Tony Mario's 2022 NFL Mock Draft: Final Mock 7 Rounds

Round 6

Tony Mario follow @DraftUtopia Last Updated: April 28, 2022.

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Antonio Valentino, 3-4 RE, Florida

Jacksonville gets a player who could be a 3-4 right end for depth behind Malcolm Brown here which is something they've needed for a while on their defensive line. Antonio Shelton the former Penn State defensive tackle changed his last name to Antonio Valentino when he trasnferred to Florida.

  2. Detroit Lions: Chris Steele, CB, USC

The Detroit Lions get another cornerback for depth here in the sixth round. USC cornerback Chris Steele could be a really good late round value pick.

  3. New York Giants: Andrew Stueber, RG, Michigan

New York drafts a right guard for depth here. It's pretty ironic that Andrew Stueber will be competing against former Michigan teammate Ben Bredeson for a roster spot in New York.

  4. New England Patriots: Tre' Williams, 3-4 ROLB, Arkansas

New England now has four different 3-4 outside linebackers. Matt Judon remains the starting 3-4 right outside linebacker. Josh Uche and Ronnie Perkins will compete for the 3-4 left outside linebacker job with Kyle Van Noy gone. Tre' Williams provides depth behind Matt Judon. Maybe Belichick thinks he can make a difference with this Arkansas edge rusher. Belichick has gotten Arkansas pass rushers in the past such as Trey Flowers and Deatrich Wise Jr.

  5. Minnesota Vikings: Cole Kelley, QB, Southeastern Louisiana

Cole Kelley has great size and a rocket arm. He's someone who can come in and compete with Sean Mannion and Kellen Mond for one of the two backup quarterback spots behind Kirk Cousins on the Minnesota Vikings depth chart.

  6. Buffalo Bills: Alex Wright, LE, UAB

Buffalo has Von Miller and Gregory Rosseau as their starting 4-3 defensive ends at edge rusher. Buffalo also has A.J. Epenesa as the backup 4-3 right end with Carlos Basham Jr. Buffalo has Shaq Lawson as a third string pass rusher at 4-3 right end despite losing Jerry Hughes and Mario Addison. Buffalo drafting a sixth edge rusher for depth at 4-3 left end really wouldn't surprise me to be completely honest.

  7. Chicago Bears: Tariq Carpenter, SS, Georgia Tech

Chicago needs a starting strong safety next to free safety Eddie Jackson. Tariq Carpenter wowed NFL scouts at Georgia Tech's 2022 Pro Day.

  8. San Francisco 49ers: Chase Lucas, CB, Arizona State

Chase Lucas is a great value pick in the sixth round who has great foot speed and excels in coverage. Chase Lucas might be talented enough to beat out Ambry Thomas for the San Francisco 49ers nickel cornerback job.

  9. Jacksonville Jaguars: Cade Mays, LG, Tennessee

Jacksonville brings in left guard competiton for Ben Bartch and Willie Richardson who enters a contract year. Cade Mays would be a nice backup left guard for the Jacksonville Jaguars down the road.

  10. Washington Commanders: Decobie Durant, CB, South Carolina State

Washington gets a potential day 1 starter who can push William Jackson III for the number one cornerback spot as a rookie. I wanted to put Ole Miss cornerback Keidron Smith here, but he went back to school and entered the transfer portal. Decobie Durant has really good game film for a small school cornerback which is why I'm mocking him to the Commanders in the sixth round. Durant also has three consecutive seasons with 12 deflections from pass breakups.

  11. Atlanta Falcons: Juanyeh Thomas, FS, Georgia Tech

Atlanta drafts an in state player here. Juanyeh Thomas would be a good backup that Atlanta could add for depth. Georgia Tech has two sixth round safeties you need to keep an eye on.

  12. Minnesota Vikings: Jaquarii Roberson, WR, Wake Forest

Jaquarii Roberson was the number one receiver on a Wake Forest Football team that started the season 8-0 and got to this years ACC Championship game representing the Atlantic Division. Jaquarii Roberson gives Minnesota more depth at wide receiver.

