Chris Ransom follow @DraftUtopia Last Updated: June 28, 2024.

  1. Montreal Canadiens: Timur Kol, D, Avangard Omsk (KHL)

Montreal gets one more defenseman to stash and develop. Timur Kol is one of the better defensemen in Russia playing in the KHL.

The 6-3 198 lb Timur Kol couldn't produce any points in the KHL in 2023-2024. He's a good skater with ideal size that you look for in a defenseman. Timur Kol is under contract with Avangard Omsk in the KHL until 2025-2026. Timur Kol wouldn't have to sign a rookie contract until 2026-2027.

  2. Chicago Blackhawks: Austin Burnevick, RW, Madison Capitols (USHL)

Chicago gets a player who could develop into a fourth line right winger. Austin Bernevick is a great value pick at this point in the fifth round.

The 6-4 200 lb Austin Burnevick had 40 goals, 31 assists, 71 points, and a +21 +/- ratio in 61 games with the Madison Capitols in 2023-2024. Austin Burnevick had 2 goals, 0 assists, and 2 points in the 2024 USHL Playoffs. Austin Burnevick is heading to St. Cloud State this Fall.

  3. Colorado Avalanche: Lukas Matecha, G, Tri-City Americans (WHL)

Colorado uses this fifth round pick from Anaheim to draft a goalie for the future. Lukas Matecha is the best goalie on the board here in the fifth round.

The 6-3 190 lb Lukas Matecha went 13-19-12 in his first year as a starting goalie had a 3.42 goals against average and a .901 save percentage in 2023-2024. Lukas Matcha has one year of WHL eligibility left and then he would have to sign an entry level contract with the team that drafts him for 2025.

  4. Columbus Blue Jackets: Topias Hynninen ,C, Mikkelin Jukurit (SM Liiga)

Columbus drafts for value here. Topias Hynnien is a great fit for Columbus here in the fifth round.

The 5-10 170 lb Topias Hynninen had 1 goal, 8 assists, and 9 points on Mikkelin Jukurit in 2023-2024. Topias Hynninen will be a player that Columbus stashes and develops.

  5. Montreal Canadiens: Gennadi Chaly, D, Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL)

Montreal goes for value over need in the fifth round with most of their needs taken care of. Montreal drafts their second player on the Sioux Falls Stampede to stash and develop.

The 5-10 205 lb Gennadi Chaly had 13 goals, 15 assists, 28 points, and a -16 +/- ratio in 2023-2024. Gennadi Chaly is going to Vermont to play in the NCAA this Fall, so Montreal can stash and develop him for three years without signing him.

  6. Utah Hockey Club: Arvid Bergstrom, D, Djurgardens IF (Elitserien)

Utah drafts the best player available. Arvid Bergstrom is a good value pick here.

The 5-11 176 lb Arvid Bergstrom had 0 goals, 1 assist, and 1 point in 35 games with Djurgardens IF in 2023-2024. Arvid Bergstrom has one more year in Djurgardens IF, then Utah can sign him to an entry level contract in 2025 where he would most likely go to the AHL.

  7. Ottawa Senators: Daniel Nieminen, D, Lahti Pelicans (SM Liiga)

Ottawa gets a defenseman to develop for the future. Daniel Nieminen is a good value pick for Ottawa in the fifth round.

The 6-0 176 lb Daniel Nieminen had 8 goals, 21 assists, and 29 points with the Lahti Pelicans Under 20 Team in 2023-2024. Daniel Nieminen will play for the Lahti Pelicans main roster in Liiga in 2024-2025 with his contract running in Finland until 2026-2027. Ottawa can stash and develop Nieminen without having to sign him to an entry level deal until 2027.

  8. Colorado Avalanche: Jiri Tichacek, D, Rytiri Kladno (Extraliga)

Colorado uses this fifth round pick from Seattle to draft another defenseman. Jiri Tichacek is someone who can come up to the AHL right away.

