2016 NFL Mock Draft: 7 Rounds

Round 1 Picks 1-16

Mark Sciubba posts his first 7 round mock draft for the 2016 NFL Draft.

Mark Sciubba Last Updated: April 22, 2016.

  1. Los Angeles Rams: Jared Goff, QB, California

The Rams' pulled off the trade of the year to get this selection. For two years now they have looked like a team a Quarterback away. Now they can get the very best one in the draft and start this new Los Angeles era with what could potentially be their franchise QB. Goff might not be ready to start right away but with enough time and right coaching he should have Los Angeles competing for the playoffs every year.

  2. Philadelphia Eagles: Carson Wentz, QB, North Dakota State

After the joy that was the Chip Kelly experiment in Philly it's time to get back to basics. They've already had a great start with the coaching staff they've put together, and some of the Free agent signings they made. The next step is to replenish the talent on this roster the Chipster got rid of like a 15 year old playing Madden. The best way is to go best player available through the draft. In the Eagles mind finding a young QB to be their Franchise. Wentz should struggle to begin his career for various reasons. My main concern which I don't see many discussing, is that he essentially played at the Alabama of the FCS. Not only was he not playing top level competition, but his team was stacked with talent that gave him a significant advantage. With enough patience, he should become a quality starter in the NFL. I don't think the trade was worth it for Philadelphia though.

  3. San Diego Chargers: Jalen Ramsey, SS, Florida State

Last year the Chargers selected what are they hoping will be Phillip Rivers new best friend in Melvin Gordon. You know what’s as much, if not even more helpful to a QB trying to get his first Super Bowl ring than a strong run game? A dominant turnover causing defense who doesn't give up the big plays. The departure of Eric Weddle makes a giant hole in an already leaky defense, but picking Jalen Ramsey right here plugs that hole and then some. With Jason Verrett, Brandon Flowers, and Jalen Ramsey in your secondary, you're causing problems for every team in the NFL's pass game, and greatly helping out your pass rush. Look for a possible trade up here by the Jaguars or Dolphins if Ramsey doesn't go in the first 2 picks.

  4. Dallas Cowboys: Joey Bosa, RE, Ohio State

I'm sure Jerry Jones will be pitching a QB here and he might get one. I think cooler heads prevail the way they did in the 2014 draft though. Getting what might be the best player in the entire draft, and building block for the Cowboys' defense will help the Cowboys get back on top and stay there. Building through the trenches is what has worked for the Cowboys and they stick with that philosophy here. This is another spot I could see a trade up happening, if it does happen look for the Cowboys to move back just far enough to still land Ezekiel Elliot from Ohio State.

  5. Jacksonville Jaguars: Myles Jack, LOLB, UCLA

Gus Bradley might be the absolute perfect coach for Myles Jack. The versatile UCLA LB with elite athleticism, has to have many defensive minds in the NFL mouth’s watering. Getting back last years first round pick Dante Fowler Jr. and adding Jack, along with the money they've spent in Free Agency, should have the Jacksonville D playing like one of the most improved units in the league.

  6. Baltimore Ravens: Laremy Tunsil, LT, Ole Miss

Other than the Rams and Titans the main beneficiary of the blockbuster trade is whoever ends up with Tunsil now. I personally think Tunsil is a little overrated and struggles handling speed. Still he’s probably the best LT in the draft, and Ozzie Newsome is too smart to pass him up. He can come in and make Joe Flacco’s life that much easier. Having a left tackle like Tunsil just helps the entire offense run better.

  7. San Francisco 49ers: DeForest Buckner, 3-4 RE, Oregon

The 49ers would love to trade down here for a team who needs a QB. As much as I and many others think the 49ers need a franchise QB, GM Trent Baalke and HC Chip Kelly seem content with what they already have and doing what it takes to get Connor Cook in the end of the 1st round, or beginning of the 2nd. The 49ers seem to have gone a team with no hole to the point they were taking guys with dreams of redshirting them and staying on top of the NFL for years, to a team that needs all the help they can get. Deforest Buckner is a special talent, and can come in and improve your defensive line as a whole day one. He’s the prototypical 3-4 Defensive End and plays like it too. Having Buckner re-unite with former teammate DeForest Buckner gives the 49ers' two 3-4 defensive ends that can start for the next decade in San Francisco.

