Both teams kept trading goals in the first period of this intense contest. Jeff Carter put Pittsburgh on the board early thanks to his wrist hot. Anthony Beauvillier made it a 1-1 game. Jake Guentzel got a power play goal to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 2-1 lead. Kyle Palmieri tied this game at 2-2 on a wrist shot. This game was tied 2-2 after one period of play.


Jason Zucker had a tip-in goal. Pittsburgh led 3-2. That would be Pittsburgh's last goal of the game.



Brock Nelson and Ryan Pulock went off in the second period. Nelson scored his first goal when he tied the game at 3-3. Ryan Pulock scored on a slap shot to give New York a 4-3 lead. Brock Nelson made it a 5-3 game.


Neither team scored in the third period. New York won 5-3 and will face the Boston Bruins in the second round.


Barry Trotz, knocked off the Penguins with the Washington Capitals in 2018 and then did the same thing with the New York Islanders in 2019 before taking the New York Islanders to the 2020 Eastern Conference Finals. This is now the third time in four years where Barry Trotz eliminated Mike Sullivan from the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs. There is already speculation that Mike Sullivan may get fired after three consecutive first round exits.
