Tony Mario's 2022 NFL Mock Draft: Final Mock 7 Rounds

Round 5

Tony Mario follow @DraftUtopia Last Updated: April 28, 2022.

  1. Carolina Panthers: Joshua Williams, CB, Fayetteville State

Joshua Williams is versatile enough to play cornerback, strong safety, and free safety. Carolina adds Williams for depth at all three of those positions since Carolina has quality starters at cornerback with Jaycee Horn, Donte Jackson, and C.J. Henderson at cornerback. Carolina has Jeremy Chinn at strong safety and Xavier Woods at free safety.

  2. Denver Broncos: Michael Clemons, 3-4 LOLB, Texas A&M

The Denver Broncos add one more pass rusher for depth here. Randy Gregory and Bradley Chubb are the starters for Denver at 3-4 outside linebacker. Bradley Chubb can't stay healthy so Clemons would be his backup.

  3. New York Jets: Velus Jones Jr., WR, Tennessee

The Jets add a return specialist here. Velus Jones Jr. gives the New York Jets their return specialist.

  4. New York Giants: Kevin Austin Jr., WR, Notre Dame

The New York Giants have placed 2021 first round pick K'Darius Toney on the trading block. This leads me to believe that the New York Giants may try to find another wide receiver for depth in the fifth round after getting day 1 starters in the first four rounds. New York would still have Kenny Golladay, Sterling Shephard, and Darius Slayton as their top three receivers even if they dealt Toney.

  5. Chicago Bears: Jack Jones, CB, Arizona State

Chicago drafts a cornerback for depth here to compliment Jaylon Johnson, Kindle Vildor, and nickel cornerback Tavon Young. Jack Jones played with Chase Lucas at Arizona State. Both cornerbacks are in the 2022 NFL Draft, but I like Jones more of the two.

  6. Carolina Panthers: Yusef Corker, SS, Kentucky

Carolina drafts Yusef Corker for depth at safety. He'll be the replacement for Juston Burris here since Burris enters the final year of his contract.

  7. Chicago Bears: Neil Farrell Jr., DT, LSU

With Chicago switching to a 4-3 defense, Neil Farrell Jr. may end up starting here as a day 1 starter. He just needs to beat out Khyiris Tonga Chicago's 2021 seventh round pick out of BYU. Neil Farrell Jr. held Alabama to an All Time low 6 rushing yards in one game. This makes Neil Farrell Jr. a perfect replacement to both Eddie Goldman and Bilal Nichols as Neil Farrell Jr. pairs with Justin Jones.

  8. Atlanta Falcons: Kyren Williams, RB, Notre Dame

Kyren Williams gives Atlanta a third running back for depth behind Cordarrelle Patterson and Mike Davis. Kyren Williams is a great value pick for Atlanta here as he was once considered a top 5 running back in the 2022 NFL Draft at one point.

  9. Seattle Seahawks: Alec Lindstrom, C, Boston College

The Seattle Seahawks get their future starting center here. Alec Lindstrom is a superb value pick for the Seattle Seahawks. He's skilled enough to beat out Austin Blythe for the starting center job, and will provide depth behind Blythe at center at the very worst. Lindstrom will be Seattle's starting center by 2023 at the very latest.

  10. Seattle Seahawks: Kalia Davis, DT, Central Florida

Seattle adds depth at 4-3 defensive tackle. Kalia Davis makes sense for Seattle since they have a history of drafting guys out of Central Florida. Both of the Griffin brothers were drafted by Seattle.

  11. Philadelphia Eagles: Jeremy Ruckert, TE, Ohio State

The Philadelphia Eagles drafted Zach Ertz to replace Brent Celek and then drafted Dallas Goedert to replace Ertz. Jeremy Ruckert could be a very good number two tight end in the right role so he goes to Philadelphia in the fifth round to compliment Ertz.

  12. Dallas Cowoys: Darrell Baker Jr., CB, Georgia Southern

The Dallas Cowboys draft a cornerback for depth in case they have to cut Kelvin Joseph. The 2021 second round pick out of Kentucky was recently investigated for murder.

  13. Minnesota Vikings: Lecitus Smith, LG, Virginia Tech

Minnesota drafts a guard for depth behind left guard Ezra Cleveland and right guard Wyatt Davis. Lecitus Smith is a good backup left guard for Minnesota to have. He'd also be re-united with Christian Darrisaw who played next to him on the left side of Virginia Tech's offensive line.

