2016 NFL Mock Draft: 7 Rounds

Round 1 Picks 17-31

Mark Sciubba Last Updated: April 22, 2016.

  1. Atlanta Falcons: Darron Lee, ROLB, Ohio State

The Falcons started off strong last year under HC Dan Quinn, unfortunately the team ending the season disappointingly and missed the playoffs. Even with significant strides last year the defense of the Falcons continues to be a weak spot. Darron Lee is part of the New Breed of Linebacker. Ultra athletic and can do it all for a defense. Any team looking to improve their defense has to have Lee high on their board. This would be another perfect coach and player matching and give that Falcon’s D another building block for the future.

  2. Indianapolis Colts: Noah Spence, 3-4 ROLB, Eastern Kentucky

The Colts desperately need to build up their talent in the trenches and all over defense. As stated earlier in this mock, GM Ryan Grigson has gone with the philosophy of drafting offensive weapons for his franchise QB instead of building up a defense. Ignoring the defense and run game in the draft has greatly hurt the Colts as a whole and his drafting has held the franchise back. Andrew Luck can be the greatest QB of all time but with no run game, no time in the pocket, and a defense that can’t stop playoff caliber offenses none of it matters. Noah Spence can come in and be the pass rusher the Colts so desperately need. The Colts really need a great draft this year to get back on track.

  3. Buffalo Bills: Leonard Floyd, 3-4 ROLB, Georgia

Last year in Buffalo was a disaster. In years prior the Bills' D looked like one of the best in the league, and a unit ready to lead the team to the playoffs. Mike Pettine and Jim Schwartz used what might of been the most talented D line in the league to put up monster sack and turnover numbers and win games off that. Then Rex Ryan became HC for the Bills. The man who is supposed to be one of the greatest defensive minds in the NFL and his scheme, somehow turned the Bill’s D into one of the worst in the league. While the offense looked greatly improved and playoff ready under new QB and OC Tyrod Taylor and Greg Roman, Rex’s D was a total disaster. Getting Leonard Floyd, the best pass rushing 3-4 outside linebacker in the draft to get after the QB with Jerry Hughes should go a long way to getting the Bill’s D back to how they were before. Floyd may have the highest ceiling of any pass rusher in this draft, and matched with what Rex Ryan is supposed to be, this pick would be a match made in heaven.

  4. New York Jets: Connor Cook, QB, Michigan State

The New York Jets looked great last year under first year HC Tod Bowles. Led by great defensive play and a strong run game that opened up the big play ability of receivers Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. The Jets looked like a team on the verge of the playoffs. A few mistakes by QB Ryan FItzpatrick and HC Todd Bowles, along with Darrelle Revis’s inability to cover Sammy Watkins left the Jets watching the playoffs from home once again. Drafting Cook and re-signing Fitz would be the perfect plan to ensure the Jets long-term success. Cook can sit and learn for a year or two and learn under a guy who has seen it all in the NFL. This pick may surprise some, but there are multiple teams that are extremely high on Cook that think he has all the makings of a franchise QB.

  5. Washington Redskins: Vernon Butler, NT, Louisiana Tech

Redskins seem like they have a GM who really gets it. Expect a very meat and potatoes draft for the Skins. After losing a key piece in Terrance Knighton, Vernon Butler can come in and fit a similar role. Butler can be a great NT for years to come for the Skins. Not only stuffing the run but providing some interior pressure on the QB, in the way Marcell Dareus does up in Buffalo. Building up the defensive line and run game will be the mission heading into this draft for the Redskins..

  6. Houston Texans: Laquon Treadwell, WR, Ole Miss

DeAndre Hopkins had a breakout year in 2015 despite poor QB play. Now that the texans have signed Brock Osweiler to a monster contract, the Texans need to add some more talent on their lackluster offense. Especially, after losing running back Arian Foster. Treadwell will come in and be able to take advantage of all the attention Hopkins is getting. Despite a poor 40 Treadwell will have a long great career similar to an Anquan Boldin. Not only does Treadwell fill a need, he might be the best player left on the board at this point regardless of position.