  8. Cleveland Browns: Ezekiel Elliott, RB, Ohio State

The Browns' must start to build and offense with some serious playmakers. If there really taking the analytics seriously Elliot is the perfect fit. A RB who can score from anywhere on the field and can help out in the passing game. Elliot is one of the top playmakers in this draft and Browns probably have the least playmakers in the NFL. If RG3 really is their guy then Elliot can be his best friend and make life much easier for him.

  9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Vernon Hargreaves III, CB, Florida

This is it. The big test of decision making in the Jameis Winston era. The Bucs can either spend early picks adding even more offensive talent for their new franchise QB, and fail miserably like Ryan Grisgon of the Colts have like so many GMs before him that buy into this philosophy. Or maybe the Bucs just might to the right thing, realize Winston has tons of talent to work and grow with already and build up that defense that's gonna get this team to the playoffs and help Jameis get the team where they wanna be. Defense wins Championships. Lets hope for Winston and Buc fans everywhere, the GM realizes this so they don't end up like Luck and the Colts whose GM has failed them miserably. I have a very defensive draft theme in mind for the Bucs.

  10. New York Giants: Ronnie Stanley, LT, Notre Dame

The Giants' massive Defensive free agency spending has freed them up to take a BPA approach. Getting Ronnie Stanley at 10 is a great pick, and something most would of thought not possible when this process started. Stanley should provide a franchise LT, and personal body guard for not just Eli Manning but the QB they move onto once Manning retires or moves on as well. Adding Stanley also allows Ereck Flowers, the ninth pick in last years draft to move over to RT which is probably a better fit for him. If Stanley is still around at 10 expect the Giants phone to be ringing off the hook.

  11. Chicago Bears: Shaq Lawson, 3-4 ROLB, Clemson

Other than than the New Orleans Saints no team needs more defensive help than the Bears. Shaq Lawson will come in day one and greatly improve the pass rush. He’s also athletic enough for DC Vic Fangio to get creative with and move him around like a chess piece.

  12. New Orleans Saints: A'Shawn Robinson, DT, Alabama

The Saints had the worst defense in the league in 2015. They have guys with potential but for Drew Brees to have any chance at another Super Bowl before he retires, they need to do everything they can to build that defense. Taking this monster DT from Bama is the perfect pick for the Saints. He'll step in day one and be one of the best players on the defense. One player will not fix the problem the Saints have on D, but getting A'Shawn Robinson here is one hell of a start.

  13. Miami Dolphins: Mackensie Alexander, CB, Clemson

The Dolphins secondary was a liability even before losing Brent Grimes, with Byron Maxwell projected as their number 1 corner headed into training camp they need as much help as they can get at corner. Way too much has been made of Alexander's lack of interceptions. Guys like Ronald Darby last year has shown that your interception total in college isn't what shows your ability to play at the pro level. Other than the lack of turnovers and being under 6 foot, Alexander is everything you look for in an NFL CB prospect. Fast, Confident, and he doesn't give up the big play.

  14. Oakland Raiders: Eli Apple, CB, Ohio State

The Oakland Raiders have done a tremendous job in the past few drafts and as a result are on the cusp of something special. With Mack, Carr, and Cooper, the Raiders have one of the best young nucleus in the league. With the signing of Sean Smith, the Raider's have already greatly improved on their biggest weakness but to be successful in the NFL you need more than one quality corner, and Eli Apple has all the tools to develop into something special. If Reggie Mckenzie keeps knocking drafts out of the park like he has been the Raiders will be a constant contender in no time.

  15. Tennessee Titans: Jack Conklin, LT, Michigan State

Coach Mike Mularkey has made it clear protecting Marcus Mariota is a top priority for his team. Between the drafting of Warmack and Lewan and the signing of once prized FA Andy Letrive one would think the Titans' Offensive line woes would be a thing of the past. After the thrashing the number 2 pick of the 2015 draft took last year that’s clearly not the case. Titans get a plug and play tackle in Conklin and two bookends for years to come with Lewan protecting Mariota's right side. This pick could elevate the Titan's line to finally reach their potential and turn them into a dominant position group.

  16. Detroit Lions: Sheldon Rankins, DT, Louisville

After losing the heart and soul of their defense last year to free agency, and losing the heart and soul of their offense to retirement this year GM Bob Quinn has his work cut out for him. I believe one of the Lion’s top priorities has to be getting someone on the line to help Ansah get after the QB. Ansah is a very special player, and with getting a DT like Rankins on the same line as him will finally make the lions have a feared Dline like they used to. I think Ogbah another ultra athletic DE similar to Ansah could also be the pick here. With either guy the Lions defense just got a lot scarier for Offensive Lineman.