  13. Minnesota Vikings: Mike Rose, 3-4 MLB, Iowa State

Minnesota has Eric Kendricks and Jordan Hicks as their 3-4 middle linebackers with Troy Dye behind Hicks. Minnesota doesn't have a backup 3-4 middle linebacker for Eric Kendricks so this is where Mike Rose comes into play.

  14. Dallas Cowbos: Terrell Bernard, LOLB, Baylor

Dallas drafts Terrell Bernard to compete with Jabril Cox for playing time in nickel situations. Whoever wins that competition between Cox and Bernard can start next to Leighton Vander Esch and Micah Parsons with those two being interchangable at 4-3 right outside linebacker and 4-3 middle linebacker.

  15. New Orleans Saints: Charleston Rambo, WR, Miami FL

New Orleans gets a second wide receiver for depth here. Charleston Rambo does a great job catching the ball in traffic.

  16. Los Angeles Chargers: Markquese Bell, SS, Florida A&M

The Chargers get a safety for depth behind Derwin James and Nasir Adderley. Markquese Bell would be a nice backup to Derwin James.

  17. Baltimore Ravens: Leon O'Neal, SS, Texas A&M

Baltimore has Chuck Clark at strong safety and Marcus Williams at free safety. Leon O'Neal is someone that Baltimore can groom to replace Chuck Clark here in the sixth round.

  18. Jacksonville Jaguars: Chigoziem Okonkwo, TE, Maryland

Jacksonville has Evan Engram and Luke Farrell. Chigoziem Okonkwo can push Luke Farrell for the backup tight end job. Whoever wins that could take over for Evan Engram at tight end in 2023.

  19. Jacksonville Jaguars: Khalil Shakir, WR, Boise State

Jacksonville gets a fourth receiver for the long-term. Khalil Shakir can run all 30 routes on the route tree. He's one of three receivers that can run more routes than Jahan Dotson. I could see Jahan Dotson and Khalil Shakir beating out Zay Jones for a starting receiver spot next to Christian Kirk.

  20. Carolina Panthers: Tyquan Thornton, WR, Baylor

Carolina has D.J. Moore and Terrace Marshall Jr. for the long-term. Roby Anderson has become kind of a diva on social media after unfollowing Sam Darnold on Instagram and saying no when rumors about Baker Mayfield being traded to the Panthers. Tyquan Thornton might be a good replacement for Roby Anderson here.

  21. New England Patriots: Jeremiah Gemmel, 3-4 MLB, North Carolina

New England gets a second 3-4 middle linebacker for depth to compliment Raekwon McMillan on their second team with Ju'Whan Bentley and Christian Harris as the starting 3-4 middle linebackers.

  22. Arizona Cardinals: Danny Gray, WR, SMU

Arizona has DeAndre Hopkins and Rondale Moore as their top two receiving targets. A slot receiver to compliment both of them is still needed though. Arizona manages to land their fourth day 1 starter of this draft with their fourth draft pick in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

  23. Cleveland Browns: Glen Logan, DT, LSU

Cleveland has Taven Bryant, Jordan Elliott, and Tommy Togaia at 4-3 defensive tackle. One more 4-3 defensive tackle for depth is needed and this is where Glen Logan comes into play. LSU's defensive tackle tandem of Neil Farrell Jr. and Glen Logan held Alabama's offense to an All Time low 6 rushing yards. It's a big reason why I got both LSU defensive tackles getting drafted.

  24. Buffalo Bills: Austin Deculus, RT, LSU

The Buffalo Bills draft a second offensive tackle. This guy is gonna push Tommy Doyle for the backup right tackle job. Right now Bobby Hart is the third string right tackle and after getting cut by the Bills in training camp last year, an upgrade over Hart at right tackle needs to be made. It's also worth pointing out that Deculus was the starting right tackle on LSU's 15-0 National Championship team in 2019.

  25. Tennessee Titans: Jelani Woods, TE, Virginia

Tennessee replaces Austin Firkser with Virginia tight end Jelani Woods. Woods will begin as a backup to Austin Hooper, but could emerge if Hooper gets injured or disappoints in his third and final chance as a starting tight end.

  26. Houston Texans: Jerome Ford, RB, Cincinnati

This is a great landing spot for Houston running back Jerome Ford. Right now Houston has three running backs on their depth chart. I really don't see anyone who stands out besides Rex Burkhead. Jerome Ford could see action as the second running back on Houston's depth chart besides Burkhead. If Ford breaks out in limited carries, he could easily end up as Houston's starting running back by the time the 2022 NFL Regular Season ends.

