2024 MLB Mock Draft: Final Mock 2 Rounds
Round 2
Chris Ransom follow @DraftUtopia Last Updated: July 14, 2024.
Oakland Athletics: Braylon Doughty, P, Chaparral HS (CA)
- The Oakland Athletics use this pick to reload at pitcher with only one quality starter in their rotation. Braylon Doughty, a High School pitcher from Chaparral High School located in California is the best pitcher on the board to start the second round.
- The 6-1 205 lb Braylon Doughty had a 2.10 ERA as a true freshman at Chapparral High School in 2021. Braylon Doughty posted a 1.42 ERA and a 3-1 record as a sophomore in 2022. Braylon Doughty posted a 1.69 ERA and a 5-1 record as a junior in 2023. Braylon Doughty posted a best 1.11 ERA and a 4-3 record during his senior season at Chaparral High School in California in 2024.
- Braylon Doughty had a 97 mile per hour 4-seam fastball, a 96 mile per hour 2-seam fastball, a 81 mile per hour power curveball, a 79 mile per hour curveball, a 85 mile per hour power slider, and a 83 mile per hour slider. Braylon Doughty still needs to develop his changeup, but having two different fastballs, curveballs, and sliders is a big reason why some have Doughty going in the compensation portion of the first round. If Braylon Doughty makes it to the second round, I cannot see a local team like the Oakland Athletics passing on him.
Kansas City Royals: Jacob Cozart, C, North Carolina State
- The Kansas City Royals get a catcher to groom behind Salvador Perez. Jacob Cozart is a bargain in the second round of the 2024 MLB Draft.
- The 6-3 222 lb Jacob Cozart had a .240 batting average, 42 starts, 24 runs, 35 hits, 8 doubles, 0 triples, 4 home runs, 25 RBI's, a .377 slugging percentage, 17 walks, 5 hits by pitch, 25 strikeouts, a .337 on base percentage, 2 stolen bases his only career stolen bases at North Carolina State, and a .993 fielding percentage as a true freshman in 2022. Jacob Cozart had a .301 batting average, 48 starts, 39 runs, 59 hits, 14 doubles, 2 triples, 10 home runs, 42 RBI's, a .546 slugging percentage, 24 walks, 6 hits by pitch, 38 strikeouts, a .392 on base percentage, 0 stolen bases, and a .992 fielding percentage as a true sophomore in 2023. Jacob Cozart had 48 starts, a .301 batting average, 39 runs, 59 hits, 14 doubles, 2 triples, 10 home runs, 42 RBI's, a .546 slugging percentage, 24 walks, 6 hits by pitch, 38 strikeouts, a .392 on base percentage, 0 stolen bases, and a .992 fielding percentage as a true sophomore in 2023. Jacob Cozart had a .305 batting average, 60 starts, 60 runs, 68 hits, 7 doubles, 1 triple, 19 home runs, 54 RBI's, a .601 slugging percentage, 52 walks, 2 hits by pitch, 48 strikeouts, 0 stolen bases, and a .994 fielding percentage as a true junior in 2024.
- Jacob Cozart has the home run hitting ability, line drive ability, and defense you want from a catcher. His arm is considered average and his base running is considered below average which is why he won't get on base unless he hits home runs or line drives. He's an effective power hitter, but he's also one dimensional if he's not utilized as a power hitter.
Colorado Rockies: Wyatt Sanford, SS, Independence HS (TX)
- The Colorado Rockies draft the best player on the board. Wyatt Sanford is the consensus best player on the board here at this point in the second round.
- The 6-1 180 lb Wyatt Sanford had a .267 batting average at Independence High School in 2024. Wyatt Sanford is committed to Texas A&M, so there is an outside possibility Wyatt Sanford takes the NCAA route if he doesn't go in the first round.
Chicago White Sox: Ben Hess, P, Alabama
- The 6-5 250 lb Ben Hess went 4-0 with a 3.22 ERA in 7 starts pitching 36 1/3 innings in 2023. Ben Hess had 106 strikeouts, but his ERA went up to 5.50 in 2024. Ben Hess threw 63 pitches in all 7 starts, but only had 1 game with 10 strikeouts against Kentucky late in the 2023 season. Ben Hess had two games of 10 strikeouts against Indiana and LSU in 2024.
- Ben Hess has a 94 mile per hour 4 seam fastball that can go up to 99 miles per hour. His 85 mile per hour slider is an MLB ready pitch that compliments his 4-seam fastball quite well at the next level. He's also got a 84 mile per hour changeup, a 77 mile per hour curveball, and his slider has enough velocity to develop into a 88 mile per hour cutter fastball. I believe Ben Hess has the floor of a relief pitcher in the bullpen. As far as his ceiling goes, he's got the upside to be a number two starter on an MLB team according to Jonathan Mayo who does an amazing job with MLB's draft coverage on MLB Network. The big issue with Ben Hess is his durability as he suffered two season ending injuries heading into his draft year despite staying healthy in 2024.