The 5-9 170 lb Jiri Tichaeck had 13 goals, 30 assists, and 43 points in Extraliga 2023-2024. He's going to have to fix his +/- ratio in the AHL.

  9. Chicago Blackhawks: Anthony Cristoforo, D, Windsor Spitfires (OHL)
The Chicago Blackhawks use this pick from Calgary to get another prospect to stash and develop. Anthony Cristoforo makes a lot of sense for Chicago here.

The 5-11 191 lb Anthony Cristoforo had 7 goals, 31 assists, and 38 points in 2023-2024. Anthony Cristoforo had a -43 +/- ratio last year and that has to get fixed if Anthony Cristoforo wants an entry-level contract after his time in the OHL is up.

  10. New Jersey Devils: Conor Walton, D, Windsor Spitfires (OHL)

The New Jersey Devils draft for value here. New Jersey gets one of the better players on the board at this point in the fifth round.

The 6-4 208 lb Conor Walton had 1 goal, 14 assists, 15 points, and a -28 +/- ratio in 2023-2024. Conor Walton is a good passer, but he's got to develop his shot while also improving his +/- ratio next year. He has the skating, passing, and size that you want from an NHL defenseman down. The rest of his game is a project and that may limit him to the AHL.

  11. Minnesota Wild: Heikki Ruohonen, C, Espoo Blues (SM Liiga)

Minnesota goes for value here. Heikki Ruohonen is a nice value pick here.

The 6-1 196 lb Heikki Ruohonen had 20 goals, 27 assists, and 47 point as an alternate captain on the Espoo Blues Under 20 Team in 2023-2024. Heikki Ruohonen could be a player that ends up on the AHL after his contract in Finland is up. It is also possible he goes to the AHL right away if the team that drafts him signs him to a contract.

  12. Florida Panthers: Jacob Battaglia, RW, Kingston Frontenacs (OHL)

Florida adds another right winger to their prospect pool with this pick they got from the Philadelphia Flyers. Jacob Battaglia is the best right winger on the board in the fifth round.

The 6-0 205 lb Jacob Battaglia had 31 goals, 34 assists, and 65 points in 66 OHL games 2023-2024. Jacob Battaglia had 3 goals, 1 assist, and 4 points in 5 games during the 2024 OHL Playoffs.

  13. Minnesota Wild: Nathan Villeneuve, C, Sudbury Wolves (OHL)

Minnesota gets another center to develop for the future. The 6-0 183 lb Nathan Villeneuve had 23 goals, 27 assists, and 50 points with the Sudbury Wolves in 2023-2024. Nathan Villeneuve had 2 goals, 1 assist, and 3 points in 9 games during the 2024 OHL Playoffs.

  14. San Jose Sharks: Nate Misskey, D, Victoria Royals (WHL)

San Jose gets another defenseman to develop for the future. Nate Misskey might be able to be the number four defenseman on the San Jose Sharks down the road.

The 6-3 198 lb Nate Misskey had 7 goals, 27 assists, 34 points, and a +11 +/- ratio with the Victoria Royals in 2023-2024. Nate Misskey had 1 goal, 2 assists, and 3 points in the 2024 WHL Playoffs.

  15. Detroit Red Wings: Joona Saarelainen, C, Kalevan Pallo (SM Liiga)

Detroit drafts a center to develop for the long-term here. Joona Saarelainen is a nice addition at this point in the fifth round.

    `
The 5-9 176 lb Joona Saarelainen had 0 goals, 1 assist, and 1 point in 8 Liiga games with Kalevan Pallo in 2023-2024. Joona Saarelainen was also an alternate captain on Kalevan Pallo's Under 20 Team as well. He's most likely an AHL player, but could also be an NHL center on a fourth line if he reaches his ceiling.

  16. St. Louis Blues: Frankie Marrelli, D, Ottawa 67's (OHL)

The St. Louis Blues draft the best player on the board. Frankie Marrelli is another guy who could end up being a really good value pick in the fifth round.

