2015 NHL Mock Draft: Final Mock 7 Rounds

Round 2

Posted By: Chris Ransom Last Updated: June, 26, 2015

  1. Buffalo Sabres: Ilya Samsonov, G, Metallurg Magnitogorsk (KHL)

Ilya Samsonov only played one game in the KHL with a 5.50 GAA. He's dominated in the MHL though as he had a GAA of under 2.00, and maintained that low GAA of under 2.00 when he started 2 games for Russia at the World Junior Championships. McKeen's Hockey has Samosonov graded out as the 29th best player in the 2015 NHL Draft.

Samsonov has potential and many scouting services believe he's the top goalie in this years NHL Draft, yet is a major project in the making. He will need more experience in the KHL and possibly even AHL before making the jump to Buffalo.

Buffalo has Samsonov as the top goalie on their draft board. Buffalo needs to develop a new goalie, so Ilya Samsonov to Buffalo seems very likely.

  2. Arizona Coyotes: Ryan Pilon, D, Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL)

Ryan Pilon falls to Arizona. The Coyotes can go with the best player available here.

  3. Edmonton Oilers: MacKenzie Blackwood, G, Barrie Colts (OHL)

Edmonton has MacKenzie Blackwood graded out as a first round prospect. That's probably due to Blackwood's 6-4 205 lb size. With center and defense being Edmonton's two biggest needs, I expect the Oilers to draft their goalie for the future here if he slips to 33 after taking Connor McDavid and Oliver Kylington at 1 and 16.

Blackwood had a 2.98 GAA in 2013-2014, but that got worse when he posted a 3.09 GAA. His save percentage improved from .902 to .906. The one thing to like about Blackwood is that his statistics are better in the OHL Playoffs then they are in the regular season. That's good because it means Blackwood should have similar success in a few years if he's the starting goalie on the Edmonton Oilers when they make the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

  4. Columbus Blue Jackets: Nicolas Roy, C, Chicoutimi Sagueneens (QMJHL)

Nicholas Roy makes too much sense for Columbus here. Roy is the best player available for a team that could use some depth at center. Eventually, Roy will play for the Lake Erie Monsters in the AHL.

  5. Carolina Hurricanes: Brock Boeser, RW, Waterloo Blackhawks (USHL)

Both Brock Boeser and Thomas Vanek have the versatility to play left wing, center, and right wing. Brock Boeser is the top player on the board and some consider him to be a first round talent.

  6. New Jersey Devils: Thomas Vanek, LW, Waterloo Blackhawks (USHL)

Thomas Vanek can play anywhere at forward. Ray Shero covets players that carry that kind of versatility. I think Vanek goes to the Devils here.

  7. Boston Bruins: Jacob Larsson, D, Frouluda Indians (Elitserien)

The Bruins will need another hard ass on the blue line when Zdeno Chara retires. Larsson might be the answer.

  8. Columbus Blue Jackets: Eric Cernak, D, HC Kosice (Slovakia)

Columbus drafts for size on the blue line. Eric Cernak is 6-3 203 lbs. He's the kind of defenseman that the Blue Jackets would add with his size.

  9. San Jose Sharks: Dennis Yan, LW, Shawinigan Cataractes (QMJHL)

San Jose goes with a left winger after taking Ivan Provorov at 9. Dennis Yan is the top left winger left.

  10. Colorado Avalanche: Noah Juulsen, D, Everett Silvertips (WHL)

Colorado needs all the defenseman they can get. Noah Juulsen is the top defenseman left after passing on defense for Timo Meier at ten.

Juulsen grades out as one of the top North American Skaters left as 2 of the 6 main scouting services have Juulsen graded out as a late first round pick as well. The Everett Silvertips had Ryan Murray and Mirco Mueller get drafted as first round defenseman in 2012 and 2013. If Juulsen went in the first round, he'd be the third Silvertip on the blue line to be drafted in the first round in 4 years.

I have Juulsen going in the second round. If Colorado is picking, and Juulsen is still available, then he will be their second round pick.

  11. New Jersey Devils: Sebastian Aho, LW, Oulun Karpat (SM Liiga)

New Jersey double dips at left wing in the second round after taking Matthew Barzal in the first round. Newly hired General Manager Ray Shero understands the importance of drafting a quality offense after being the GM for so many years on the Pittsburgh Penguins. I like adding a left winger from Oulun Karpat here especially when you consider they just repeated in the SM Liiga league winning back-to-back championships.

  12. Ottawa Senators: Sebastian Aho, D, Skelleftea A.I.K. (Elitserien)

Ottawa uses this pick from the Dallas Stars in the Jason Spezza trade to draft a defenseman. Sebastian Aho played in the Elitserien Championship Game in all 3 seasons with Skelleftea A.I.K. What's even more impressive is that he started out on the third line as a rookie and moved up a line each season. Aho is undersized at 5-10 176 lbs, but he was one of 10 NHL Draft prospects to draw an invite to the World Junior Championships, which certainly raised his draft stock.

  13. Los Angeles Kings: Vince Dunn, D, Niagara IceDogs (OHL)

The Kings never replaced Willie Mitchell. Vince Dunn is a legit second round prospect that should be a top 50 pick. He lacks size, but he knows how to distribute the puck. Dunn plays like Dougie Hamilton on offense and Trevor Daily on defense.

  14. Tampa Bay Lightning: Jack Roslovic, RW, United States National Team Developmental Program (USHL)

Jack Roslovic has emerged into one of the fastest risers in the 2015 NHL Draft. He played on the first line of the United States National Team Developmental program with 2016 draft prospects Auston Matthews and Matthew Tkachuk who both look like top 10 picks in next years NHL Draft. Roslovic ended up surpassing Jeremy Bracco as the teams line 1 right winger after the first month of the USHL season.