Washington Nationals: Joey Oakie, P, Ankeny Centennial HS (IA)
- The Washington Nationals draft a pitcher. Joey Oakie is one the top High School pitchers in the 2024 MLB Draft.
- The 6-3 200 lb Joey Oakie went 7-3 with a 1.13 ERA giving up only 18 hits in 49.2 innings while striking out 91 batters. Joey Oakie was also the 2024 Gatorade High School Player Of The Year in the State of Iowa.
- Joey Oakie has a 93 mile per hour 2-seam fastball and 85 mile per hour slider are his two signature pitches. He's going to have to develop his 4-seam fastball, his curveball, and changeup. His 2-seam fastball can go up to 97 miles per hour if you pitch Joey Oakie out of the bullpen.
- Washington may get a future starter with Joey Oakie if he improves his variety of pitches and hits his ceiling. There's also a chance you get a bullpen arm.
Los Angeles Angels: Ryan Prager, P, Texas A&M
- The Los Angeles Angels draft a pitcher here. Ryan Prager was one of the three starting pitchers on the Texas A&M team that made the 2024 College World Series finals
- The 6-3 200 lb Ryan Prager went 9-1 with a 2.95 ERA and 124 strikeouts in 19 starts at Texas A&M in 2024. Ryan Prager has a 90 mile per hour fastball with a 81 mile per hour slider and 80 mile per hour changeup as his three plus pitches. His fastball can go up to 93 miles per hour out of the bullpen, but he's added zero velocity on his pitches since High School which is a big reason why MLB ranked him as low as 61 despite showcasing good production during his sophomore redshirt season in 2024.
New York Mets: Jared Thomas, 1B, Texas
- The New York Mets draft a first baseman that can take over for Pete Alonso if Alonso opts to test Free Agency after this season. Texas first baseman Jared Thomas is one of the top first baseman left in the 2024 MLB Draft.
- The 6-2 190 lb Jared Thomas redshirted in 2022. Jared Thomas had a .321 batting average, 60 starts, 54 runs, 69 hits, 15 doubles, 4 triples, 4 home runs, 29 RBI's, a .484 slugging percentage, 27 walks, 1 hit by a pitch, 38 strikeouts, a .398 on base percentage, 10 stolen bases, and a .994 fielding percentage as a freshman redshirt in 2023. Jared Thomas had a .349 batting average, 60 starts, 61 runs, 87 hits, 15 doubles, 4 triples, 16 home runs, 47 RBI's, a .635 slugging percentage, 31 walks, 8 hits by a pitch, 60 strikeouts, a .434 on base percentage, 18 stolen bases, and a .990 fielding percentage as a sophomore redshirt in 2024.
- Jared Thomas can hit home runs, line drives, grounders, and bunts. Jared Thomas is a first baseman with five tool ability that you may be able to draft in the second round.
Pittsburgh Pirates: Kavares Tears, RF, Tennessee
- The Pittsburgh Pirates will have a bunch of players in arbitration like Jack Sudwinski, Nick Gonzales, Henry Davis, Paul Skenes, Josh Jones, Luis L Ortiz, Colin Holderman, Carmen Mlodzinski, Dauri Moreta, and Max Krameck with some of those guys entering arbitrtation by 2026 and all of those guys entering arbitration level 1 by 2027. Joshua Palacios is a good right fielder who enters arbitration in 2026, but I don't realistically see Bob Nutting allowing Ben Cherrington to pay all of these guys by 2027 due to how cheap the Pittsburgh Pirates owner is. I think Nutting would let Cherrington pay ten of these eleven players I listed in arbitration at the very most. Joshua Palacios, Dauri Moreta, and Max Krameck are the bottom 3 if you take into account that Pittsburgh's first round draft picks will probably get to play through their arbitration clauses, so the Pirates can draft a right fielder to develop in the minors or take a bullpen arm. Catcher could be an option if Henry Davis is still in AAA by the end of 2025, but I'm not going to panic about the situation Henry Davis is in right now. It's too early for a bullpen arm even though that and shortstop depth could be options in rounds 3 and 4. Tennessee right fielder Kavares Tears is on the board, so the Pittsburgh Pirates draft another Tennessee Volunteer here as Tears can be a right fielder that replaces Palacios down the road.