  27. Denver Broncos: Reed Blankenship, SS, Middle Tennessee State

Denver gets one more safety for depth with Caden Sterns starting at strong safety and Justin Simmons starting at free safety. Reed Blankenship lined up at both strong safety and free safety on film against Virginia Tech.

  28. Houston Texans: Luke Wattenberg, C, Washington

Cleveland sat Luke Wattenberg's predecessor Nick Harris for two years behind J.C. Tretter before making him the Cleveland Browns starting center. Expect the Houston Texans to take a similar approach here with an injury prone Justin Britt as the Houston Texans current starting center.

  29. Pittsburgh Steelers: Isaac Taylor-Stuart, CB, USC

The Pittsburgh Steelers draft a second cornerback for depth. Isaac Taylor-Stewart ran a 4.42 40-time at the 2022 NFL Combine and complimented USC cornerback Chris Steele in 2021.

  30. Cincinnati Bengals: Cole Turner, TE, Nevada

Cincinnati's top two tight ends are Hayden Hurst and Drew Sample, Cincinnati's 2019 second round pick who filled in when C.J. Uzomah suffered a season ending injury. It's also worth pointing out that Sample is on the final year of his rookie deal. If neither Hurst or Sample steps up with Uzomah gone in 2022, Cole Turner could easily be Joe Burrow's starting tight end in 2023. Turner did well at tight end with Carson Strong, plus he had a good week at the 2022 Reese's Senior Bowl.

  31. New England Patriots: Smoke Monday, FS, Auburn

New England has Devin McCourty at free safety, Adrian Phillips at strong safety, Kyle Dugger for depth, and Jabrill Peppers for depth. If Peppers moves to a special teams or nickel corner role, one more safety could be added to New England's depth chart in the sixth round.

  32. Los Angeles Rams: Matt Waletzko, LT, North Dakota

The Los Angeles Rams got this compensation pick at 211 for losing their 2017 second round pick Gerald Everett, who left Los Angeles to sign a contract with the NFC West arch rival Seattle Seahawks. The former South Alabama tight end only spent one season with Seattle before the Seahawks moved on from Everett. Everett signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers, meaning Gerald Everett is returning to Sofi Stadium in 2022, but this time as a Charger.

The Los Angeles Rams get a left tackle for depth behind Joseph Noteboom in the wake of Andrew Whitworth retiring. Matt Waletzko's film wasn't impressive, but he impressed at the Senior Bowl, NFL Combine, and North Dakota's Pro Day. The Rams can gamble on him here.

  33. Los Angeles Rams: Derrick Deese Jr., TE, San Jose State

The Los Angeles Rams got this compensation pick at 212 for losing their 2017 fourth round pick Samson Ekubam, who left Los Angeles to sign a contract with the NFC West arch rival San Francisco 49ers. The former Hokie kept his roster spot on San Francisco after filling in for an injured Dee Ford in 2021.

The Los Angeles Rams get a tight end that can push Brycen Hopkins for the backup tight end job behind Tyler Higbee. Derrick Deese Jr. has good game film and may be worth a flyer here.

  34. Atlanta Falcons: Dare Rosenthal, LT, Kentucky

The Atlanta Falcons got this compensation pick at 213 for losing their Pro Bowl center Alex Mack. Mack left Atlanta to sign with San Francisco, but Atlanta now has a good center in Matt Hennessy.

Dare Rosenthal is a backup left tackle to Jake Matthews. He's nothing more or nothing less, but a solid backup.

  35. Los Angeles Chargers: Jeremiah Moon, 3-4 LOLB, Florida

The Los Angeles Chargers got this compensation pick at 214 after former starter Tyrod Taylor lost the quarterback job to Justin Herbert. Tyrod Taylor got one more chance as a starter in Houston. Tyrod Taylor won a Super Bowl as a backup to Joe Flacco before having starting quarterback gigs in Buffalo, Cleveland, Los Angeles, and Houston. He is now a backup once again in New York.

