HOUSTON-Jadeveon Clowney made his preseason debut at Reliant Stadium on Saturday Night. Jadeveon got straight to business. There was no Clowneying around. I know that pun sucked. The pun was about as entertaining as Houston’s passing game at the quarterback position.

All kidding aside Clowney looked like a beast. He showed flashes of Derrick Thomas in a meaningless exhibition game. The former Gamecock made a statement by abusing Sam Baker until he left the game with an injury. Clowney had his way with Falcons’ quarterback Matt Ryan while disabling the running game completely by preventing any of the Falcons’ running backs from crossing the line of scrimmage.

The Texans may not have a quarterback. That doesn’t mean Clowney is going to bend over without competing for the defensive rookie of the year award. Clowney has demonstrated superb NFL ability throughout rookie minicamps, OTAs, and training camps. He seems to answered the question scouts had about his work ethic prior to the draft.

One more thing I would like to add is that Jadeveon Clowney is only as good as his defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel. It is a good thing Houston has Crennel and that Bill O’Brien has orchestrated some coverage schemes to help Clowney prepare to cover in rare situations where teams will throw the deep ball in 4 WR sets. Most of the time, expect Clowney to attack the line of scrimmage like Bobby Boucher.