- The 6-0 200 lb Kavares Tears redshirted in 2022. Kavares Tears had a .304 batting average, 14 starts, 12 runs, 17 hits, 6 doubles, 0 triples, 2 home runs, 11 RBI's, a .518 slugging percentage, 7 walks, 1 hit by a pitch, 18 strikeouts, a .379 on base percentage, 0 stolen bases, and a 1.000 fielding percentage as a freshman redshirt in 2023. Kavares Tears had a .324 batting average, 69 starts, 73 runs, 79 hits, 16 doubles, 1 triple, 20 home runs, 62 RBI's, a .643 slugging percentage, 45 walks, 1 hit by a pitch, 74 strikeouts, a .427 on base percentage, 4 stolen bases, and a 1.000 fielding percentage as a sophomore redshirt in 2024.
- Kavares Tears creates plus raw power with his bat speed and strength despite having a flat left swing. He can hit home runs and line drives. He's also the only player I've scouted so far to have a fielding percentage of 1.000 in back-to-back seasons. He's also got above average speed for a runner and above average arm strength when throwing the baseball from the outfield to the infield. I think Kavares Tears has a very good floor and very small learning curve as someone who would develop rather quickly in the minors despite being ranked 66th on MLB's Draft rankings.
Cleveland Indians: Mike Sirota, CF, Northeastern
- Cleveland drafts a prospect that was a preseason top 5 pick in the second round. Most of the preseason top 5 picks in the 2024 Draft cycle lived up to the hype, but one guy that dropped to the second round this year was Northeastern center fielder Mike Sirota. None of the preseason top five picks in the NFL, NHL, or NBA Drafts fell out of the first round entirely despite some guys dropping out of the top 5.
- Northeastern Huskies center fielder Mike Sirota had a chance to be the second Northeastern Huskies player to be drafted in the top 10 joining Carlos Pena and the fourth Northeastern player drafted in the first fourteen picks of a draft if you count Jamie Oleksiak from the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and Alan Jackson a pitcher drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1970 MLB Draft. Carlos Pena was drafted tenth overall in 1998, but Mike Sirota had a chance to get drafted even higher than Pena in the MLB Draft which seems insane. His draft year was much worse than his pre draft year which is why he fell as far as he did.
- The 6-3 188 lb Mike Sirota had a .326 batting average, 37 starts, 27 runs, 46 hits, 14 doubles, 0 triples, 4 home runs, 20 RBI's, a .511 slugging percentage, 17 walks, 4 hits by pitch, 29 strikeouts, a .411 on base percentage, 10 stolen bases, and a .987 fielding percentage as a freshman in 2022. Mike Sirota had a .344 batting average, 55 starts, 73 runs, 74 hits, 9 doubles, 4 triples, 18 home runs, 54 RBI's, a .674 slugging percentage, 44 walks, 7 hits by pitch, 48 strikeouts, a .470 on base percentage, 19 stolen bases, and a .986 fielding percentage as a sophomore in 2023. Mike Sirota had a .298 batting average, 58 runs, 57 hits, 16 doubles, 2 triples, 7 home runs, 37 RBI's, a .513 slugging percentage, 59 walks, 5 hits by pitch, 48 strikeouts, a .473 on base percentage, 19 stolen bases, and a .985 fielding percentage as a junior in 2024.
- Mike Sirota has the home run hitting ability, line drives, grounders, and bunts. He has plus bat speed as well as five tool ability despite a down year in 2024. Mike Sirota projects as a 20/20 guy in the MLB that can hit 20 home runs and get 20 stolen bases. He's got an above average arm and a glove that can catch anything that comes his way.
- Mike Sirota is the nephew of longtime MLB legend Whitey Ford. He's got the size of Byron Buxton and the batting stance and batting technique of Mike Trout making his player comparison in terms of his upside in the MLB a hybrid of Buxton and Trout who are considered by most to be the top two center fielders in the MLB. Mike Sirota entered the season as a dark horse to go number one overall, but fell all the way to the second round making him incredible value for Cleveland here. His floor is Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Jack Sudwinski and his ceiling is Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout.
Detroit Tigers: Ryan Johnson, P, Dallas Baptist
- Detroit gets a pitcher here to groom for the future. Ryan Johnson is a good addition here in the second round.
- The 6-6 215 lb Ryan Johnson a 2.21 ERA going 11-3 with 2 no decisions in 16 starts with 151 strikeouts as a junior in 2024. Ryan Johnson set the school record at Dallas Baptist for strikeouts in a season with 151, the Dallas Baptist record for wins by a pitcher with 29, and the record for career strikeouts at Dallas Baptist.
- Ryan Johnson has a 96 mile per hour 4-seam fastball, a 92 mile per hour 2-seam fastball, a 81 mile per hour slider which is his best pitch, a 88 mile per hour cutter fastball, a 78 mile per hour curveball, and a 85 mile per hour changeup. Ryan Johnson's fastball can go up to 100 miles per hour out of the bullpen.
Boston Red Sox: Boston Bateman, P, Camarillo HS (CA)
- The Boston Red Sox draft a pitcher name Boston. Boston Bateman, a High School pitcher on Camarillo High School becomes the Boston Red Sox 2024 second round pick on a team that needs starting pitchers.