  14. Jacksonville Jaguars: Isaiah Pola-Mao, FS, USC

Jacksonville's current starting safeties are strong safety Andrew Wingard and free safety Rayshawn Jenkins. Andre Cisco, Jacksonville's 2021 third round pick out of Syracuse is the backup strong safety. Isaiah Pola-Mao would be a backup free safety in this scenario. He'd only start if two of Jacksonville's top three safeties in wingard, Jenkins, and Cisco were injured.

  15. New England Patriots: Obinna Eze, LT, TCU

Obinna Eze is gonna remind Patriots of another former TCU offensive tackle they had in Marcus Cannon. He goes to New England as a backup left tackle for Isaiah Wynn here.

  16. Indianapolis Colts: Jake Ferguson, TE, Wisconsin

Indianapolis replaces Jack Doyle with Jake Ferguson. This gives the Colts Mo Alie-Cox, Kyler Granson, and Jake Ferguson as the top three tight ends on the Indianapolis Colts depth chart.

  17. Los Angeles Chargers: Kalon Barnes, CB, Baylor

The Los Angeles Chargers have J.C. Jackson at field cornerback, Michael Davis at boundary cornerback, and Asante Samuel Jr. at nickel cornerback after having to play Asante Samuel Jr. as a field cornerback against number one receivers despite his size. Th Chargers don't have any depth behind these cornerbacks. Kalon Barnes is a nice depth player for the Chargers to add here.

  18. New Orleans Saints: D.J. Davidson, DT, Arizona State

New Orleans needs multiple upgrades at 4-3 defensive tackle. D.J. Davidson could be a day 1 starter at 4-3 defensive tackle for the New Orleans Saints given how thin the Saints are at this position.

  19. Philadelphia Eagles: James Empey, C, BYU

Philadelphia gets a center fo depth behind Landon Dickerson once Jason Kelce retires. The Eagles do this just in case Dickerson is better off remaining at guard.

  20. New York Jets: Matt Araiza, P, San Diego State

The New York Jets get a player on special teams that can be used as both a kicker and a punter. Matt Araiza is the top punter in the 2022 NFL Draft, but he's also got experience at kicker too with kicking field goals and kickoffs.

  21. Las Vegas Raiders: Josh Thompson, CB, Texas

The Las Vegas Raiders have Trayvon Mullen, Nate Hobbs, and Rock Ya-Sin as their top three cornerbacks with Amik Robertson as their only cornerback for depth. Josh Thompson was good on film in two games against Texas Tech and Arkansas despite only having one deflection all season. I think Thompson can handle a depth role where he's only used in quarters packages with the Las Vegas Raiders until an injury occurs.

  22. Las Vegas Raiders: DeAngelo Malone, LOLB, Western Kentucky

Las Vegas gets Jayon Brown's replacement in DeAngelo Malone who starts out as a depth player behind Brown. The Raiders could use his pass rushing moves situationally like the Carolina Panthers did with Hassan Reddick last year.

  23. Philadelphia Eagles: Skylar Thompson, QB, Kansas State

I'm disappointed that Skylar Thompson didn't make Chris Ransom's seven round mock, but he begins his career as a third string quarterback in Philadelphia, and could be the backup to Jalen Hurts by 2023 after Gardner Minshew II's rookie deal is up. Thompson helped Kansas State beat Oklahoma twice once in 2019 when Jalen Hurts started at Oklahoma and once again in 2020 when Spencer Rattler started. If Thompson could throw the ball with more velocity he'd have the upside to be a starter since he's a great decision maker. The one team left in this draft that may be able to turn Thompson into a starting quarterback is the Philadelphia Eagles.

  24. Dallas Cowboys: Ty Fryfogle, WR, Indiana

Dallas finally drafts a wide receiver for depth here. Ty Fryfogle is worth a gamble on in the fifth round. He provides depth to CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup, and Noah Brown without posing as a threat to take their jobs.

  25. Buffalo Bills: Brian Robinson Jr., RB, Alabama

Buffalo adds one more running back for depth here. Buffalo already has Devin Singletary in a contract year, Duke Johnson, and Zack Moss. Brian Robinson Jr. would be another nice addition to Buffalo's running back room.

