Chris Ransom grades the Kansas City Chiefs 2015 NFL Draft. Does Kansas City have a bright future after drafting Marcus Peters with the eighteenth pick in the 2015 NFL Draft?
18. Marcus Peters, CB, Washington A Grade
Marcus Peters is the best cover corner in this draft outside of Trae Waynes. The Chiefs needed to replace Brandon Flowers.
One thing to understand is that drafting Peters is a boom or bust pick. You could be getting Pacman Jones or you could be getting another Champ Bailey. I think the Chiefs are more likely to see a cornerback that resembles Champ Bailey which is why I love this pick.
49. Mitch Morse, C, Missouri A- Grade
Mitch Morse has the versatility to play anywhere on the offensive line at left tackle, left guard, center, right guard, or right tackle. Kansas City had better insight on Morse than any other team.
Hroniss Grasu had a knee injury leading up to the draft. Not just that, the Chiefs brought in Morse for an individual workout after he visited Missouri's Pro Day.
When a local team like the Chiefs thinks this highly of Morse you cannot question this selection. Especially when you consider Andy Reid's track record of developing quality offensive linemen into account. I knew Kanas City liked Morse when I did my Pro Day write ups and I feel foolish for not recognizing the possibility of the Chiefs taking Morse because they were looking at other small school guys at center as well.
Mitch Morse is projected to be the week 1 starter at center. That's why the Chiefs got an A- grade here.
76. Chris Conley, WR, Georgia B Grade
I wasn't a fan of Chris Conley, but Michael Harris mocked him to the Chiefs in round 2 of our 2015 NFL Group Mock. I was wrong about Conley though because he's currently projected to start next to Jeremy Maclin.
I felt like there were better receivers available, but to get Conley at this point in round 3 is good value. This pick gets a solid B grade.
98. Steven Nelson, CB, Oregon State A+ Grade
Steven Nelson is an awesome boundary cornerback. He should have been gone by this pick, but the Chiefs got an awesome value pick and pair Nelson up next to Marcus Peters.
118. Ramik Wilson, 3-4 MLB, Georgia A+ Grade
It would have been smart for the Chiefs to take Ramik Wilson at 76. To get Wilson here in the fourth round is an absolute steal because he's durable and can get you 100 tackles on a yearly basis. Wilson will start right away next to 3-4 middle linebacker Derrick Johnson on the inside and on the outside next to Wilson will be former Georgia Bulldog Justin Houston.
172. D.J. Alexander, 3-4 LOLB, Oregon State B+ Grade
D.J. Alexander has the versatility to play in any role at linebacker. He can play any linebacker role in the 4-3 or the 3-4 defense. The only other linebacker in the draft with that skill is Shaq Thompson so that's why this is an outstanding pick.
Dee Ford the Chiefs 2014 first round pick is most likely a successor for Tamba Hali. If you wanted a guy to develop behind Justin Houston, then D.J. Alexander is your man. Alexander could also step in if Derrick Johnson suffered another injury at 3-4 middle linebacker which is why I really like this pick.
173. James O'Shaughnessy, TE, Illinois State B- Grade
James O'Shaughnessy impressed at Illinois State's Pro Day. I like the idea of having him as a #2 tight end behind Travis Kelce.
217. Rakeem Nunez-Roches, 3-4 LE, Southern Miss A+ Grade
Kansas City needed another 5 technique guy with Alvin Bailey making the transition from 3-4 left end to 3-4 right end. Rakeem Nunez-Roches can be that guy with the Chiefs.
233. Da'Ron Brown, WR, Northern Illinois A+ Grade
Da'Ron Brown was the top player left. Brown had a huge game against Miami Ohio picking apart both of their cornerbacks making second round pick Quentin Rollins look silly. Brown is projected to beat out Jason Avant for the slot receiver role, and the best part is the Chiefs got Brown in the seventh round.
Kansas City Chiefs Team Grade: A Grade
Kansas City deserves major props for drafting two starting wide receivers. Some would have criticized the choice to pass on a wide receiver that fell to the fourth round. I don't think you can do that when you consider that both Chris Conley and Da'Ron Brown are projected to be #2 and #3 receivers on the depth chart at this point. Brown has been so productive in Chiefs' rookie minicamp that I could see him coming in as a #2 receiver next to Maclin on some plays. It's too early to buy into anything until we see what Kansas City does on Sunday's, but I see a lot of promise from the Chiefs so far.
Kansas City had a strong draft finding starters at nearly every position of need. I think they may have did enough to challenge possibly unseat the Broncos in the AFC West. The Chiefs will have an easier schedule this season then the Broncos or the Chargers, and something tells me Kansas City is hungrier with a lot of their star players playing on one-year contracts.
Long term Kansas City may have to rebuild. Short term there's enough talent this season for Kansas City to challenge Denver for the AFC West. At the end of the day it will come down to whether Alex Smith reverts to his 2013 form and whether Peyton Manning declines in 2015. That's the variable that will ultimately decide the AFC West. Either way, I think the Chiefs have a great shot to make the 2016 NFL Playoffs.