The Chargers get depth at edge rusher behind Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack. Jeremiah Moon can be a solid depth player at 3-4 outside linebacker.

  36. Arizona Cardinals: Eric Johnson, 3-4 RE, Missouri State

The Arizona Cardinals got this compensation pick at 215 after former complimentary running back Kenyan Drake left the Arizona Cardinals to sign with the Las Vegas Raiders.

J.J. Watt and Zach Allen are effective at 3-4 right end and 3-4 left end. The problem is Arizona has no depth behind J.J. Watt.

  37. Indianapolis Colts: Zamir White, RB, Georgia

The Indianapolis Colts got this compensation pick at 216 after Jacoby Brissett signed a one year deal to be a backup quarterback to Tua Tagovailoa. Brissett showed promise as a backup in week 3 against the Las Vegas Raiders before his season with Miami went downhill from there. Cleveland signed Jacoby Brissett who will be a backup to Deshaun Watson unless Baker Mayfield remains in Cleveland as the backup which would relegate Brissett to a third string role.

The Indianapolis Colts get a running back for depth behind Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines. Zamir White makes a lot of sense here.

  38. Detroit Lions: Dameon Pierce, RB, Florida

The Detroit Lions got this compensation pick at 217 for losing their 2017 first round pick Jarrad Davis who signed a contract with the New York Jets. New York released Davis to clear up cap space, and Detroit got him back on a one year deal for the 2022 season after aquiring this compensation pick.

Detroit gets a running back for depth here. Cutting Jamaal Williams saves $3-million in cap space. Detroit would have a 23-year-old D'Andre Swift, a 22-year-old Jermar Jefferson their 2021 seventh round pick, and Florida running back Dameon Pierce for depth with this pick Williams salary pays for the entirety of this contract with Williams being 27-years-old.

  39. Los Angeles Rams: E.J. Perry, QB, Brown

The Los Angeles Rams got this compensation pick at 218 for losing cornerback Troy Hill to the Cleveland Browns. Troy Hill led the NFL with defensive tochdowns in 2020 in his final season with the Rams prior to signing a contract with the Cleveland Browns.

The Rams have Matthew Stafford as their starter and John Wolford as their backup who started for the Rams in their wild card win over Seattle before Jared Goff started the following game at Green Bay back in 2020. E.J. Perry gives the Rams a better third string option than Bryce Hopkins the former Virginia Cavaliers quarterback that went undrafted in 2020.

  40. Tennessee Titans: Noah Elliss, NT, Idaho

The Tennessee Titans got this compensation pick at 219 for losing their 2014 fourth round pick DaQuan Jones after the Penn State defensive tackle made it through his rookie contract and first extension with the Tennessee Titans. DaQuan Jones only lasted one season in Carolina. He's now a backup defensive tackle on the Buffalo Bills for the 2022 NFL Season.

The Tennessee Titans add a nose tackle for depth. Noah Elliss the son of Luther Ellis has a chance to win the starting nose tackle job for Tennessee with Teair Tart and Naquan Jones as his competition.

  41. San Francisco 49ers: D'vonte Price, RB, Florida International

The San Francisco 49ers get this compensation pick at 220 because San Francisco 49ers defensive end Solomon Thomas, the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft signed a contract with the Las Vegas Raiders after he lost his starting job to Nick Bosa. Thomas managed to play through all four years of his rookie deal though. After a year with the Raiders playing inside at defensive tackle, Thomas signed a depth role with the New York Jets at defensive tackle on a one year deal.

The San Francisco 49ers have Elijah Mitchell, JaMychal Hasty, and Trey Sermon at running back. D'vonte Price gives San Francisco one more running back for depth to go with that trio.

  42. San Francisco 49ers: Isaiah Weston, WR, Northern Iowa

The San Francisco 49ers get this compensation pick at 221 because backup defensive end Kerry Hyder had a career high 8.5 sacks when Nick Bosa got placed on the season ending injured reserve list. Ryder had 2 sacks and a fumble recovery in a Monday Night win over Jared Goff an the Los Angeleles Rams back in 2020. Seattle got him for a year, before San Francisco brought him back for the 2022 season.

San Francisco finally gets a wide receiver depth. With rumors about trading Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk surfacing, it's likely that San Francisco drafts a wide receiver at some point.