  26. Tennessee Titans: Dane Belton, SS, Iowa

The Tennessee Titans add a strong safety for depth here. Dane Belton can play nickel cornerback, strong safety, or free safety. He's more versatile than advertised.

  27. Houston Texans: Chris Hinton, DT, Michigan

Houston drafts a 4-3 defensive tackle for depth. Chris Hinton is a great value pick in the late fifth round.

  28. Green Bay Packers: Damari Mathis, CB, Pittsburgh

Green Bay drafts a second cornerback for depth here. Damari Mathis is versatile enough to play cornerback, strong safety, and free safety with his versatility.

  29. San Francisco 49ers: Isaiah Thomas, LE, Oklahoma

San Francisco adds a 4-3 left end for depth. An edge rusher next to Nick Bosa is needed. It's uncertain if Arik Armstead, Dee Ford Armstead plays 4-3 defensive tackle, Samson Ekubam, Kemoko Turay, or Isaiah Thomas starts next to Bosa. San Francisco would have a good competition in training camp with five of those guys not named Bosa pushing each other for roster spots.

  30. New York Giants: JT Woods, FS, Baylor

The New York Giants add a free safety to push Julian Love for the free safety job. JT Woods is a good value pick at this point in the fifth round.

  31. Cincinnati Bengals: Nick Grant, SS, Virginia

Cincinnati gets Virginia cornerback/safety Nick Grant for depth at safety behind strong safety Von Bell and free safety Jessie Bates III. Nick Grant is versatile enough to play cornerback, strong safety, or free safety.

  32. Los Angeles Rams: Montaric Brown, CB, Arkansas

The Los Angeles Rams add a cornerback for depth here. David Long Jr. enters a contract year and if Montaric Brown is as good as Jerry Jacobs, he could end up being the Los Angeles Rams nickel cornerback by 2023.

  33. Dallas Cowboys: Cade Hall, RE, San Jose State

The Dallas Cowboys got this compensation pick at 176 for losing their backup Andy Dalton to the Chicago Bears in the 2021 NFL Free Agency period. I think it's absolutely hillarious that Jerry Jones got a compensation pick because a team decided to overpay his backup quarterback Andy Dalton.

Dallas needs a 4-3 right end next to Demarcus Lawrence. I don't trust Dante Fowler Jr. to be a long-term solution. Cade Hall is a good pick here with tremendous leadership as he was one of San Jose State's defensive captains.

  34. Detroit Lions: Darrian Beavers, 3-4 MLB, Cincinnati

The Detroit Lions got this compensation pick at 177 for losing wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. who signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Marvin Jones Jr. had 73 receptions, 832 receiving yards, and 4 receiving touchdowns in 2021 after having 76 receptions, 978 receiving yards, and 9 receiving touchdowns in 2020 during his final season with the Lions prior to arriving in Jacksonville.

Darrian Beavers can line up as an edge rusher or 3-4 middle linebacker. Detroit adds him for depth at 3-4 middle linebacker here.

  35. Dallas Cowboys: Tyler Badie, RB, Missouri

The Dallas Cowboys got this compensation pick at 178 for losing their 2017 second round pick Chidobe Awuzie to the Cincinnati Bengals. Chidobe Awuzie finally blossomed into the number one field cornerback he was when he played at Colorado in his first season with the Cincinnati Bengals while being the number one corner on Cincinnati's Super Bowl 57 team.

Dallas replaces Tony Pollard with Tyler Badie. Missouri's running back could be a really good backup to Ezekiel Elliott. Heck he may even be able to start if Dallas cuts Ezekiel Elliott..

  36. Indianapolis Colts: Eyioma Uwazurike, DT, Iowa State

The Indianapolis Colts got this compensation pick at 179 for losing defensive tackle Denico Autry to the division rival Tennessee Titans. Denico Autry showed he could start at 3-4 left end next to 2019 first round pick Jeffrey Simmons.

The Indianapolis Colts get a great replacement to Denico Autry and Kemoko Turay in a depth role here. Eyioma Uwarzurike lined at 3-4 defensive end at 3-4 right end an 3-4 left end. He won a one-on-one against first round prospect Trevor Penning making him an nice value pick for Indianapolis to end the fifth round.