The 5-11 187 lb Frankie Marrelli had 4 goals, 12 assists, 16 points, and a +28 +/- ratio in 2022-2023. Frankie Marrelli had 3 goals, 4 assists, and 7 points in the 2023 OHL Playoffs. Frankie Marrelli had 9 goals, 16 assists, 25 points, and a +30 +/- ratio in 2023-2024. Frankie Marrelli had 1 goal, 2 assists, and 3 points in the 2024 OHL Playoffs.

  17. Washington Capitals: Petr Sikora, C, HC Ocelari Trinec (Extraliga)

Washington drafts a center to groom for the future. Petr Sikora provides great value here in the fifth round.

The 6-0 174 lb Petr Sikora had 1 goal, 2 assists, and 3 points in 22 games with HC Ocelari Trinec in 2023-2024. Petr Sikora is a player that Washington might be able to develop into a fourth line player in the NHL down the road.

  18. New York Islanders: Alexandre Blias, LW, Rimouski Oceanic (QMJHL)

New York gets a left winger here. Alexandre Blias is a great value pick in the fifth round.

  19. Philadelphia Flyers: Matvei Shuravin, D, CSKA Moscow (KHL)

Philadelphia drafts a defenseman for the future. Matvei Shuravin is the best player available here.

The 6-2 172 lb Matvei Shuravin had 0 goals, 2 assists, and 2 points in 11 KHL games in 2023-2024. Matvei Shuravin seems to be a consensus top 60 player on 11/15 scouting services despite the fact that I have a fifth round grade on him.

  20. Tampa Bay Lightning: Mitja Jokinen, D, TPS (SM Liiga)

Tampa Bay drafts a defenseman with Victor Hedman in a contract year. Mitja Jokinen would make a great value pick for the Tampa Bay Lightning this late in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.

The 5-11 168 lb Mitja Jokinen had 6 goals, 15 assists, and 21 points on the TPS Under 20 Team in 2023-2024. TPS has Mitja Jokinen under contract until 2026. The NHL team that drafts Mitja Jokinen doesn't have to sign him to an entry-level contract until 2026-2027.

  21. Philadelphia Flyers: James Reeder, RW, Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL)

Philadelphia uses this pick from the Los Angeles Kings to add another value pick. James Reeder will not enroll in College until 2025, so the team that drafts him does not have to give him an entry-level contract until 2028.

The 5-9 168 lb James Reeder had 20 goals, 40 assists, 60 points, and a +11 +/- ratio as an alternate captain on the Dubuque Fighting Saints in 2023-2024. James Reeder had 1 goal, 4 assists, and 5 points in the 2024 USHL Playoffs.

James Reeder has one more year with the Dubuque Fighting Saints. James Reeder will head to Denver in 2025.

  22. Chicago Blackhawks: Eric Burger, D, Orebro HK (Elitserien)

Chicago uses this pick from Nashville to draft another defender. Eric Burger would be a good value pick.

The 6-0 181 lb Eric Burger had 0 goals, 0 assists, and 0 points in 6 SHL games with Orebro HK in 2023-2024. Eric Burger had more success on Orebro HK's Under 20 Team and would most likely be an AHL player for the NHL team that drafts him.

  23. Toronto Maple Leafs: Tanner Adams, RW, Providence

Toronto drafts a right winger. Tanner Adams showed promise for a freshman at Providence.

The 5-11 184 lb Tanner Adams had 6 goals, 15 assists, 21 points, and a +1 +/- ratio in 2023-2024. Tanner Adams can continue to develop at Providence for two to three more years even if an NHL team decides to draft him.

  24. New Jersey Devils: Karl Sterner, RW, Frolunda Indians (Elitserien)

New Jersey drafts a right winger. Karl Sterner is Frolunda's top prospect in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.

