2015 MLB Mock Draft: Final Mock 3 Rounds

Round 3

Posted By: Chris Ransom Last Updated: June, 8, 2015

  1. Arizona Diamondbacks: Ryan Mountcastle, 3B, Hagerty HS (FL)

Arizona needs an upgrade at third base. Ryan Mountcastle of Hagerty HS is one of the top third basemen left.

  2. Colorado Rockies: Greg Pickett, RF, Legend HS (CO)

The Rockies finally go after bats in after 2 rounds of drafting pitchers with 4 picks. Hometown high school bat Greg Pickett would be a huge upgrade at right fielder.

  3. Texas Rangers: Ryan Johnson, CF, College Station HS (TX)

The Texas Rangers get the best player available. At this point that player is Ryan Johnson.

  4. Houston Astros: Jake Lemoine, P, Houston

The Astros' take a hometown pitcher here. Jake Lemoine of the Houston Cougars is the top player available at this point.

  5. Minnesota Twins: Kep Brown, LF, Wando HS (SC)

The Twins take the top high school bat. At this point that player is Kep Brown.

  6. Boston Red Sox: Frank Vance, 3B, Wooster

The Red Sox grab a third baseman to add to their minor league system. Frank Vance would be a good player for the Red Sox to develop.

Frank Vance has a .405 batting average and leads Wooster with 81 hits. Vance can play for the Portland Sea Dogs in AA and eventually go to the Pawtucket Red Sox in AAA.

Previous Pick: Andrew Benintendi, CF, Arkansas

  7. Chicago Cubs: Andrew Stevenson, CF, LSU

The Chicago Cubs take another center fielder to put in their farm system. Andrew Stevenson's .349 batting average is better than Alex Bregmann's .335 batting average. Stevenson also has a 1.000 fielding percentage and 20 stolen bases making him a good prospect for the Cubs to develop. Once he hits more home runs in the minors, you could have a complete 5 tool player at center fielder if Albert Almora struggles to crack the Cubs' MLB roster.

  8. Philadelphia Phillies: Casey Hughston, CF, Alabama

Casey Hughston has the versatility to play anywhere in the outfield at left fielder, center fielder, or right fielder. Alabama's star outfielder had a .340 batting average with the Crimson Tide in 2015.

  9. Cincinnati Reds: Mitchell Traver, P, TCU

The Reds are in a position where they can take the best player available. I think the Reds would be better off taking pitcher in the first three rounds to develop though.

  10. Miami Marlins: Alex Robinson, P, Maryland

Miami grabs the top pitching prospect here. At this point, I think that's Alex Robinson out of Maryland.

  11. San Diego Padres: Tyler Krieger, SS, Clemson

Tyler Krieger has a .345 batting average with Clemson. His numbers are better than Steven Duggar who we have going in the second round because he leads Clemson with 47 runs scored.

San Diego could use a shortstop in their farm system. Krieger is the best player available at this point.

  12. Tampa Bay Rays: Christin Stewart, LF, Tennessee

Tampa Bay has to get a left fielder. Christin Stewart is the top player left.

  13. New York Mets: Donnie Dewees, CF, North Florida

The Mets get a center fielder here. Donnie Dewees has been having a monster season in 2015. The Ospreys center fielder has a .438 batting average, 96 hits, 15 home runs, 63 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases. Talk about a complete 5 tool bat. Dewees has good speed, but lacks throwing power to tag runners out. He can make the jump to the majors pretty quickly once he corrects that.

  14. Atlanta Braves: C.J. Hinojosa, SS, Texas

The Braves get another shortstop here. C.J. Hinojosa would be a good prospect for the Mississippi Braves in AA.

  15. Milwaukee Brewers: Drew Finley, P, Rancho Bernardo HS (CA)

The Brewers get another pitcher here. Drew Finley is the top pitcher left this late in the third round.

  16. Toronto Blue Jays: Nick Neidert, P, Peachtree Ridge HS (GA)

Toronto loves high school prospects. Nick Neidert out of Peachtree Ridge in Georgia is the top high school arm left in the third round.

  17. New York Yankees: Brett Lilek, P, Arizona State

The Yankees take Arizona State's #3 pitcher hoping for a future starter. At the end of the day he could get moved to a long reliever role with his constant no decisions on the mound.

  18. Cleveland Indians: Thomas Eshelman, P, Cal State Fullerton

Thomas Eshelman has a 6-5 record with a 1.79 ERA in 2015. The Tribe could use another pitcher like this as a #5 pitcher in the Indians' starting rotation.

  19. Seattle Mariners: Braden Bishop, CF, Washington

Seattle needs takes the top College player left. I think at this point that player has to be Brandon Bishop out of Washington, who would be a hometown guy for the Mariners.

  20. San Francisco Giants: Josh Staumont, P, Azusa Pacific

The Giants draft the final College Pitcher that can make a case for being a top 100 pick here. Josh Staumont is makes the most sense here.

  21. Pittsburgh Pirates: Jacob Taylor, P, Pearl River CC (JUCO)

The Pirates add another arm to an already deadly pitching staff on the Altoona Curve. Some of those players on the Curve will make the jump to AAA. One of the players who can fill that void in AA is Jacob Taylor, who plays for Pearl River Community College in Mississippi.

  22. Oakland Athletics: Kyle Dean, RF, Rancho Bernardo HS (CA)

Oakland adds the best player available. At this point that player is Kyle Dean out of Rancho Bernardo.

  23. Kansas City Royals: Lucas Herbert, C, San Clemente HS

Lucas Herbert is a complete catcher when you watch his tape. The Royals will get a steal if they take Herbert this late in the third round.

  24. Detroit Tigers: Brady Singer, P, Eustis HS (FL)

Brady Singer was the top player left. He's a player that you can develop. Worst case you get a AA arm. Best case scenario you get a replacement for Max Scherzer.

  25. St. Louis Cardinals: Tristan Beck, P, Corona HS (CA)

The Cardinals get a pitcher to send down to their farm system. Tristan Beck will join the Springfield Cardinals by 2016 in AA.

  26. Los Angeles Dodgers: Tristin English, P, Pike County HS (GA)

The Dodgers add another arm to their farm system. Tristan English makes a lot of sense for the Dodgers minor league system in single A and AA.

  27. Baltimore Orioles: Jackson Kowar, P, Charlotte Christian HS (NC)

Jackson Kowar can be a starting pitcher with the Bowie Bay Sox in AA. He will probably have to move to the bullpen if the Orioles call him up.

  28. Washington Nationals: Jake Woodford, P, Plant HS (FL)

Jake Woodford is a third round prospect. He's more of a third to fourth round pick rather than a sure fire third round pick. Still Washington takes him and assigns him to the Harrisburg Senators in AA.

  29. Los Angeles Angels Of Anaheim: Taylor Ward, C, Fresno State

Taylor Ward is ranked higher on boards than Jake Woodford. He plays like a fourth round pick and AAA prospect at best on tape which is why Ward fell to th Angels in this mock.

  30. St. Louis Cardinals: Antonio Santillan, P, Seguin HS (TX)

Antonio Santillan is my only third round prospect left. As a result the Cardinals take another best player available and continue to reload in their farm system.
