2016 NHL Mock Draft: Final Mock 7 Rounds

Round 5

Posted By: Chris Ransom Last Updated: June 24, 2016.

  1. Toronto Maple Leafs: Hugo Danielson, D, Skelleftea AIK (Eliteserien)

Toronto grabs one more defenseman for depth. Some think Hugo Danielson could go in the fourth round.

  2. Edmonton Oilers: Tyler Steenbergen, LW, Swift Current Broncos (WHL)

Edmonton grabs the best player available. Tyler Steenbergen had 20 goals, 26 assists, and 46 points in 2015-2016 with the Swift Current Broncos.

  3. Montreal Canadiens: Matthew Cairns, D, Georgetown Raiders (OJHL)

Montreal takes the best player available. At this point that player is Matthew Cairns.

  4. St. Louis Blues: Ben Gleason, D, London Knights (OHL)

St. Louis adds another defenseman for depth. Ben Gleason is the top skater available in the fifth round.

  5. Calgary Flames: Mikail Hakkarainen, LW, Brookings Blizzard (NAHL)

Mikail Hakkarainen is the top skater left. He makes sense for Calgary in the fifth round.

  6. Winnipeg Jets: Jeffery deWitt, C, Red Deer Rebels (WHL)

Jeffery deWitt is still a project. He may do well in the AHL, but its unlikely he cracks an NHL roster.

  7. Dallas Stars: Lee Roberts, RW, Lausanne HC (National League A)

The Stars grab a winger for depth. Lee Roberts has the versatility to play both left wing and right wing in the NHL.

  8. Buffalo Sabres: Daniel Marmenlind, G, Orebro HK (Elitserien)

Buffalo gets a project goalie to develop. The 6-1 192 lb Daniel Marmenlind has above average size for a goalie.

  9. Buffalo Sabres: Jordan Topping, LW, Tri-City Americans (WHL)

Buffalo adds a winger for depth Jordan Topping is the top winger for depth available at this point.

  10. Colorado Avalanche: Keenan Suthers, RW, United States National Team Developmental Program (USHL)

Colorado grabs a right winger for depth in the fifth round. Keenan Suthers weighs 6-7 220 lbs. Suthers can be a steal if he develops his offensive game at the next level.

  11. New Jersey Devils: David Bernhardt, D, Djurgardens IF (Elitserien)

The 6-3 191 lb David Bernhardt gives New Jersey another defender for depth. Bernhardt would make a quick transition to the AHL giving the Devils a long-term developmental defenseman.

  12. Ottawa Senators: Eetu Tuulola, RW, HPK (SM Liiga)

Ottawa grabs a winger for depth. Eetu Tuulola has the versatility to play left wing and right wing in the NHL.

  13. Carolina Hurricanes: Jiri Karafiat, RW, PSG Zlin (Extraliga)

Carolina gets another winger. Jiri Karafiat could be a guy that gets called up to the Charlotte Checkers in the AHL pretty quickly.

  14. Boston Bruins: Brody Wilms, C, Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL)

Boston adds a center for depth. Brody Wilms needs more time in the WHL, but could be a solid back 6 center on Providence in the AHL.

  15. Boston Bruins: Mitch Elliott, LW, Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL)

Boston adds the 6-4 215 lb Mitch Elliott. Elliott has gotten more exposure with the Seattle Thunderbirds in 2016.

  16. Detroit Red Wings: Linus Weissbach, LW, Frolunda Indians (Elitserien)

Detroit adds a winger here. Linus Weissbach helped Frolunda win the Elitserien Championship against Skelleftea AIK.

  17. Nashville Predators: Luke McGinnis, D, Youngstown Phantoms (USHL)

Nashville gets another defenseman in the fifth round. Luke McGinnis is the top defenseman left at this point.

  18. Philadelphia Flyers: Hudson Elynuik, C, Spokane Chiefs (WHL)

Philadelphia drafts the best available player in the fifth round. Hudson Elynuik is a great value pick here.

  19. Vancouver Canucks: Oskar Steen, C, Farjestads B.K. (Elitserien)

Oskar Steen would be a good playmaker to add for depth. He got to learn behind Joel Ek Eriksson as a line 2 center on Farjestads B.K.

  20. New York Rangers: Sam Rossini, D, Waterloo Blackhawks (USHL)

Sam Rossini gives the Rangers a great defenseman for depth. Rossini could develop into a future line 3 defensemen in the NHL, but he will be at least a five year project.

  21. Los Angeles Kings: Markus Nurmi, RW, TPS (SM Liiga)

Markus Nurmi has the versatility to play both left wing and right wing in the NHL. Grabbing a versatile winger is something the Los Angeles Kings need to do in the fifth round.

  22. Chicago Blackhawks: Joseph Masonius, D, Connecticut

Joseph Masonius had 6 goals, 15 assists, and 21 points in 2015-2016. He has ability to be an offensive defenseman, but he needs to keep perfecting his defensive game on the blue line at Connecticut.

  23. Chicago Blackhawks: Adam Brizgala, G, HC Sparta Praha (Extraliga)

Adam Brizgala is a project goalie. He could be a solid backup for Chicago in a few years once Scott Darling succeeds Corey Crawford.

  24. Washington Capitals: Evan Sarthou, G, Tri-City Americans (WHL)

Evan Sarthou has athleticism that shows flashes of Marc Andre-Fleury. His save percentage is below .900 and Sarthou is a project. Washington is loaded with goalies, in the NHL, AHL, as well as spending a 2015 first round pick on a goalie. Despite this, Washington takes Sarthou since he's the best overall player on the board late in the fifth round.

  25. Dallas Stars: Jacob Neveu, D, Rouyn-Noranda Huskies (QMJHL)

The 6-2 205 lb Jacob Neveu had 2 goals, 14 assists, 16 points, and a +20 +/- ratio in 2015-2016. Neveu has the size and awareness to be an excellent defensive defenseman in the AHL. If Neveu can develop his offensive game he has a shot of cracking the NHL as a two-way defender.

  26. Washington Capitals: Thomas Sustal, C, Kelowna Rockets (WHL)

Washington drafts a unique center with the work ethic and stick handling that teams covet. Kelowna has a pipeline of NHL centers in place and Sustal is the next center in line.

  27. Tampa Bay Lightning: Garrett Pilon, C, Kamloops Blazers (WHL)

The son of Rich Pilon joins Tampa Bay. Garrett Pilon had 15 goals, 32 assists, and 47 points in 71 games. He needs to keep developing in the WHL before joining the AHL.

  28. Edmonton Oilers: Samuel Laberge, D, Rimouski Oceanic (QMJHL)

The 6-2 205 lb Samuel Laberge had 26 points in 2014-2015. He nearly doubled that total this season with 48 points in 2015-2016. Edmonton should add Laberge here if he's still available.

  29. San Jose Sharks: Casey Fitzgerald, D, Boston College

Casey Fitzgerald was a top 100 prospect that went undrafted in 2015. He had 4 goals, 23 assists, 27 points, and a +27 +/- ratio in his first season at Boston College. Adding Fitzgerald as a project defenseman for San Jose wouldn't be a bad idea. Fitzgerald currently weighs 5-11 185 lbs, but he can bulk up at Boston College. Worst case scenario Fitzgerald develops into a solid role player on the San Jose Barracuda, but I can see Fitzgerald in the NHL.

  30. Pittsburgh Penguins: Mathieu Sevigny, LW, Drummondville Voltigeurs (QMJHL)

Pittsburgh wraps up the fifth round with Mathieu Sevigny. The Pittsburgh Penguins draft the son of Pierre Sevigny here.