- The 6-8 240 lb Boston Bateman posted a 1.40 ERA going 3-1 as a sophomore in 2022. Boston Bateman posted a 1.70 ERA going 2-1 as a junior in 2023. Boston Bateman went 11-1 with a 0.54 ERA while also posting a .341 batting average and 7 home runs as a senior at Camrillo High School in 2024.
- Boston has no quality starting pitchers in this rotation at the moment. Boston Bateman can bat and pitch, but he's a much better pitcher than he is a batter.
- Boston Bateman has a 97 mile per hour 4-seam fastball, a 92 mile per hour 2-seam fastball, a 80 mile per hour power curveball, and a 75 mile per hour curveball with both of his curveballs being plus pitches that are MLB ready. He's still got to develop his slider and changeup despite having the fastball and curveball that you want to see from an MLB pitcher.
Cincinnati Reds: Dante Nori, CF, Northville HS (MI)
- Cincinnati drafts a center fielder that they can slowly groom behind Stuart Fairchild. Dante Nori is the best player available at this point in the second round.
- Dante Nori is considered the best High School batter in the state of Michigan. Dante Nori's grandather Fred Nori recruited Kyle Schwarber to Indiana and his father Micah Nori is a long-time assistant coach with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
- The 5-11 185 lb Dante Nori posted a .469 batting average with 22 RBI's, 14 doubles, 7 triples, and 2 home runs in 2024. Dante Nori also only struck out 10 times in 115 at bats on the Northville High School Baseball team that won the 2024 Division 1 State Championship in the State of Michigan. Dante Nori was also the 2024 Mr. Baseball Award Winner in the State of Michigan this past year.
- Dante Nori ran a ridiculously fast 6.15 60 yard dash which is the fastest 60 yard dash that I've seen while also running a 1.42 10 yard split. Dante Nori has 86 mph exit velocity, he averages 71.74 miles per hour when running, has 63.19 mph bat speed average, and a 19.91 hand speed average.
San Diego Padres: Kevin Bazzell, C, Texas Tech
- The San Diego Padres go with a catcher here. Kevin Bazzell is the best catcher on the board at this point in the second round.
- The 6-1 205 lb Kevin Bazzell redshirted in 2022 because he transferred from Dallas Baptist to Texas Tech after not playing. Kevin Bazzell had a .384 batting average, 63 starts, 55 runs, 87 hits, 24 doubles, 1 triple, 10 home runs, 62 RBI's, a .572 slugging percentage, 45 walks, 6 hits by pitch, 32 strikeouts, a .452 on base percentage, 2 stolen bases, and a .934 fielding percentage as a freshman redshirt in 2023. Kevin Bazzell had a .306 batting average, 48 starts, 37 runs, 57 hits, 13 doubles, 6 home runs, 32 RBI's, a .473 slugging percentage, 22 walks, 4 steals, and a .988 fielding percentage as a sophomore redshirt in 2023.
- Kevin Bazzell is a power bat that only hits home runs and line drives. He's got a great glove and suprisngly a good arm for throwing outs. Kevin Bazzell can also play third baseman, first baseman, left fielder, or right fielder with his versatility even though catcher is his main position.
New York Yankees: Dasan Hill, P, Grapevine HS (TX)
- The 6-5 175 lb Dasan Hill went 10-0 with a 0.99 ERA in 2024. Dasan Hill has a 93 mile per hour 4-seam fastball, a 93 mile per hour 2-seam fastball, a 90 mile per hour sinker, a 88 mile per hour power slider, a 87 mile per hour slider, a 75 mile per hour curveball, a 80 mile per hour changeup that has low sink. Dasan Hill is a High School pitcher that the New York Yankees can stash and develop for the future.
Chicago Cubs: Griff O'Ferrall, SS, Virginia
- Dansby Swanson entered this week with a huge slump with 1 hit in 15 games. Swanson remains under contract with the Chicago Cubs until 2030, but that won't keep the Chicago Cubs from drafting his eventual replacement here as the Cubs still have Dansby Swanson for five more years even if this is a wasted season with Swanson batting .205 on the year right now in 2024.
- The 6-1 185 lb Griff O'Ferrall has had a batting average of above .300 in all three years at Virginia. He gets on base consistently while also having 17 steals as a freshman, 16 as a sophomore, and 17 as a junior. Outside of getting on base and stealing bases, he doesn't bring much to the table, but he could develop into a replacement for Swanson if the Cubs remain patient with him.
Seattle Mariners: Tyson Lewis, SS, Millard West HS (NE)
- Seattle drafts a shortstop to groom behind J.P. Crawford. Tyson Lewis is the top shortstop on the board.
