Chris Ransom grades the Carolina Panthers 2015 NFL Draft. Do the Panthers have a bright future after drafting Shaq Thompson with the twenty-fifth pick in the draft?
25. Shaq Thompson, LOLB, Washington F Grade
Shaq Thompson will dominate next to Thomas Davis and Luke Kuechly. My main reason for giving this an F grade is because they passed on an offensive tackle with this selection. Offensive tackle, was the Panthers biggest need and they failed to address that.
41. Devin Funchess, TE, Michigan F Grade
Devin Funchess was more productive as a tight end at Michigan. It's pretty scary that he will be the #2 wide receiver across from Kelvin Benjamin. I think Funchess would have done well as a tight end, but I think he will bust as a wide receiver.
Carolina could have taken Jake Fisher, T.J. Clemmings, or Jaelen Strong, but they passed on those guys for Devin Funchess which was my main reason for devaluing this pick.
102. Daryl Williams, RG, Oklahoma D Grade
Williams played right tackle at Oklahoma. Now he will move inside to right guard as a backup right guard hoping to transition to the NFL.
169. David Mayo, MLB, Texas State F Grade
David Mayo is a third string middle linebacker in Carolina. That's why his pick got an F grade.
Losing both Dwight Freeney and Jarrett Johnson was a huge blow. Something about Kyle Emmanuel reminds me of Jarrett Johnson. Some don't like this pick, but Emmanuel might be the only steal the Chargers added in this draft following the first two rounds of the 2015 NFL Draft.
174. Cameron Artis-Payne, RB, Auburn B Grade
Carolina could use a #2 running back behind Jonathan Stewart. Artis-Payne is a #2 running back so this pick makes a ton of sense.
Carolina Panthers Team Grade: F Grade
Carolina has an even deadlier linebacking core with Shaq Thompson joining Thomas Davis and Luke Kuechly. It's safe to say that the Panthers have the best linebacking core in the NFL.
I think Carolina should have targeted an offensive tackle or a wide receiver in the first round. While Devin Funchess is talented, he's not a guy you give up nearly half of your draft picks for. Carolina had a horrible NFL Draft in 2015.
