Montreal Impact 2016 Season Preview
Posted By: Chris Ransom on 2/20/2016
The Montreal Impact have Didier Dragba as a striker. Dragba put together a comeback season with 11 goals. Age is an issue with Dragba. Their midfielder Ignacio Piatti had 8 goals, 9 assists, and led the Impact in shots.
Montreal also has forwards like Dominic Oduro, Andres Romaro, and Romario Williams for depth at striker makes the Impact very dangerous on offense. Sure they lost Dilly Duka, but they got Henry Shipp to replace Duka which seems like a long-term upgrade.
Montreal had a huge hole on defense. The Impact added Kyle Fisher out of Clemson who is expected to start right away. Evan Bush led the Impact with 99 saves.
This appears to be Montreal's most complete team. I think they can reach the playoffs and win another playoff game. Something tells me they will lose in the Eastern Conference Semifinals or even the Eastern Conference Finals. I don't see this team getting to the 2016 MLS Cup.
Prediction: The Montreal Impact could be this years let down team going from making the playoffs to regressing significantly. It depends on whether Dragba's play declines, whether Piatti can be a double digit assist man, how many minutes Kyle Fisher gets as a rookie, and whether Evan Bush can make all 100 saves. If one of those things happen, Montreal will be lucky to win another playoff series, but if all 4 of those things happened, the Impact could make a run towards the 2016 MLS Cup. At the end of the day, I see them exactly where they were last year. They may win a wild card game, but they will fall short of making the Eastern Conference Finals.