  15. Calgary Flames: Mitch Vande Sompel, D, Oshawa Generals (OHL)

Calgary uses this pick to reload on defense. Mitch Vande Sompel is an offensive defenseman who played a vital role in helping the Oshawa Generals win the 2015 Memorial Cup.

  16. Pittsburgh Penguins: Travis Dermott, D, Erie Otters (OHL)

Pittsburgh goes defense once again. Travis Dermott is considered a mid second round pick. The Pittsburgh Penguins sent their scouts to see the Erie Otters three times this season. Once against the Kingston Frontenacs in the regular season before sending their scouts to see the Otters twice in the 2015 OHL Playoffs. Pittsburgh attended two home games for the Erie Otters with one game against the London Knights in the second round and then the Penguins went back to Erie to watch the Otters face the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the 2015 Western Conference Finals in the OHL.

Dermott had 28 points in his rookie season in 2013-2014 and followed that up with 45 points in 2014-2015. Dermott is the kind of offensive defenseman that Mike Johnston likes using to cycle the puck while also having the ability to be a quarterback on the power play.

  17. Winnipeg Jets: Julius Nattinen, C, JYP (SM Liiga)

Winnipeg continues to add offense. The Jets could use another defenseman, but Julius Nattinen is too good to pass on.

  18. Ottawa Senators: Sami Niku, D, JYP (SM Liiga)

Ottawa gets a second defenseman in the second round. Sebastian Aho is undersized, yet extremely talented on offense. Ottawa also needs to draft a bigger defenseman that is like a defensive defenseman. Niku is the best available player at this point which is why this is a good pick.

  19. Dallas Stars: Anthony Beauvillier, LW, Shawinigan Cataractes (QMJHL)

Anthony Beauviller is the top ranked player on the Dallas Stars draft board listed as the 38th best player available on their board. He posted 42 goals, 52 goals, and 94 points in 2014-2015.

Beauvillier can play any position on forward whether it is left wing, center, or right wing just like Timo Meier. He should play center, but with his 5-10 176 lb size, there's a strong chance he moves to left wing.

Previous Pick: Daniel Vladar, G, Rytiri Kladno

  20. Minnesota Wild: Daniel Vladar, G, Rytiri Kladno (Extraliga)

Devan Dubynk might get a contract extension. Even if Dubynk signs a huge contract you have to draft his successor here since Dubynk is 31-years-old.

Daniel Vladar also known as "Darth Vlader" like the famous Star Wars villain Darth Vader would be an awesome pick here. The Vancouver Canucks gave Ryan Miller a contract and drafted a developmental goalie in the second round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. I expect the Minnesota Wild to do the same thing in 2015 by giving Dubynk an extension and drafting a goalie here.

Previous Pick: Samuel Montembeault, G, Blainville-Boisbriand Armada

  21. Buffalo Sabres: Jeremy Bracco, RW, United States National Team Developmental Program (USHL)

Jeremy Bracco would be a good addition to the Buffalo Sabres here. Taking Bracco here is a smart decision since he's a first to second round pick.

  22. Calgary Flames: Yakov Trenin, LW, Gatineau Olympiques (QMJHL)

A player from the Gatineau Olympiques is selcd hee. Instead of going with Alexandre Carrier on defense, the Flames add left winger Yakov Trenin after trading Sven Bartschi to Vancouver for their 2015 2nd round pick.

  23. Calgary Flames: Jens Looke, RW, Brynas I.F. (Elitserien)

Calgary goes with a right winger. They have some talented guys, but none have the presence that Iginla provided.

  24. Chicago Blackhawks: Nicolas Meloche, D, Baie-Comeau Drakkar (QMJHL)

Nicolas Meloche would make a good fit for the Blackhawks. Johnny Oduya is not the same player he once was and the Blackhawks no longer have Nick Leddy. Drafting a defenseman is a priority here.

  25. Nashville Predators: Glenn Gawdin, C, Swift Current Broncos (WHL)

Glenn Gawdin is the top center left. This is a good pick.

  26. St. Louis Blues: Nicholas Boka, D, United States National Team Developmental Program (USHL)

The Blues get another defenseman. Nicholas Boka makes a lot of sense here.

  27. Edmonton Oilers: Roope Hintz, LW, Ilves (SM Liiga)

Edmonton grabs a left winger after trading Dave Perron to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Rope Hintz is now considered a late second round prospect.

  28. Columbus Blue Jackets: Parker Wotherspoon, D, Tri-City Americans (WHL)

Parker Wotherspoon falls to the bottom of round 2. Columbus can take the best player available.

  29. Arizona Coyotes: Tory Dello, D, Tri-City Storm (USHL)

Arizona adds another defenseman. Torry Dello would be a great pick here.

  30. New York Rangers: Adam Musil, C, Red Deer Rebels (WHL)

Adam Musil is the younger brother of Edmonton Oilers defenseman David Musil. Musil makes a lot of sense for the Rangers at this spot in the second round.

Previous Pick: Anthony Beauvillier, LW, Shawinigan Cataractes

  31. Philadelphia Flyers: Nikita Korostelev, RW, Sarnia Sting (OHL)

Philadelphia gets Nikita Korostelev here. Korostelev had more points in the regular season than Pavel Zacha, and is the best player available here. The Flyers took a center and left winger in the first round so it's only fitting for them to get a right winter in the second round.
