Chris Ransom grades the Arizona Cardinals 2015 NFL Draft. Does Arizona have a bright future after drafting two SEC players with their first two draft picks in the 2015 NFL Draft?
24. D.J. Humphries, RT, Florida A+ Grade
Arizona made a good choice and nabbed a starting right tackle with this pick. Daniel Jeremiah had Humphries as his top ranked offensive tackle in the entire NFL Draft, so to get a guy like that at 24 simply is surreal.
58. Markus Golden, 3-4 LOLB, Missouri A- Grade
Markus Golden is listed as a backup behind 2013 fourth round pick Alex Okafor. Golden should push Okafor for that job and add depth at 3-4 left outside linebacker. When Woodley retires Okafor will move to 3-4 right outside linebacker because Golden is a natural 3-4 left outside linebacker.
Golden gives you a good depth player. You can wait until Woodley retires or have him challenge Okafor for the job across from Woodley which is why I really like this pick.
In 2014 next to Ray at Missouri, Golden had 78 total tackles, 20 tackles for a loss, and 10 sacks. It would not surprise me if Golden started before Ray which is why this pick got an A- grade.
86. David Johnson, RB, Northern Iowa A Grade
Arizona needed a backup to Andre Ellington. Right now, David Johnson is listed as the #2 running back on this depth chart.
David Johnson had 1,625 rushing yards and 17 rushing touchdowns in 2014. Johnson had 1,679 rushing yards as a junior in 2013. This is a consistent running back that will help you win which is why this pick got an A grade.
116. Rodney Gunter, 3-4 RE, Delaware State A+ Grade
Rodney Gunter has been phenomenal in OTA's. There's talk that he will beat out both Cory Redding and Frostee Rucker for the starting 3-4 right end role which illustrates the genius of the Cardinals scouting department because nobody else had Gunter on their big boards.
Gunter can fill Darnell Dockett's spot with Calias Campbell playing next to him at 3-4 left end. Now Rucker is your backup 3-4 right end with Redding being a 3-4 left end that can be used as a backup. You may have lost nose tackle Dan Williams, but now you got tremendous depth at 3-4 defensive end at 5 technique after Dockett's departure.
158. Shaquille Riddick, 3-4 ROLB, West Virginia D Grade
Shaquille Riddick has yet to adjust to a 3-4 defense. He was a 4-3 guy his entire career even though he lined up at outside linebacker as well as defensive end at West Virginia. Riddick is listed as a third string right outside linebacker on West Virginia and is a poor mans Bruce Irvin.
159. J.J. Nelson, WR, UAB B Grade
J.J. Nelson was one of the best return specialists in College Football. Arizona believes Nelson will start right away on special teams as both a kick returner and a punt returner. If that's the case than this is an awesome pick.
256. Gerald Christian, TE, Louisville C Grade
Gerald Christian is listed as a third string tight end on the Cardinals. There were better players available, but this is still a quality pick. I just find it ironic that a former Cardinal on the Louisville Cardinals gets to be a Cardinal once again on the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL. That's the pick that's Mr. Irrelevant because I find the fact that both schools having the nickname Cardinals in them is extremely relevant.
Arizona Cardinals Team Grade: B+ Grade
This was a fantastic draft for the Cardinals early on as they got premium value with their first 4 picks. Those four players are all future starters on the Cardinals. I thought the Cardinals whiffed their final 3 picks which is what bumped this down to an A-, but when you consider the fact that the Cardinals ignored nose tackle and a #2 cornerback in the 2015 NFL Draft as well, this pick gets bumped down to a B+ grade.
