2017 Fantasy Baseball Second Base Rankings

Chris Ransom follow @DraftUtopia Last Updated: February 9, 2017.
- Jose Altuve, 2B, Houston Astros
- Jose Altuve improved his batting average from .313 to .338 in 2016. He also had 24 home runs. Altuve is playing like a potential top 5 pick right now and provides so much value as the only second baseman projected to go in the first two rounds.
- Daniel Murphy, 2B, Washington Nationals
- Daniel Murphy batted .347 and had 25 home runs in 2016. Murphy did an awesome job refining his batting technique upon ariving in the Nations Capital.
- Robinson Cano, 2B, Seattle Mariners
- Robinson Cano batted .298 and hit 39 home runs in 2016. His 103 RBIs were another thing that kept the Mariners in ball games.
- Brian Dozier, 2B, Minnesota Twins
- Brian Dozier hit 42 home runs last season. He was the only player that gave this horrendous Twins team any spark in 2016.
- Rougned Odor, 2B, Texas Rangers
- Rougned Odor hit 33 home runs in 2016. Odor is going to be a work in progress in 2017.
- Ian Kinsler, 2B, Detroit Tigers
- Ian Kinsler provides good value in auction leagues. He may outperform one or two of the second baseman on our list making a case as to why he is a top 5 second baseman.
- Jason Kipnis, 2B, Cleveland Indians
- Jason Kipnis had a career year in 2016 with 23 home runs. Expect another year with Kipnis posting a .290 batting average and 20 home runs. Kipnis is one of the safer bets in Fantasy Baseball.
- Dee Gordon, 2B, Miami Marlins
- Dee Gordon is one of the leagues best base stealers. If he can revert to his .333 batting average without using performance enhancers then he could be a good pick.
- Javier Baez, 2B, Chicago Cubs
- Javier Baez has multiple position ability and 40 home run potential. He's also capable of getting 125 strikeouts, but that potential is what makes Baez a top 10 second baseman.
- DJ LeMahieu, 2B, Colorado Rockies
- DJ LeMahieu had a .348 batting average in 2016. LeMahieu may be due for a breakout season with 35 home runs. If he can maintain his .300 batting average and hit 35 home runs he will be a top 10 second baseman in most leagues.
- Dustin Pedroia, 2B, Boston Red Sox
- Dustin Pedroia batted .318 in 2016. Pedroia is still one of the leagues most effective third baseman even after making his MLB debut back in 2006. Pedroia had 74 RBI's last season and is an effective second baseman.
- Jonathan Schoop, 2B, Baltimore Orioles
- Jonathan Schoop had 82 RBI's and 164 hits in 2016. Schoop really improved and took that next step as a second baseman in 2016. Schoop has to maintain that success in 2017 if the Orioles have any hope of returning to the 2017 MLB Playoffs.
- Devon Travis, 2B, Toronto Blue Jays
- Devon Travis posted a .304 and .300 batting average each of his last two seasons. Surgeries in the Winter make him a player with durability concerns.
- Ben Zobrist, 2B, Chicago Cubs
- Ben Zobrist was the 2016 World Series MVP. He deserves credit for that. He's not as young or as flashy as Javier Baez though.
- Logan Forsythe, 2B, Los Angeles Dodgers
- Logan Forsythe was on the Tampa Bay Rays. The Los Angeles Dodgers traded for him this offseason though so he may do better than I am expecting him to do.
- Neil Walker, 2B, New York Mets
- Neil Walker does just enough to provide with batting average, home runs, and RBI's. He's not the player he once was on the Pittsburgh Pirates, but he's effective enough to be a borderline starter on most Fantasy Teams.
- Jedd Gyorko, 2B, St. Louis Cardinals
- Jedd Gyorko hit 30 home runs in 2016. Gyorko needs another big year in order to get noticed.
- Joe Panik, 2B, San Francisco Giants
- Joe Panik is a backup second baseman at this point in most Fantasy Baseball leagues. If Panik can bat .290 and match his 62 RBI's from 2016 then he could be a starter again in Fantasy Baseball leagues next season.
- Cesar Hernandez, 2B, Philadelphia Phillies
- Cesar Hernandez could hit .290 with 90 runs and 30 stolen bases. What is that worth to you. I see someone who can hit anywhere between 30 and 90 runs, but how many runs Hernandez hits determines his stock.
- Brandon Phillips, 2B, Atlanta Braves
- Brandon Phillips enters a contract year. I expect the Cincinnati Reds to deal him at the 2017 MLB Trade Deadline. They moved him to the Atlanta Braves.
