2020 NHL Mock Draft: Final Mock 7 Rounds
Round 6
Chris Ransom follow @DraftUtopia Last Updated: October 6, 2020.
Detroit Red Wings: Veeti Miettinen, RW, St. Cloud State
- The 5-9 159 lb Veeti Miettinen had 42 goals, 31 assists, and 71 points over in Finland as an alternate captain. Detroit grabs a prospect who will begin his College Hockey career at St. Cloud State, who may go as high as the third round to start the sixth round.
Tampa Bay Lightning: Bryan Thomson, G, Lethbridge Hurricanes (WHL)
- Tampa Bay gets a guy who may develop into a good backup for Andrei Vasilevski since their 2012 first round pick is now a Stanley Cup Champion in 2020. Bryan Thomson had a 2.83 goals against average and an .898 save percentage in 30 games this season.
- This was Bryan Thomson's first year as a starting goalie in the WHL which is the only reason why I think Thomson may have some upside as a late round prospect if you keep developing him. After Thomson, the rest of the goalies in this draft are career backups with Thomson being the last guy with an outside shot to become a starter down the road.
Previous Pick: Ethan Cardwell, RW, Barrie Colts (OHL)
Ottawa Senators: Rory Kerins, C, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL)
- The 5-11 172 lb center had 30 goals, 29 assists, 59 points, and a +2 +/- ratio in 2019-2020. He gives Ottawa good third or fourth line center that they can develop for the future. Like the other sixth round prospects in this mock, I've seen him mocked as early as the third round so he could get picked way before this.
Los Angeles Kings: Ben King, RW, Red Deer Rebels (WHL)
- Ben King, no relation to Benjamin King of the Vice Kings in Saints Row is a player for the Los Angeles Kings to take here. Ben King had 20 goals, 26 assists, and 46 points. He's good offensively, but a huge project defensively.
Anaheim Ducks: Emil Heineman, LW, Leksands IF (Elitserien)
- The 6-1 185 lb Emil Heinaman is a left winger that led Leksands IF U20 SuperElit team in goals with 26. He passes effectively, displays wrist shot power, wrist shot accuracy, slap shot power, slap shot accuracy, and defends well on tape. He has 2 assists in the SHL in the Elitserien league and there are guys in Sweden that have SHL experience with 0 points in the SHL that are projected to get picked higher. He's definitely a steal for the Anaheim Ducks at this point in the sixth round.
New Jersey Devils: Brett Berard, LW, USNTDP (USHL)
- The 5-9 163 lb Brett Berard had 7 goals, 11 assists, 18 points, and a +12 +/- ratio in 13 games. He also committed to Providence, so the Devils don't have to worry about bringing him up. I've seen Berard mocked as early as the beginning of the fourth round.
Dallas Stars: James Hardie, LW, Mississauga Steelheads (OHL)
- James Hardie had 34 goals, 29 assists, and 63 points in 2019-2020. James Hardie is teammates with Dallas Stars 2019 first round pick Thomas Harley.
Minnesota Wild: Hugo Styf, D, Modo Hockey (Elitserien)
- Minnesota drafts Hugo Styf. William Wallinder is the number four defender on Modo Hockey who plays on the second line. Styf is the guy who anchors the third line and has limited minutes.
Winnipeg Jets: Lukas Svejkovsky, C, Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL)
- The 5-10 165 lb Lukas Svejkovsky is versatile enough to play left wing, center, or right wing. Lukas Svejkovsky had 18 goals, 20 assists, 38 points, and a +27 +/- ratio.
New York Rangers: Garin Bjorklund, G, Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL)
- The 6-2 170 lb Garin Bjorklund had a 2.91 goals against average and an .897 save percentage in 28 games with the Medicine Hat Tigers. Bjorklund only has one year of experience as a starting goalie so he's got a lot of work to do before he gets called up. The Rangers drafted Henrik Lundqvist in the sixth round, so they draft another goalie here.
Nashville Predators: Parker Ford, C, Providence
- Nashville gets the best player on the board. Parker Ford had a good freshman season at Providence. Ford can continue to develop at Providence for the next three years before signing with Nashville.
Colorado Avalanche: Christoffer Sedoff, D, Red Deer Rebels (WHL)
- Colorado gets a defender. Christoffer Sedoff is a guy that will go play hockey in Finland on a loan. He could return to Red Deer in 2021-2022 before going to the AHL.
Toronto Maple Leafs: Reid Valade, RW, Kitchener Rangers (WHL)
- Toronto gets a right winger. Reid Valade had 18 goals, 21 assists, 39 points, and a +13 +/- ratio in 2019-2020.
Edmonton Oilers: Patrick Guay, C, Sherbrooke Phoenix (QMJHL)
- Patrick Guay is a two-way forward with the versatility to play left wing, center, or right wing. The 5-9 179 lb center had 21 goals, 19 assists, and 40 points with the Sherbrooke Phoenix in 2019-2020.
Pittsburgh Penguins: Ilya Usov, C, Dinamo Minsk (KHL)
- Ilya Usov already won a WHL Championship on the Prince Albert Raiders. He's had some success in 2020-2021 on Dinamo Minsk and looks like a candidate that the Pittsburgh Penguins could get as a future back 6 center on the third or fourth line behind Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.
