Detroit Lions 2015 NFL Draft Grades

Chris Ransom grades the Detroit Lions 2015 NFL Draft. Does Detroit have a bright future after trading down for Laken Tomlinson?

28. Laken Tomlinson, LG, Duke A Grade

Detroit had one quality starter on their interior offensive line in Larry Warford at right guard. Thanks to the trade with Denver where the Lions moved down to 28, they filled both needs at left guard and center. Former Lion and Denver Broncos center Manny Ramirez was shipped to Detroit in that trade as well before the Lions secured left guard Laken Tomlinson who dominated the Senior Bowl.

Tomlinson looks like a sure fire starter at left guard. Playing on a strong interior offensive line will make him better as well.

54. Ameer Abdullah, RB, Nebraska A Grade

I thought there were better running backs available. I still believe Abdullah is capable of starting so this isn't a bad pick. Detroit never had an interior offensive line when drafting in the past. Abdullah will play at a high level with Tomlinson, Ramirez, and Warford blocking up front.

Abdullah only needed 7 games to reach 1,000 rushing yards at Nebraska in 2014. Abdullah ran a 4.61 40 time at the 2015 NFL Combine, but he ran a 4.41 40 time at his Pro Day weighing in at 5-10 198 lbs.

When Abdullah ran for 100 rushing yards, Nebraska was 7-0. When Abdullah failed to rush for 100 yards, the Cornhuskers were 2-4 in 6 games.

80. Alex Carter, CB, Stanford A Grade

Alex Carter is an excellent cover corner. He can start right away. By next season Carter will be the #1 overall cornerback on the Lions' depth chart.

116. Gabe Wright, DT, Auburn A+ Grade

Nick Fairley went to Auburn. Detroit never replaced Fairley even though the Lions brought in Haloti Ngata to fill the void that Ndamukong Suh left. With the Lions remaining in a 4-3 defense, I love the idea of Ngata and Wright pairing up next to each other.

168. Michael Burton, FB, Rutgers A Grade

Michael Burton has potential to be a starting fullback which Detroit needs. Not only can this guy run, but he displays outstanding ball carrier vision. He's better at catching the ball out of the backfield than any other fullback in the draft. If he struggles as a starter you can move him to special teams where he will make an immediate impact as a blocker on 4th down situations.

200. Quandre Diggs, CB, Texas A Grade

Quandre Diggs was a nickel corner at Texas. With the Lions he can start out as a dime cornerback role and eventually work into the nickel.

240. Corey Robinson, RT, South Carolina A Grade

Corey Robinson has the ability to make an immediate impact at right tackle in the NFL. He played left tackle at South Carolina, but has the versatility and size of a right tackle. He run blocks like a right tackle and Robinson has the footwork of a right tackle as well. Detroit needed someone across from Reiff and to get Robinson in the seventh round is simply phenomenal value.

Detroit Lions Team Grade: A Grade

Detroit had an awesome draft and addressed all of their needs. This interior offensive line with Tomlinson and Ramirez will open up the running game which Detroit has lacked for so many years. If the Lions' can get off to a good start like they did last year they will get in the playoffs. All the Lions have to do is win one game in the 2016 NFL Playoffs, then Matthew Stafford will develop confidence in his teammates, and the Lions will go on a roar of a run to win the NFC.

There isn't enough talent for Detroit to win the Super Bowl. I do believe Detroit has a chance to get to San Francisco if they draw the right opponents and show the ability to make an immediate first impression like winning a wild card game on the road.

Detroit filled all of their needs in the draft. Now the Lions are hungry since none of their players have gotten past the wild card round. Aaron Rodgers was 27-years-old when he had no playoff wins and then went on that run to Dallas where the Packers won the Super Bowl as a wild card because they built through the draft and addressed every single need. I could see Detroit getting to the big game just like Green Bay did now that they filled every need as well, but losing to an AFC Squad since Stafford is currently 27 as well. As much as I loved Detroit's draft, I just cannot see the Lions beating the Colts, Ravens, or Patriots to win a Super Bowl assuming they even got there.