- The 6-0 180 lb Tyson Lewis started 38 games, had a .496 batting average, 53 runs, 62 hits, 41 RBI's, 14 doubles, 7 triples, 8 home runs, a .912 slugging percentage, and a .579 on base percentage as a senior in 2024. If Cole Young converts to second base like many expect, then Tyson Lewis can play shortstop. If Young plays shortstop, than Tyson Lewis can move to another position in the infield.
Miami Marlins: Carter Johnson, SS, Oxford HS (AL)
- The 6-1 185 lb Carter Johnson batted .333 in his senior year at Oxford High School in Alabama. Miami drafts Carter Johnson, the best shortstop on the board to be their shortstop of the future.
Milwaukee Brewers: Bryce Meccage, P, The Pennington School HS (NJ)
- Milwaukee drafts a pitcher for the future. Bryce Meccage from The Pennington School, a High School in New Jersey is the top pitcher left on the board.
- The 6-4 190 lb Bryce Meccage went 3-2 with a 2.80 ERA as a freshman in 2021. Bryce Meccage went 2-3 with 1.62 ERA as a sophomore in 2022. Bryce Meccage went 7-0 with 66 strikeouts and a 0.24 ERA as a junior in 2023. Bryce Meccage went 3-1 with 47 strikeouts and a 0.84 ERA as a senior in 2024.
- Bryce Meccage has a 95 mile per hour fastball and 85 mile per hour slider as his two plus pitches. He needs to develop his curveball and changeup more by refining those two pitches.
Tampa Bay Rays: Luke Dickerson, SS, Morris Knolls HS (NJ)
- Tampa Bay drafts the best player on the board here. Luke Dickerson may be a project, but he could also be a replacement to Wander Franco.
- The 6-6 195 lb Luke Dickerson had a .375 batting average as a freshman in 2021. Luke Dickerson had a .410 batting average as a sophomore in 2022. Luke Dickerson had a .483 batting average as a junior in 2023. Luke Dickerson had a .467 batting average, 64 runs, 49 hits, 20 singles, 11 doubles, 0 triples, 18 home runs, 24 walks, and 27 stolen bases as a senior in 2024.
- Luke Dickerson has the bat to hit home runs, line drives, grounders, and bunts. He ran a 6.3 60 yard dash and is a plus runner. He's got good hands and a nice glove. If he can improve his arm strength in the minors he should be able to stay at shortstop.
Toronto Blue Jays: Dax Whitney, P, Blackfoot HS (ID)
- Toronto drafts another pitcher to stash and develop in their prospect pool. Dax Whitney is one of the more consistent High School pitchers to come out of the State of Idaho in years.
- Dax Whitney posted a batting average of above .400 in three of his four seasons even though he's better at pitching despite being a two sport athlete that played both baseball and basketball. Dax Whitney is a much better baseball athlete than a basketball athlete.
- The 6-5 195 lb Dax Whitney went 2-0 with a 2.83 ERA as a freshman in 2021. Dax Whitney improved his ERA to 2.46 despite going 4-2 as sophomore in 2022. Dax Whitney improved his ERA to 1.03 while going 5-1 as a junior in 2023. Dax Whitney went 10-0 with a 0.27 ERA as a senior in 2024.
- Dax Whitney has a 93 mile per hour fastball, a 73 mile per hour curveball, and a 83 mile per hour slider. He has some feel for a changeup as both his curveball and slider have 3/4 tilt on those pitches. The Oregon State committment has a chance to have a legitimate four-pitch mix as a starting pitcher if he can reach the MLB. Toronto can gamble on Dax Whitney here if the Blue Jays believe they can lure him away from Oregon State.
Minnesota Twins: Levi Sterling, P, Notre Dame HS (CA)
- The 6-5 200 lb Levi Sterling posted a 0.55 ERA going 1-1 a a junior in 2023. Levi Sterling posted a 2.62 ERA going 2-4 as a senior in 2024.
- Levi Sterling has a 92 mile per hour fastball, a 85 mile per hour slider, a 80 mile per hour curveball, and his changeup is an emerging pitch that needs to be refined. The good news with Levi Sterling is he has two MLB ready pitches with his fastball and curveball. His slider should be MLB ready in a year, so refinining his changeup is really all you have to do if you happen to be Levi Sterling's pitching coach in the minor leagues.
Baltimore Orioles: Chris Levonas, P, Christian Brothers Academy HS (NJ)
- The Baltimore Orioles add another pitcher to their farm system. Chris Lenovas is one of the top High School pitchers still on the board late in the second round of the 2024 MLB Draft.
- The 6-2 175 lb Chris Lenovas had a 0.98 ERA and 72 strikeouts as a junior in 2023. Chris Lenovas had a 0.44 ERA and 68 strikeouts as a senior in 2024.
