)
A+ Grade
- The 5-11 190 lb John Fusco had 10 goals, 21 assists, and 31 points in 24 games as the team captain for Dexter Southfield High School. He's accepted a scholarship to Harvard, so Toronto uses this seventh round pick on a 19-year-old defenseman, who has the upside to crack a third line in the NHL assuming he transitions from High School to Harvard, to the Toronto Marlies, before earning a roster spot on the Maple Leafs.
Los Angeles Kings: Aatu Jamsen, RW, Lahti Pelicans (SM Liiga)
C Grade
- Matias Rajaniemi played against guys in the pros in Finland. Aatu Jamsen dominated in 2018-2019 on the Lahti Pelicans Under 18-Team. He's done well with the Under-20 Team in 2020-2021. He has not made the jump to Lahti's main team in Liiga yet, so the Kings are probably looking at an AHL prospect at this point.
Vancouver Canucks: Viktor Persson, D, Brynas IF (Elitserien)
B Grade
- Viktor Persson is a 6-2 192 lb defenseman. He had 5 goals, 13 assists, 18 points, and a -2 +/- ratio this season in the Elitserien. Persson is on the Brynas U-20 Team and would make the third NHL draft eligible defenseman that Brynas had in the past three seasons with Persson succeeding defensemen Adam Boqvist and Victor Soderstrom who both went in the top eleven with Boqvist going seventh overall to the Chicago Blackhawks in 2018 and Soderstrom going eleventh overall to the Arizona Coyotes in 2019.
- Viktor Persson was the best prospect on Brynas IF. Despite having an undrafted grade on him, I knew there was a good chance he would be picked thanks to the track record Brynas IF has with defenseman.
- The Kamloops Blazers picked Viktor Persson in the 2020 CHL Import Draft. Persson will go to the Utica Comets after finishing his development with the Blazers assuming Vancouver signs him.
Arizona Coyotes: Elliot Ekefjard, RW, Malmo Redhawks (Elitserien)
D Grade
- The 6-4 216 lb Elliott Ekefjard lacks expereince. Arizona traded up for him in the 2020 NHL Draft so he's obviously talented enough to avoid an F grade.
Buffalo Sabres: Albert Lyckasen, D, Linkopings HC (Elitserien)
F Grade
- Buffalo reached with their seventh round pick. This pick warrants an F grade.
St. Louis Blues: Noah Beck, D, Fargo Force (USHL)
A Grade
- The 6-3 192 lb Noah Beck had 4 goals, 23 assists, 27 points, and a +3 +/- ratio in 2019-2020. He was voted the teams rookie of the year on the Fargo Force.
- Noah Beck enrolled into Clarkson. He will play College Hockey at Clarkson whenever NCAA Hockey resumes due to Covid-19.
Toronto Maple Leafs: Wyatt Schingoethe, C, Waterloo Blackhawks (USHL)
A+ Grade
- Toronto selects the 5-11 190 lb Wyatt Schingoethe here. Wyatt Schingoethe did everything well both offensively and defensively in 2019-2020 when he had 17 goals, 21 assists, 38 points, and +17 +/- ratio. I've seen some mocks mock him ahead of Ryder Rolston who was my favorite player on the Waterloo Blackhawks this past season.
San Jose Sharks: Alex Young, C, Canmore Eagles (AJHL)
A+ Grade
- The 5-11 181 lb Alex Young dominated this season with 36 goals, 46 assists, and 82 points. Young also had 13 points in the AJHL playoffs and will enroll at Colgate. Alex Young is versatile enough to play left wing, center, or right wing. Alex Young has the passing, wrist shot power, wrist shot accuracy, slap shot power, slap shot accuracy, offensive awareness, defensive awareness, and hockey IQ to be a future NHL forward. San Jose gets a player that I mocked to Dallas in the late fifth round here in the seventh round.
New York Rangers: Hugo Ollas, G, Linkopings HC (Elitserien)
C Grade
- The 6-8 238 lb Hugo Ollas is the biggest goalie in this draft. He has not played against professionals in Sweden yet, only players his own age. New York needed to draft a goalie and they got one. Worst case scenario, Ollas is the starter on the Hartford Wolfpack in the AHL. Best case scenario, he ends up as the starting goalie for the New York Rangers.
Florida Panthers: Elliot Ekmark, C, Linkopings HC (Elitserien)
C Grade
- Florida got a guy who may end up being a fourth line center in the NHL at some point in the next five to seven years with this pick. He's probably an AHL player at best though.
Carolina Hurricanes: Alexander Pashin, RW, Salavat Yulaev Ufa (KHL)
A+ Grade
- The 5-7 154 lb Alexander Pashin is versatile enough to play left wing, center, or right wing with his versatility. His best fit is at right wing.
- Alexander Pashin has the skating, passing, playmaking, wrist shot power, wrist shot accuracy, slap shot power, and slap shot accuracy to be a first line right winger in the NHL. He is a liability as far as his defensive play goes. Has not played against the KHL against pros. He may only end up being an AHL guy in Carolina.
- If Pashin makes it to the NHL, he will end up being a forward on the back 6 since Carolina also drafted Seth Jarvis and Noel Gunler who were both first round picks on my board at right wing.
Edmonton Oilers: Jeremias Lindewall, RW, Modo Hockey (Elitserien)
C Grade
- He's versatile enough to play left wing or right wing. He could be a good AHL winger, but I don't see him making Edmonton.