Montreal Canadiens: Jacob Dion, D, Drummondville Voltigeurs (QMJHL)
- The 5-9 186 lb Jacob Dion had 17 goals, 34 assists, 51 points, and a +6 +/- ratio. Jacob Dion was the quarterback on the power play at Drummondville, and he's a nice prospect for Montreal to add here in the middle of the sixth round.
Chicago Blackhawks: Colby Ambrosio, C, Tri-City Storm (USHL)
- The 5-9 170 lb Colby Ambrosio had 26 goals, 24 assists, 50 points, and a +2 +/- ratio in 2019-2020. Chicago can draft this center here in the sixth round since they may be getting the best player on the Tri-City Storm this late in the draft.
Arizona Coyotes: Isaak Philips, D, Sudbury Wolves (OHL)
- The Arizona Coyotes got a great value pick in the sixth round. The 6-3 194 lb Isaak Philips has a chance to be the first player from Jamacia to ever be drafted into the NHL. He was born in Barrie, Ontario, but lived in Jamaica before entering the Ontario Hockey League.
Calgary Flames: Amir Miftakhov, G, Ak Bars Kazan (KHL)
- The 6-0 165 lb Amir Miftakhov dominated in the VHL and MHL. He struggled in the KHL. The 20-year-old goalie is expected to start for Ak Bars Kazan in 2020-2021 where he will enter a contract year with his KHL team so whoever drafts this fifth round prospect will have a year to wait before they sign this 21-year-old goalie. He seems like a goalie with the ceiling to be a starter in the AHL. He's good enough to lead a team to a Calder Cup, but I don't think he's got the ceiling to be a starter or a backup goalie in the NHL. Despite his shortcomings, he's the best goalie on the board for Calgary at this point in the sixth round.
Vancouver Canucks: Artyom Galimov, LW, Ak Bars Kazan (KHL)
- Calgary took the best goalie on Ak Bars Kazan. Vancouver follows that up by drafting the best skater on Ak Bars Kazan.
Columbus Blue Jackets: Xavier Simoneau, C, Drummondville Voltigeurs (QMJHL)
- The 5-7 174 lb Xavier Simoneau dominated with 28 goals, 61 assists, and 89 points in 2019-2020. He would probably be a third round pick if he was 5-9 instead of 5-7.
Toronto Maple Leafs: Josh Lawrence, RW, Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL)
- The 5-8 179 lb Josh Lawrence is versatile enough to play left wing, center, or right wing. His best fit is at right wing though. Josh Lawrence had 19 goals, 23 assists, and 42 points in 2019-2020. He needs to improve defensively, if he wants to go from the Saint John Sea Dogs, to the Toronto Marlies, to the NHL.
Philadelphia Flyers: Alec Belanger, D, Ottawa 67's (OHL)
- The 6-0 183 lb Alec Belanger had 10 goals, 22 assists, 32 points, and a +22 +/- ratio. Philadelphia could someone with Belanger's skills in their system.
Toronto Maple Leafs: Louis Crevier, D, Chicoutimi Sagueneens (QMJHL)
- The 6-8 216 lb Louis Crevier is the biggest defender in this entire draft. Someone will draft him in the sixth or seventh round. Louis Crevier had 10 goals, 11 assists, 21 points, and a +18 +/- ratio in 2019-2020.
Washington Capitals: Nate Schweitzer, D, Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL)
- Nate Schweitzer had 4 games in the USHL despite being team captain of his High School team. Nate Schweitzer will play in the NCAA at Colorado College in 2020-2021.
Ottawa Senators: Lleyton Moore, D, Oshawa Generals (OHL)
- Ottawa gets another defender. Lleyton Moore had 6 goals, 22 assists, 28 points, and a +3 +/- ratio in 2019-2020.
Boston Bruins: Logan Barlage, C, Lethbridge Hurricanes (WHL)
- The 6-5 205 lb Logan Barlage stepped up with 20 goals, 38 assists, 58 points, and a +22 +/- ratio in 2019-2020. Barlage would make a good addition for the Boston Bruins this late in the sixth round.
New York Islanders: Tyrel Bauer, D, Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL)
- New York goes with a defender here. The 6-3 206 lb Tyrel Bauer now becomes the third member of the Seattle Thunderbirds blue line to be drafted.
Vegas Golden Knights: Mack Guzda, G, Owen Sound Attack (OHL)
- Vegas gets a goalie to develop. Mack Guzda was draft eligible in 2019, but did not get drafted. Guzda is a bargain this late in the sixth round for a team that has not drafted a goalie.
Dallas Stars: Gunnarwolfe Fontaine, LW, Chicago Steel (USHL)
- The 5-10 176 lb Gunnarwolfe Fontaine dominated this season with 26 goals, 31 assists, and 57 points. Gunnarwolfe Fontaine was a line 2 left winger on the Chicago Steel and he will develop more at Northeastern. He's already 20-years-old and that may scare some teams away, but he played on the best USHL team in 2019-2020 where he straight up dominated with the Steel.
Tampa Bay Lightning: Matias Rajaniemi, D, Lahti Pelicans (SM Liiga)
- Tampa Bay drafts Matias Rajaniemi to wrap up the sixth round. The 6-4 205 lb defender is already playing in the Liiga against pros that are older than him. He has 2 assists, but his defensive play needs to improve as right now, the big bodied defender looks more like an offensive defenseman rather than a two-way defenseman.