- Chris Lenovas has a 96 mile per hour 4-seam fastball, a 96 mile per hour 2-seam fastball, a 82 mile per hour slider, a 75 mile per hour curveball with 3,000 rpm, and a 81 mile per hour changeup. He's got a four pitch arsenal, but he had inconsistency with his command until this Spring. He's a high energy high intensity pitcher that has the traits to develop into a future MLB starter.
Atlanta Braves: Gage Jump, P, LSU
- The 6-0 200 lb Gage Jump was the number one pitcher in the state of California before committing to UCLA. Gage Jump spent two seasons at UCLA going 1-1 as a freshman at 2022 with 16 1/3 innings pitched as a true freshman in 2022. Gage Jump missed his 2023 season. Gage Jump is transferring to LSU for the 2024 Season and could do better on LSU in 2024. Gage Jump went 6-2 ith a 3.47 ERA in 15 starts, with 1 complete game, 1 save, 83 innings pitched, 66 hits, 35 runs, 22 walks, and 101 strikeouts in 2024. Gage Jump is no Paul Skenes, but he was a serviceable Friday Night Starter for LSU after transferring from UCLA.
- Gage Jump's two ace pitches are a 92 mile per hour 4-seam fastball and a 71 mile per hour curveball heading into 2024. Gage Jump developed an 81 mile per hour slider and 80 mile per hour changeup this past season at LSU. With four plus pitches, there's a chance Gage Jump becomes the MLB prospect and first round pitcher he was hyped up to be in the big leagues if he develops in the minor leagues.
Philadelphia Phillies: Drew Beam, P, Tennessee
- The 6-4 208 lb Drew Beam became the Sunday Night starter on the Tennessee Volunteers behind Chase Dollander and Chase Burns as a true freshman in 2022. Drew Beam pitched a complete game shutout as a true freshman pitching all 9 innings holding the Vanderbilt Commodores to 2 hits while keeping Vanderbilt scoreless in a 5-0 road win where the Vanderbilt Commodores play baseball. Drew Beam also had his first 10 strikeout game against the Alabama Crimson Tide baseball team two weeks in Knoxville two weeks after his complete game shutout over Vanderbilt. Drew Beam was 8-0 as a true freshman following his complete game shutout versus Vanderbilt and his 10 strikeout game versus Alabama. Beam had no wins after that pitching 5 innings once the rest of the seasona after pitching five consecutive starts with 6 or more innings pitched as a true freshman in 2022.
- Drew Beam was the Sunday Night Starter behind Chase Dollander and Chase Burns once again in 2023. Drew Beam went 9-4 with a team best 3.63 ERA giving up fewer runs than both Dollander and Burns while Beam also pitched 84 1/3 innings and 88 strikeouts as a sophomore in 2023. Drew Beam enters his junior season as Tennessee's number one starter thanks to Chase Burns entering the transfer portal. Drew Beam went 9-2 in 19 starts with a 4.22 ERA. Drew Beam posted 2 complete games despite such a high ERA which means he can take you deep into ball games when he's not giving up runs.
- Drew Beam has a 95 mile per hour 4-seam fastball, a 93-mile per hour 2-seam fastball, a 86 mile per hour changeup, a 88 mile per hour sinker, a 81 mile per hour curveball, a 87 mile per hour slider, and a 89 mile per hour cutter fastball. Drew Beam has up to 7 different pitches that he can throw in the MLB once he finishes refining those pitches in the minor leagues. The weakness with Beam is he's not a 100 strikeout guy yet, but part of that is on Tennessse's manager for not using him enough in College. Drew Beam did get 99 strikeouts during his junior year when Tennessee won the 2024 College World Series, so there's a chance this isn't as big of an issue as I'm making it out to be.
- Drew Beam also had two elbow surgeries on his throwing arm in 2020 and 2021 during his final two years of High School, but he's stayed healthy at Tennessee despite having comparable injury history to Wahsington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. Drew Beam has potential to be the steal of the 2024 MLB Draft, but you need to get Beam's entire injury history from when Beam started playing baseball whether that's tee ball in preschool, to Little League in grade school, or maybe his first injury happened in junior high. There's no question that Beam is a day 1 pick if he's healthy once again in 2024. The team that drafts Drew Beam is gonna interview every single coach Beam had about his injury history as early as tee ball and if that organization is satisfied with Drew Beam's medicals along with his body of work, then that team can draft Beam.
Arizona Diamondbacks: Josh Hartle, P, Wake Forest
- Arizona drafts a pitcher to mold for the future. Josh Hartle entered the year as one of the contenders to challenge Hagen Smith, Chase Burns, and Trey Yesavage as the first pitcher to be drafted in the 2024 MLB Draft.