The 6-3 187 lb Karl Sterner had 15 goals, 19 assists, and 34 points with the Frolunda Indians Under 20 Team in 2023-2024. Karl Sterner is returning to Frolunda's Under 20 Team next year and there is no sign of when he will get promoted to Frolunda's main roster in Sweden.

  25. Boston Bruins: Matvei Babenko, RW, Salavat Yulaev Ufa (KHL)

The Boston Bruins get a right winger for the future. Matvei Babenko may warrant a flyer here.

The 6-3 201 lb Matvei Babenko is versatile enough to play both left winger and right winger. Matvei Babenko had 1 goal, 0 assists, and 1 point in 2023-2024.

  27. Carolina Hurricanes: Oskar Vuollet, C, Skelleftea AIK (Elitserien)

Carolina gets a center to develop for the future. Oskar Vuollet was a preseason first round prospect for me back in October.

The 5-11 181 lb Oskar Vuolett had 19 goals, 30 assists, and 49 points on Skelleftea AIK's Under 20 Team in 2022-2023. Oskar Vuollett had 29 goals, 32 assists, and 61 points on Skelletfea AIK's Under 20 Team in 2023-2024.

Oskar Vuolett has the speed, explosion, burst, agility, skating, foot speed, playmaking, passing, sniping, wrist shot power, wrist shot accuracy, slap shot power, slap shot accuracy, vision, offensive awareness, defensive awareness, and hockey IQ to succeed in the NHL. Oskar Vuolett needs to develop his physicality, but he will have plenty of time to enhance that area of his game. His contract in Sweden runs through 2026.

  28. Toronto Maple Leafs: Edvin Nilsson, D, HV71 (Elitserien)

The Toronto Maple Leafs own the Vancouver Canucks fifth round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. Edvin Nilsson feels like a prototypical Swedish defenseman that the Maple Leafs brass would fall head over heels for.

The 5-11 183 lb Edvin Nilsson had 4 goals, 10 assists, and 14 points in 2023-2024. Edvin Nilsson will enroll at Massachusetts also known as UMass in 2025.

  29. Dallas Stars: Pavel Moysevich, G, SKA Saint Petersburg (KHL)

The Dallas Stars use their second pick of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft on a backup goalie for Jake Oettinger after using their first round pick on a defenseman. Pavel Moysevich is a great value pick this late in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.

The 6-5 176 lb Pavel Moysevich posted a 1.25 goals against average and .942 save percentage in 13 starts with SKA Saint Petersburg in the KHL in 2023-2024. Pavel Moysevich posted a 1.21 goals against average and .941 save percentage in the 2024 KHL Playoffs. Pavel Moysevich has the lowest goals against average and highest save percentage of any goalie in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. Dallas gets him as their future backup to Jake Oettinger as SKA Saint Petersburg owns his rights until 2026-2027 meaning Dallas doesn't have to sign Moysevich to an entry level contract until 2027-2028.

  30. New York Rangers: Markus Loponen, C, Oulun Karpat (SM Liiga)

The New York Rangers go for value over need. Markus Loponen could be a really good value pick here.

The 6-1 185 lb Markus Lopenen had 25 goals, 29 assists, and 54 points as the team captain of Oulun Karpat's Under 20 Team in 2023-2024. It's uncertain if Markus Loponen returns to Olun Kaprat's Under 20 Team, goes to Oulun Karpat's main roster in Liiga, or signs his entry-level contract and goes straight to the AHL after an NHL team drafts him.

  31. Edmonton Oilers: Christian Kirsch, G, EV Zug (National League A)

Edmonton drafts a backup goalie for Stuart Skinner. Calvin Pickard whose a UFA and Jack Campbell aren't great long-term options for a backup goalie.

The 6-4 190 lb Christian Kirsch posted a 2.32 goals against average and a .911 save percentage in 30 games with EV Zug's Under 20 Team. Christian Kirsch will play for the Green Bay Gamblers in the USHL this Fall. He will be the backup goalie to Michael Hrabel on Massachusetts in 2025.
