2023 MLS Mock Draft: Final Mock 4 Rounds

Round 3

Chris Ransom follow @DraftUtopia Last Updated: December 9, 2022.

  1. St. Louis City SC: John Klein, M, Saint Louis

St. Louis City SC gets a backup right back for depth in most cases. This is an exception as St. Louis City SC goes with a central midfielder for depth with hometown player John Klein dropping to the third round.

The 5-7 140 lb John Klein was teammates with last years first round pick Simon Becher. John Klein had 7 goals, 15 assists, and 29 points in 2021 with Simon Becher when Becher had 14 goals, 10 assists, and 38 points. John Klein had 7 goals, 5 assists, and 19 points without Becher in 2022. John Klein still did well enough to get an invite to the 2022 MLS College Showcase.

Previous Pick: Dominic Briggs, M, Creighton

  2. D.C. United: Oliver Semmle, G, Marshall

D.C. United drafts a developmental goalie in the third round. Oliver Semmle was the biggest reason why Marshall won the 2020 College Cup. He got an invite to the 2022 MLS College Showcase.

The 6-3 190 lb Oliver Semmle had a 0.38 goals against average, 7 goals allowed, a .788 save percentage, 26 saves, and 11 shutouts in the Spring of 2021 when he led Marshall to the 2020 College Cup as a first year starter with a 12-1-2 record as a starter. Oliver Semmle had a 0.74 goals aainst average, 14 goals allowed, a .774 save percentage, 48 saves, and 6 shutouts in the Fall of 2021 with an 11-4-4 record. Oliver Semmle had a 1.12 goals against average, 20 goals allowed, a .706 save percentage, 48 saves, and 8 shutouts in 2022 while going 10-4-3. Oliver Semmle accepted his invite to the 2022 MLS College Showcase.

  3. Toronto F.C.: Luis Grassow, D, Kentucky

The 6-1 200 lb Luis Grassow is versatile enough to play the 4 at sweeper or the 5 at center back. Luis Grassow had 3 goals, 3 assists, 9 points, and 12 shutouts in 2021. Luis Grassow had 3 goals, 1 assist, 7 points, and helped Kentucky record 11 shutouts in 2022. Grassow complimented Robert Screen on Kentucky's backline. Toronto F.C. has five International slots, and doesn't have to use one of them unless Luis Grassow does well enough to earn a promotion from Toronto F.C. II in MLS Next to the MLS.

Previous Pick: Patrick Agyemang, F, Rhode Island

  4. San Jose Earthquakes: Brett Bebej, D, Indiana

CF Montreal gets a defensive midfielder in the third round. Indiana defensive midfielder Brett Bebej is a natural at the 6, but can also play the 3 at left back.

The 6-0 153 lb Brett Bebej has 3 goals, 1 assist, 7 points, and has played in 7 of Indiana's 8 shutouts in 2022. Brett Bebej could be a third round pick in the 2022 MLS Super Draft.

Previous Pick: Patrick Agyemang, F, Rhode Island

  5. Houston Dynamo F.C.: Gino Vivi, F, Central Florida

Houston Dynamo F.C. gets a left winger here in the third round. Gino Vivi the left winger on Central Florida is a great value pick for Houston Dynamo F.C. in the third round.

The 5-6 148 lb Gino Vivi had 7 goals, 6 assists, and 20 points as a junior in the Fall of 2021. Gino Vivi had 2 goals, 5 assists, and 9 points in 2022. Despite regressing as a senior, Gino Vivi is the final player in this mock draft that got an invite to the 2022 MLS College Showcase.

  6. Chicago Fire F.C.: Ben Stitz, M, Penn

Chicago Fire F.C. drafts a central midfielder in the third round. Ben Stitz has been one of the best players in the Ivy League this Fall.

The 6-2 180 lb Ben Stitz is the catalyst behind Penn's 2022 Ivy League Championship team. Ben Stitz had 2 goals, 8 assists, and 12 points in 2021. Ben Stitz had 10 goals, 7 assists, and 27 points in 2022.

Ben Stitz can play the 8 at central midfielder and the 10 at attacking midfielder. He's got ideal playmaking and size that should translate to either MLS Next or perhaps even MLS down the road.

  7. Nashville S.C.: Cam Maquat, D, Cornell

Nashville S.C. loses their backup right back Eric Miller. Cornell right back Cam Marquat is a good fit here.

The 5-11 165 lb Cam Maquat is a natural 2 at right back. Cam Maquat had 4 shutouts with Cornell in 2022.

Previous Pick: Cameron Briggs, D, Creighton

  8. New York City F.C.: Emeka Eneli, F, Cornell

New York City F.C. drafts a striker hoping to replace Valentin Castellenos. Cornell striker Emeka Eneli was the striker for Cornell the past four years.