- The 6-5 200 lb Josh Hartle went 7-6 with a 5.30 ERA with 54 strikeouts in 69.2 innings pitched in 14 starts as a freshman in 2022. Josh Hartle pitched 102.1 innings going 11-2 with 140 strikeouts and a 2.81 ERA in 17 starts as a sophomore in 2023 starting out as the Sunday starter being the number three pitcher before being promoted to the number two starter on Saturday's behind Rhett Lowder down the stretch. Josh Hartle began the season as the Friday Night Starter, but as the season progressed Chase Burns supplanted him as Wake Forest's top pitcher while Josh Hartle posted a 5.79 ERA in 2024.
- Josh Hartle has a 90 mile per hour 4-seam fastball, a 92 mile per hour 2-seam fastball, a 94 mile per hour sinker, a 81 mile per hour slider, a 89 mile per hour cutter fastball, a 82 mile per hour changeup, a 77 mile per hour power curveball, and a 71 mile per hour curveball. Josh Hartle has 8 different pitches. He's got the most pitches I've seen from a starting pitcher in college since Kansas State's Friday Night starter Jordan Wicks had 11 different pitches despite falling to the Chicago Cubs at 21 in the 2021 MLB Draft.
Texas Rangers: Chase Mobley, P, Durant HS (FL)
- The Texas Rangers draft a pitcher to develop for the future in case their current prospects don't pan out. Chase Mobley is a good long-term pitcher for the Texas Rangers to gamble on in the second round.
- The 6-5 205 lb Chase Mobley went 4-3 and had a 3.59 ERA as a freshman in 2021. Chase Mobley went 5-2 with a 2.03 ERA in 2022. Chase Mobley went 3-5 with a 2.41 ERA as a junior in 2023. Chase Mobley went 4-1, had a 1.35 ERA, and 80 strikeouts as a senior in 2024.
- Chase Mobley has a 93 mile per hour fastball that can go up to 99 miles per hour out of the bullpen. That is his one signature pitch. He also has a curveball, slider, and changeup, but those three pitches need refinement in the minor leagues.
Tampa Bay Rays: Daniel Eagen, P, Presbyterian
- Tampa Bay drafts a pitcher with this compensation pick in the second round. Daniel Eagen the Friday Night Starter on Presbyterian did enough to sneak into the back end of the second round.
- The 6-4 200 lb Daniel Eagen went 6-2 at Presbyterian, had a 2.67 ERA, 122 strikeouts, and pitched 77.2 innings as a junior in 2024. Daniel Eagan has a 94 mile per hour 4-seam fastball, a 93 mile per hour 2-seam fastball, a 82 mile per hour power curveball, a 77 mile per hour curveball, a 85 mile per hour slider, and a 86 mile per hour changeup that's considered too firm.
- The 2024 Big South Pitcher Of The Year has the two fastballs and two curveballs that are MLB ready. His slider and changeup do need to be refined in the minor leagues.
Milwaukee Brewers: Cole Mathis, 1B, Charleston
- Milwaukee gets their first baseman of the future. Cole Mathis is a guy who could sneak into the second round.
- The 6-1 210 lb Cole Mathis played pitcher for two years and first baseman for three years at Charleston also known as the College Of Charleston. Cole Mathis focused on batting full time this past season after pitching his first two seasons at Charleston despite having an ERA of under 4.00 in both seasons.
- Cole Mathis had a .330 batting average, 55 starts, 200 at bats, 48 runs, 66 hits, 20 doubles, 1 triple, 9 home runs, 51 RBI's, a .575 slugging percentage, 41 walks, 1 hit by a pitch, 37 strikeouts, a .439 on base percentage, 8 stolen bases, a 3.45 ERA going 5-1, and a .987 fielding percentage as a sophomore in 2023. Cole Mathis had a .335 batting average, 52 starts, 200 at bats, 63 runs, 67 hits, 17 doulbes, 2 triples, 14 home runs, 57 RBI's, a .650 slugging percentage, 46 walks, 7 hits by pitch, 32 strikeouts, a .472 on base percentage, 14 stolen bases, and a .987 fielding percentage as a junior in 2024.
- Cole Mathis controls the strike zone well with solid power. Cole Mathis can hit home runs and line drivers. He's doesn't have enough speed to get on base consistently when it comes to getting grounders and bunts. He's got plus arm strength to play first baseman, but an elbow injury kept him from pitching in 2024 after pitching his first two years. Some MLB teams view Cole Mathis as a back end starter in a number four or number five spot in a starting rotaiton too. Cole Mathis has a third round grade, but I think his versatility pushes him up to the second round.
Chicago White Sox: Chris Cortez, P, Texas A&M
- Chicago got this compensation pick from the Seattle Mariners in the Gregory Santos trade that sent Santos to Seattle. Chicago drafts Texas A&M pitcher Chris Cortez who can be used as a starter or reliever out of the bullpen. Garrett Crochet was considered a reliever coming out of Tennessee before the Chicago White Sox molded the 2020 first round pick into a starting pitcher.