  7. Minnesota Vikings: Josh Doctson, WR, TCU

Josh Doctson will finally give Teddy Bridgewater a true number 1 receiver. Vikings fans should expect some early struggles with the offense at TCU Josh Doctson is coming from, but he has all the physical tools and talent to become a dominant NFL Wide Receiver. Its seems like there really isn’t a consensus number 1 receiver in the draft this year with 5 names being thrown around. Whoever gets Doctson, gets the number 1 receiver in the draft in my mind.

  8. Cincinnati Bengals: Michael Thomas, WR, Ohio State

Bengals end the first run on Receivers by selecting Michael Thomas. Thomas Will replace and in my opinion improve on what they lost at receiver. Pairing him With AJ Green, Tyler Eifert, and the two headed monster at running back of Hill and Bernard, will give Andy Dalton one of, if not the very best supporting cast in the NFL.

  9. Pittsburgh Steelers: Andrew Billings, NT, Baylor

Andrew Billings would give the Steelers something they haven’t had since the days of Casey Hampton. A dominant Nose Tackle who can step in right away, and not only help stop the run but clear the way for previous first round picks Bud Dupree, Jarvis Jones, and Ryan Shazier. Of course the Secondary is still a huge need for the Steelers, but with a deep corner and safety class and a true force at NT sitting here for the Steeler’s taking they pick Billings and get a NT that can be a mainstay of the Steeler’s D the way Hampton was for years.

  10. Seattle Seahawks: Taylor Decker, LT, Ohio State

Anyone who watched the Seahawks last year could see that the offensive line was the Achilles heel of this team. Adding a Offensive Lineman with the potential to be a force in the run and pass game for years to come would be a perfect match for the Seahawks. This pick will help the Seahawks get back to pounding the ball. Decker is a good value here and fills the biggest need the Seahawks have.

  11. Green Bay Packers: Reggie Ragland, 3-4 MLB, Alabama

The Packers have plenty of holes to fill in the draft but getting the best defensive player available is the best place to start. Having Ragland and Clay Matthews at linebacker, will make sure nobody bullies your defense. Ragland can be dominant against the run, and can even set the edge. Packers have a lot of needs, but lucky for them the best player on the board at this point fills one of them.

  12. Kansas City Chiefs: Derrick Henry, RB, Alabama

Andy Reid seems to be one of the last few minds in the NFL that truly values the RB position. The bruising Bama Back will be the perfect compliment for Jamaal Charles, and his eventual replacement. Chiefs could run the ball effectively on every team in the NFL, and propel themselves to a deep playoff run with Charles and Henry as a two headed monster out of the backfield in Kansas City.

  13. Arizona Cardinals: Paxton Lynch, QB, Memphis

Carson Palmer’s career is 2 or 3 years from being over and who knows if he’ll even be starting quality for all of them. Paxton Lynch is nowhere near ready to start in the NFL. Getting drafted here would be an ideal situation for him, as well as the Cardinals. He can sit and learn and let Bruce Arians mold all his fantastic physical tools into a franchise QB. Arians was part of the Steeler’s organization for years, and knows how to keep a team a perennial contender, this pick greatly helps them accomplish that.

  14. Carolina Panthers: Emmanuel Ogbah, RE, Oklahoma State

After an incredible 2015 season not many saw coming, the Panthers seem to be on the cusp of something special. Adding an athletic freak to get after opposing QBs should help them take the next step. Ogbah might have the highest ceiling of any pass rusher in the draft. He’ll help Panthers defense stay dominant and also fills a need for the Panthers.

Previous Pick: Tyler Boyd, WR, Pittsburgh

  15. Denver Broncos: Jarran Reed, 3-4 LE, Alabama

The Broncos defense have lost a lot this offseason, but good teams don’t have to rebuild they just reload. That’s exactly what the Broncos would be doing by selecting Reed. Some think that Reed is the number 1 Defensive Tackle in the draft, and if the Broncos feel that way they have to feel they’re getting an absolute steal. Reed was dominant against the run in college and he’ll fill the role of stuffing the run and eating space for Von Miller to run wild on offensives perfectly.