The 5-9 155 lb Emeka Eneli had 7 goals, 7 assists, and 21 points in the Fall of 2021. Emeka Eneli had 4 goals, 7 assists, and 15 points in 2022.

  9. Chicago Fire F.C.: Jelldrik Dallmann, F, Lipscomb

Chicago Fire F.C. II is the MLS Next team of the Chicago Fire. Chicago can draft the top goal scoring striker and stash him here.

The 6-4 185 lb Jelldrik Dallmann had 14 goals at Niagara in 2021. Jelldrik Dallman had 11 goals at Lipscomb in 2022. Jelldrik Dallmann plays the 9 at striker.

Previous Pick: Stefan Sigurdarson, F, Boston College

  10. New England Revoultion: Milo Garvanian, D, North Carolina

New England gets the best player on the board for depth here. I've seen Milo Garvainian mocked in the first round, so New England can draft him and stash him on New England Revolution II in MLS Next.

The 6-1 160 lb Milo Garvanian had 4 goals, 4 assists, 12 points, and helped North Carolina record 8 shutouts in 2022 after losing goalie Alec Smir to the 2022 MLS Super Draft. Milo Garvanian is versatile enough to play the 3 at left back, the 4 at sweeper, the 5 at center back, and the 6 at defensive midfielder.

Previous Pick: Jelldrik Dallmann, F, Lipscomb

  11. Charlote FC: Brandon Knapp, M, St. John's

Charlotte FC drafts a defensive midfielder for depth here since Charlotte FC needs someone that can play the 6 for depth behind Brandt Bonico. Brandon Knapp is the lone player from the St. John's 2021 Men's Soccer Team that had 12 shutouts last year.

The 5-10 165 lb Brandon Knapp had 2 goals, 4 points, and 3 shutouts in 2022. St. John's lost center back Lucas Bartlett and goalie Luka Garvin to the 2022 MLS Super Draft while Matt Chandler left the program to go to Wisconsin in the transfer portal.

Previous Pick: Conor Kelly, M, North Carolina State

  12. Colorado Rapids: Nick Gutmann, M, Kentucky

Colorado gets a midfielder in the third round. The Colorado Rapids get their third International player in this draft. Colorado gets a right winger here.

The 5-8 145 lb Nick Gutmann is versatile enough to play the 2 at right back and the 7 at right winger. Nick Gutmann had 5 goals, 19 assists, and 29 points in 2022.

  13. Vancouver Whitecaps: Buster Sjoberg, D, Syracuse

The 6-5 195 lb Buster Sjoberg had 1 assist and helped Syracuse record 6 shutouts in 2021. Buster Sjoberg has helped Syracuse record 8 shutouts in 2022. He can play the 4 at sweeper or the 5 at center back. Buster Sjoberg can be a good center back for Vancouver Whitecaps II in MLS Next and will not require an International roster slot unless he gets promoted to Vancouver's MLS roster.

Previous Pick: Milo Yosef, F, Marshall

  14. Austin FC: Noah Gulden, D, Lipscomb

Austin FC drafts a defensive midfielder for depth here. Brandon Knapp is the lone player from the St. John's 2021 Men's Soccer Team that had 12 shutouts last year.

The 6-1 163 lb Noah Gulden was the A-Sun Defensive Player Of The Year in 2021. Noah Gulden helped Lipscomb get 1 goal, 10 assists, 12 points, and 9 shutouts while lining up at both the 4 at sweeper and the 5 at center back. Noah Gulden was the final player from the 2023 MLS Super Draft to be a Hermann Trophy Semifinalist.

Previous Pick: Brandon Knapp, M, St. John's

  15. Portland Timbers: Josh Luchini, F, Pittsburgh

The 6-0 190 lb Josh Luchini helped North Allegheny win a state title in soccer back in 2017 before playing for four years at Lehigh with his best season at Lehigh coming in 2019 where Luchini had 11 goals, 2 assists, and 24 points. Luchini played his graduate transfer season with the Pittsburgh Panthers. Josh Luchini has 3 goals, 4 assists, and 10 points in 2022.

Josh Luchini, the younger brother of Jamie Luchini can play multiple positions. He can play the 7 at right winger, the 8 at central midfielder, the 9 at striker, the 10 at attacking midfielder, and the 11 at left winger. You can plug him into any of those positions with his versatility and Josh Luchini will find a way to make things work.

  16. Real Salt Lake: David Bercedo, F, Quinnipiac

Real Salt Lake gets a winger for depth here. David Bercedo of Quinnipiac is versatile enough to play the 7 at right winger or the 9 at striker.

The 5-8 143 lb David Bercedo had 14 goals, 7 assists, and 35 points in 2022. David Bercedo could start out in MLS Next, but if he pans out Real Salt Lake will end up with an International stud in the third round just like last year when Real Salt Lake drafted Jasper Loeffelsend out of Pittsburgh.

