Gwen Doughty grades the Indianapolis Colts 2016 NFL Draft. Does Indianapolis have a bright future after drafting Ryan Kelly with the eighteenth pick in the 2016 NFL Draft?
18. Ryan Kelly, C, Alabama A Grade
The Colts needed an immediate starter on the offensive line. Ryan Kelly gives the Colts an immediate starter at center. I still feel like the Colts need a right tackle though, which is why this pick got an A grade instead of an A+ grade.
57. T.J. Green, FS, Clemson A- Grade
T.J. Green is an intense competition with Clayton Geathers a 2015 third round pick for the Colts starting free safety job. Expect the competition between Geathers and Green to drag out into Colts Training Camp.
82. Le'Raven Clark, LT, Texas Tech B+ Grade
Le'Raven Clark is versatile enough to play left tackle, right tackle, left guard, or right guard. Clark does not like putting his hand in the dirt so making him a backup to Anthony Costanzo at left tackle is the perfect role for Clark during his rookie season.
116. Hassan Ridgeway, 3-4 RE, Texas B Grade
Hassan Ridgeway was versatile enough to play anywhere on the Colts 3-4 defensive line at 3-4 right end, 3-4 nose tackle, or 3-4 left end. Ridgeway is competing with T.Y. McGill for the right to be the backup 3-4 right end to Arthur Jones. I like Ridgeway in that contest against McGill so this pick gets a solid B grade.
125. Antonio Morrison, 3-4 MLB, Florida A- Grade
Antonio Morrison may only be a rookie. He's already pushing Nate Irving for the starting 3-4 middle linebacker job across from D'Qwell Jackson. When Morrison finally starts, the tackling on this defense will improve.
155. Joe Haeg, RT, North Dakota State B+ Grade
Joe Haeg is expected to push Denzelle Good for the starting right tackle job. I think Good will start out as the right tackle after having some success last year at 6-3 340 lbs. Haeg could eventually replace him though so tthis gets a B+ grade.
239. Trevor Bates, 3-4 LOLB, Maine F Grade
There were better pass rushers available. Trevor Bates is a third string 3-4 left outside linebacker and this is a pick I don't understand.
248. Austin Blythe, C, Iowa B Grade
Austin Blythe was a good backup center to add to the Colts behind first round pick Ryan Kelly. This pick gets a solid B grade.
Indianapolis Colts Team Grade: B Grade
Overall this was a solid draft for the Colts. Ryan Grigson put together an awesome draft for the Colts in 2012. His last three drafts have been terrible though overall from 2013-2015. If he cannot right the ship in 2016, it may be the end for Grigson as the Colts GM.
