Colorado put Calgary away early in game 5 of the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Team captain Gabriel Landeskog and 2015 first round pick Mikko Rantanen both scored early to make it a 2-0 game. Calgary scored in the first period thanks to T.J. Brodie. That was Calgary's only goal of the game.
Colorado led 2-1 after one period of play. Colin Smith scored two goals in the second period. Colorado led 4-1 after two periods of play.
Mikko Rantanen scored again in the third period after helping Colin Smith get an assist in the second period.
Colorado is the first team in the Western Conference to advance to the second round. This is also the first time in NHL history under the new playoff format where the lowest seeded wild card in each conference beat the top seed.
The Columbus Blue Jackets were the lowest seed in the Eastern Conference before they swept the top seeded TAmpa Bay Lightning. Now Colorado defeats the top seeded Calgary Flames as the final wild card in the Western Conference.