Previous Pick: David Bercedo, F, Quinnipiac

  17. CF Montreal: Veljko Petkovic, F, Pittsburgh

CF Montreal has already lost three different midfielders. CF Montreal drafts a former Pittsburgh Panthers midfielder here whose currently on Minnesota United 2 in MLS Next.

The 5-10 164 lb Veljko Petkovic had 6 goals, 5 assists, and 17 assists in 2019. When scouting Pittsburgh soccer for the first time in person, I mainly went to a couple of games to scout Edward Kizza who had 15 goals in 2019. I actually met the athletic trainer for the Pittsburgh Panthers, and that trainer told me to keep an eye on Veljko Petkovic and his immense promise as a freshman.

Veljko Petkovic dominated his sophomore season with 9 goals, 8 assists, and 26 points when playing in both the Fall of 2020 and the Spring of 2021. Veljko Petkovic had 5 goals, 5 assists, and 15 points in the Fall of 2021 before he left the Pittsburgh soccer team after being injured.

Veljko Petkovic went out of state on a road trip when Pittsburgh was playing a soccer game and that led to his dismissal from the team. Once that happened, New York City F.C. opted not to give him a homegrown deal. Minnesota United 2 took a flyer on him in MLS Next and he had 1 assist and 5 interceptions in MLS Next in 2022.

Veljko Petkovic is worth a gamble in the third round. For a team that's depleted at midfielder as CF Montreal, they have to gamble on Petkovic in the third round unless CF Montreal manages to trade allocation money away to get a higher draft pick.

Previous Pick: Declan McGlynn, F, Seattle

  18. Chicago Fire F.C.: Billy Hency, M, Loyola

Chicago Fire F.C. get a hometown player in the third round. Billy Hency from Loyola Chicago is a great value pick here.

The 5-10 150 lb Billy Hency had 7 goals, 7 assists, and 21 points in 2022. Billy Hency can play the 6 at defensive midfielder, the 8 at central midfielder, and the 10 at attacking midfielder. Very versatile box-to-box midifelder that can play anywhere in the center of your midfield.

  19. Los Angles Galaxy: Rodrigo Almedia, F, Pittsburgh

Los Angeles drafts a winger for depth here. With two goalies under contract, the Los Angeles Galaxy get a winger for depth before using our final selection on a winger for depth.

The 5-10 165 lb Rodrigo Almedia had 3 assists and 3 points with Pittsburgh in 2022. Rodrigo Almedia is versatile enough to play the 7 at right winger, the 8 at central midfielder, the 9 at striker, the 10 at attacking midfielder, or the 11 at left winger.

Previous Pick: George Tasouris, G, Portland

  20. Nashville S.C.: Rory O'Driscoll, M, New Hampshire

Nashville S.C. gets a central midfielder here for depth. The 5-10 150 lb Rory O'Driscoll plays the 8 at central midfielder. Rory O'Driscoll won American East Midfielder Of The Year in The Spring of 2021. Rory O'Driscoll had 7 goals, 2 assists, and 16 points in 21 starts in the Fall of 2021. Rory O'Driscoll still had 6 goals, 2 assists, and 14 points in only 7 starts in 2022.

  21. New York Red Bulls: Noah Holmes, F, High Point

The New York Red Bulls draft a striker for depth since they don't have a 10 goal scorer. Noah Holmes was extremely versatile at Liberty before taking over at striker for High Point in 2022.

The 5-11 185 lb Noah Holmes has experience playing the 7 at right winger, the 9 at striker, the 10 at attacking midfielder, and the 11 at left winger during his time with Liberty before transferring to High Point. Noah Holmes had 11 goals and 22 points with High Point in 2022. Noah Holmes would be a great depth piece at left wing, right wing, striker, and attacking midfielder off the bench.

Previous Pick: Hunter George, F, Maryland

  22. FC Cincinnati: Hunter George, F, Maryland

FC Cincinnati gets a left winger for depth. Maryland left winger Hunter George makes a lot of sense here since he's someone that can play the 9 at striker and the 11 at left winger.

The 5-8 145 lb Hunter George started 20 games at forward for Maryland. Hunter George had 3 goals, 4 assists, and 10 points in 2022.

Previous Pick: Thomas DeVizio, D, Rutgers

  23. Los Angeles Galaxy: Hunter Morse, G, Western Michigan

Los Angeles grabs a third goalie for depth despite the fact that the Los Angeles Galaxy have two goalies under contract. There are some 2023 MLS Mock Drafts that have the Los Angeles Galaxy taking a goalie in the first round for the second year in a row. I'm asking myself if Dr. Fauci made this mock draft.

If a goalie with amazing value comes along near the end of the third round like Western Michigan goalie Hunter Morse, then the Los Angeles Galaxy should draft a goalie. Hunter Morse was a three year starter at Michigan State and his best season with the Spartans was his freshman season when he had 75 saves. When Michigan goalie Owen Finnerty transferred to Michigan State in 2022, Hunter Morse responded by transferring to Western Michigan.