San Jose Sharks: Adam Raska, LW, Rimouski Oceanic (QMJHL)
A+ Grade
- San Jose drafts Adam Raska, who I mocked at the end of the fifth round, so getting him midway through the seventh round is incredible value. The Rimouski Oceanic took Adam Raska with their first round pick in the 2019 CHL Import Draft. Raska played left wing on a separate line behind Alexis Lafreniere so he's gotten the opportunity to learn under a player who will most likely be the first overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft.
Nashville Predators: Gunnarwolfe Fontaine, LW, Chicago Steel (USHL)
- Gunnarwolfe Fontaine had 26 goals, 31 assists, 57 points, and a +26 +/- ratio in 2019-2020. He's going to Northeastern where he will play with the Northeastern Huskies, who won their third consecutive Beanpot in 2020. This is a solid seventh round pick by Nashville since Fontaine can develop with Northeastern after dominating in the USHL, then he can go to the Milwaukee Admirals, and eventually earn his way up to the Nashville Predators roster.
Detroit Red Wings: Chase Bradley, LW, Omaha Lancers (USHL)
C Grade
- Solid pick to wrap up the 2020 NHL Draft. Detroit got the top prospect on the Omaha Lancers with their final pick. The 6-0 181 lb Chase Bradley is versatile enough to play left wing, center, or right wing.
- I had an undrafted grade on Chase Bradley due to durability concerns. Bradley was the best prospect on the Omaha Lancers, and he's going to play with the Sioux City Musketeers in 2020-2021 before enrolling into Northeastern for up to four years starting in 2021-2022. Once he gets his degree, Detroit can put him on the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL and stash him for the future.
Arizona Coyotes: Ben McCartney, LW, Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL)
A+ Grade
- Ben McCartney was the line 1 left winger ahead of first round pick Ridly Greig on the Brandon Wheat Kings despite the fact that Greig was younger and the line 1 left winger on the Wheat Kings power play. Arizona got a gem with Ben McCartney with this selection.
Calgary Flames: Ilya Solovyov, D, Saginaw Spirit (OHL)
D Grade
- Calgary reached here. Outside of Connor Zary, it felt like Calgary reached with a lot of their prospects.
San Jose Sharks: Linus Oberg, C, Orebro HK (Elitserien)
C Grade
- Linus Oberg had 4 goals, 4 assists, and 8 points in 37 SHL games in Elitserien. He already has 5 goals in 9 games on Orebro HK's main roster. The downside is he one of the oldest prospects in the 2020 NHL Draft. He will develop quicker, but he may only give you a back six center in the NHL best case scenario because he's not as good as Filip Barklund.
Anaheim Ducks: Ethan Bowen, C, Chilliwack Chiefs (BCHL)
A+ Grade
- The 6-2 170 lb Ethan Bowen has a third round grade despite regressing going from 39 points to 31 points. He has another year of eligibility in the BCHL and can go the NCAA route.
Carolina Hurricanes: Ronan Seeley, D, Everett Silvertips (WHL)
A+ Grade
- The 5-11 176 lb Ronan Seeley is another defender on the Everett Silvetips. Ever since Ryan Murray went second overall back in 2012, Everett seems to get good defensemen in spades.
Nashville Predators: Chase McLane, C, Tri-City Storm (USHL)
F Grade
- Nashville reached big time here. They win the first F grade of the seventh round.
San Jose Sharks: Timofey Spitserov, RW, Muskegon Lumberjacks (USHL)
F Grade
- Tiomfey Sitserov was a reach. This pick warrants an F grade.
Washington Capitals: Oskar Magnusson, LW, Malmo Redhawks (Elitserien)
F Grade
- Washington reached once again. This now the third consecutive F grade of the late seventh round.
Florida Panthers: Devon Levi, G, Carleton Place Canadiens (CCHL)
A Grade
- Devon Levi had a 1.47 goals against average and a .941 save percentage in 37 starts. He's enrolled into Northeastern, and looks like an ideal backup to Spencer Knight, Florida's first round pick at goalie in the 2019 NHL Draft. Florida has two goalies of the future and will be a formidable team down the road once their prospects arrive in the NHL.
Toronto Maple Leafs: Ryan Tverberg, C, Toronto Jr. Canadiens (OJHL)
A Grade
- Toronto drafted this local for a reason here. Nice pick in the late seventh round.
New York Islanders: Henrik Tikkanen, G, Helsingfors IFK (SM Liiga)
F Grade
- The 6-8 201 lb goalie has yet to play in SM Liiga, the main league in Finland. He will be on a loan with another team depsite his undrafted grade which will set back his development.
Vegas Golden Knights: Maxim Marushev, C, Ak Bars Kazan (KHL)
F Grade
- Maxim Marushev is 21-years-old. He will be 22-years-old on New Years Day making him the oldest player picked in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.
Buffalo Sabres: Jakub Konecny, C, HC Sparta Praha (Extraliga)
F Grade
- Buffalo reached here. They get an F grade with this pick from the Dallas Stars.
Tampa Bay Lightning: Declan McDonnell, RW, Kitchener Rangers (OHL)
C Grade
- Tampa Bay got prospects at every position despite not having a first round pick. That puts the Tampa Bay Lightning in a position where they can contend on a year-to-year basis as long as they do that and keep all of their talent in place.