- The 6-1 205 lb Chris Cortez had 10-3 record with a 2.78 ERA as a junior in 2024. Chris Cortez has a 97 mile per hour fastball, 89 mile per hour slider, and a 88 mile per hour changeup.
- Chris Cortez began the year as a starter, but eventually moved to the bullpen. Chris Cortez has the versatility to play long reliever, middle reliever, set-up pitcher, and closer. He can play anywhere in the bullpen and is considered the top bullpen arm in the 2024 MLB Draft after having a 5 inning game out of the bullpen earlier this season against Oregon.
Minnesota Twins: Aiden May, P, Oregon State
- The 6-2 196 lb Aiden May finally became a starting pitcher in his draft year. Aiden May went 7-1 with a 3.05 ERA in 14 starts with 84 strikeouts as a junior in 2024.
- Aiden May has a 95 mile per hour fastball and an 82 mile per hour slider. His slider has 3,000 rpm on it and is considered a power slider. He also has a changeup, but doesn't use it much. Aiden May will need to develop a curveball and refine his changeup in the minor leagues if he wants to become an MLB starting pitcher.
Miami Marlins: Payton Tolle, P, TCU
- The 6-6 250 lb Payton Talle transferred from Wichita State to TCU. Payton Tolle went 7-4 with a 3.21 ERA in 14 starts with 1 complete game shutout on the road against an Oklahoma State team that has a first round batter in Carson Benge.
Cincinnati Reds: Peyton Stovall, 2B, Arkansas
- Arkansas second baseman Peyton Stovall is a player whose been on my radar for a while. Cincinnati drafts him as a replacement to Jonathan India here in the second round.
- The 5-11 200 lb Peyton Stovall had a .340 batting average, 48 starts, 200 at bats, 39 runs, 68 hits, 107 total bases, 12 doubles, 0 triples, 9 home runs, 38 RBI's, 20 walks, 6 hits by pitch, 41 strikeouts, 2 stolen bases, a .409 on base percentage, a .535 slugging percentage, and a .988 fielding percentage as a junior in 2024.
- Peyton Stovall has been on my radar for a while dating back to the 2022 College World Series since his freshman year before being a team captain on Arkansas during his sophomore season in 2023.
Detroit Tigers: Khal Stephen, P, Mississippi State
- Detroit gets a pitcher with thier compensation pick in the second round. Khal Stephen transferred from Purdue to Mississippi State in 2024.
- The 6-4 215 lb Khal Stephen went 8-3 in 16 starts with a 3.28 ERA recording 107 strikeouts in 96 innings pitched as a junior in 2024. Khal Stephen has a 93 mile per hour fastball, a 85 mile per hour changeup, a 84 mile per hour slider, and a 78 mile per hour curveball. He lacks a true plus pitch, but he has the floor of a number five starter and the ceiling of a number one starter as Mississippi State's Friday Night Starter to begin the year.
Oakland Athletics: Gage Ziel, P, Miami FL
- The Oakland Athletics draft a college pitcher. Gage Ziel is the best college pitcher left on the board.
- The 6-0 223 lb Gage Ziel went 5-3 with a 3.87 ERA in 15 starts with 2 complete games, 100 innings pitched, and 89 strikeouts in 2024. Gage Ziel has a 95 mile per hour 4-seam fastball, an 86 mile per hour cutter slider, and an 85 mile per hour slider. Gage Ziel has experience as both a starting pitcher and a reliever, but needs to develop his curveball while refining his changeup.
Los Angeles Angels: Caleb Bonemer, 3B, Okemos HS (MI)
- The Los Angeles Angels get a shortstop that will convert to third baseman since Anthony Rendon is playing on a lengthy contract. Caleb Bonemer could be an option at the end of the second round with this draft pick that the Los Angeles Angels got from the Los Angeles Dodgers for losing Shohei Ohtani.
- The 6-1 195 lb Caleb Bonemer is Michigan's best High School shortstop in a long time. The last time a High School shortstop from Michigan was drafted, Derek Jeter fell to the New York Yankees at six in 1992.
- Caleb Bonemer had a .541 batting average, 8 home runs, 35 RBI's, 15 stolen baes, and a 1.064 slugging percentage before winning 2023 Gatorade Baseball Player of the year in the State of Michigan in 2023. Caleb Bonemer batted .435 with 7 home runs, 32 runs, 17 stolen bases, and a .957 fielding percentage winning Gatorade High School Player Of The Year in the state of Michigan for the second year in a row. Caleb Bonemer has a 3.89 GPA and also helps youth baseball teams with coaching, advice, and community service during his free time. Caleb Bonemer hit a home run and dominated at the National Showcase game leading up the 2024 MLB Draft.