The 6-3 199 lb Hunter Morse gained 16 lbs of muscle after transferring to Western Michigan. He's dominated as the 1 at goalie this year with a 16-3-2 record, a 0.47 goals against average, 76saves, an .884 save percentage, and 11 shutouts in 2022. One person on NCAA.com's College Soccer website picked him for their All First Team as the starting goalie. That should tell you that Hunter Morse is good enough to get drafted.

Previous Pick: Logan Brown, D, Dayton

  24. F.C. Dallas: Daniel Nimick, D, Western Michigan

F.C. Dallas gets a center back for depth in the third round. Daniel Nimick won MAC Player Of The Year in 2022 and F.C. Dallas will stash him on North Texas SC in MLS Next.

The 6-2 175 lb Daniel Nimick had 8 goals, 1 assist, 17 points, and 12 shutouts with Western Michigan at center back in 2022. He's versatile enough to play the 4 at sweeper or the 5 at center back. He's from England and will require an International roster slot to play in the MLS. However, if F.C. Dallas wants to just stash him on North Texas SC in MLS Next, then that won't cost the team an International roster slot.

Previous Pick: David Alino, F, Dartmouth

  25. CF Montreal: Dominic Briggs, M, Creighton

CF Montreal uses this last pick on either a right winger or a goalie after drafting a striker, center back, and defensive midfielder here. Creighton right winger Dominic Briggs is a natural 7 at right winger.

The 5-9 145 lb Dominic Briggs only had 4 assists in 2022. This is the best replacement that I could find for Allstair Johnston at this point in the third round.

Previous Pick: Brett Bebej, D, Indiana

  26. New York City F.C.: Lucas Gen, D, Princeton

New York City F.C. actually drafted a starting left winger when drafting Princeton midfielder Kevin O'Toole with their 2022 second round pick. New York City F.C. goes back to Princeton and drafts another Tiger in the third round of the 2023 MLS Super Draft.

The 6-1 170 lb Luca Gen was a first team All Ivy player in 2021. Lucas Gen started 10 games and had 3 assists, 3 points, and 2 shutouts against Dartmouth and Virginia Tech where Gen kept MLS draft prospects in check.

Previous Pick: Rodrigo Almedia, F, Pittsburgh

  27. Portland Timbers: Tyshawn Rose, D, Boston College

Porltand gambles on someone who can play the 3 at left back. Tyshawn Rose plays left back.

The 6-0 155 lb Tyshawn Rose led Boston College with 1,381 minutes played in 2021. Tyshawn Rose did so well as a junior that he got promoted to one of the two captains on Boston College along with Stefan Sigurdarson. Boston College only had 2 shutouts all season, but Boston College and North Carolina were scoreless in the first round of the ACC Tournament. Boston College's head coach benched one of their two best defenders in Tyshawn Rose when the Tar Heels scored the lone goal in that first round ACC Tournament game on Boston College.

Previous Pick: Rodrigo Almedia, F, Pittsburgh

  28. Philadelphia Union: Dylan Gaither, M, Mercer

Philadelphia goes with the best player on the board in round 3. Dylan Gaither is worth selecting here in the third round.

The 5-9 164 lb Dylan Gaither is versatile enough to play the 10 at attacking midfielde or the 11 at left winger for depth. Dylan Gaither had 14 goals, 5 assists, and 33 points in 2021. Dylan Gaither had 6 goals, 10 assists, and 22 points in 2022. Atlanta United F.C. did not sign him to a homegrown deal meaning that Philadelphia can draft him and add even more depth to their midfield with most of the draftable fullbacks off the board.

Previous Pick: Tyshawn Rose, D, Boston College

  29. LAFC: Jason Dubrovich, G, San Diego

LAFC grabs a developmental goalie for depth. Their starting goalie got a red card and injured in the 2022 MLS Cup. The backup played well enough to win the 2022 MLS Cup, but his contract is up and he may not be back.

The 6-2 200 lb Jason Dubrovich was a 2022 Co-WCC goalie of the year. Jason Dubrovich stepped up and helped San Diego win the WCC conference in 2022.

Jason Dubrovich had a 8-5-6 record, a 1.09 goals against average, 62 saves, a .747 save percentage, and 7 shutouts in 2022. San Diego had 0 losses in the West Coast Conference this year which is the biggest reason their team got an automatic bid to the 2022 College Cup. Jason Dubrovich did the most to carry San Diego to where they were at which is why this young man deserves an opportunity to develop into a backup goalie in the MLS or potentially play for a year in MLS Next before earning a promotion with the defending 2022 MLS Cup Champions.

Previous Pick: Gunther Rankenberg, G, Georgia State
