2016 NFL Mock Draft: 7 Rounds
Round 5
Mark Sciubba Last Updated: April 22, 2016.
Tennessee Titans: Justin Simmons, FS, Boston College
- The Tennessee Titans get Justin Simmons to replace Michael Griffin at FS. Simmons can play CB, SS, or FS. He's 26-years-old, but has Jalen Ramsey's versatility and Brandon Weeden's age for a rookie entering the NFL. Tennessee goes with Simmons as the top defensive back to begin round 5, finding a starting free safety that will provide an instant impact.
Cleveland Browns: Spencer Drango, LT, Baylor
- Spencer Drango was a four-year starter at left tackle during his time at Baylor. Some believe Drango could move to right tackle or one of the guard spots in the NFL. Cleveland is a great fit for Drango if he slips to the fifth round because Drango would begin his career as a swing tackle to both Joe Thomas and Kyle Long, plus he could start at LT if the Browns traded Thomas because Long is more of a RT only. Not just that, Drango would also start out as a swing guard as well as a swing tackle meaning he may see the field as a rookie if one of the Browns offensive tackles or guards gets injured.
San Francisco 49ers: Graham Glasgow, RG, Michigan
- Graham Glasgow has the versatility to play all 3 position on the interior OL at guard on either side or center. San Francisco has Zane Beadles at LG which could be an upgrade over Boone. Kilgore and Martin will compliment each other at center, but a starting RG is still needed and that's where Glasgow may end up.
Oakland Raiders: Jalin Marshall, WR, Ohio State
- Jalin Marshall has incredible speed. He can line up at RB or slot receiver and can contribute on special teams as well. Andre Debose has had some off the field issues with the Raiders already after being a seventh round pick in 2015, so maybe the Raiders should add Marshall and pull the plug on Debose unless he takes a huge step forward in Training Camp this season.
Denver Broncos: Nick Vigil, 3-4 MLB, Utah State
- Bringing in Nick Vigil to compete with fourth round pick Blake Martinez for the MLB job across from Brandon Marshall is what Denver needs. Having both Martinez and Vigil will push both linebackers to be better. Denver got multiple TEs with Virgil Green and Julius Thomas and both TEs pushed each other to be better.
San Francisco 49ers: Brandon Shell, RT, South Carolina
- San Francisco adds another Gamecock. Shell will be a backup right tackle regardless of whether Anthony Davis returns to the team after taking a year off or regardless of whether he's dealt since Erik Pears did start all 16 games last year.
Jacksonville Jaguars: Tvyis Powell, SS, Ohio State
- Jacksonville will now have Jonathan Cyprien and Tashaun Gipson as starting safeties. Cyrprien enters a contract year meaning if he left, Tyvis Powell could start across from Gipson in a year from now.
Miami Dolphins: Antonio Morrison, MLB, Florida
- Miami can draft Morrison for depth. Koa Misi, Kiko Alonso, and Jelani Jenkins are all starting at LB plus Morrison can play OLB or MLB in the 4-3 or the 3-4 so in this scenario Morrison begins his career as a backup LB for depth.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Maurice Canady, CB, Virginia
- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will start Vernon Hargreaves III across from Grimes if Hargreaves drops to 9. Still, Tampa needs CB depth. Right now their backup corners on plays with 2 CBs are Alteraun Verner and Jonathan Banks. Banks had 10 deflections and 4 interceptions in 2014. Verner got benched for Tim Jennings so bringing in Canady to push the overpaid Verner for a roster spot in Round 5 is a must.
New York Giants: Jayron Kearse, SS, Clemson
- With FS Brandon Meriweather gone, Landon Collins is moving over from SS to FS since he has the versatility to play both safety spots. Cooper Taylor is currently listed as the teams strong safety. Getting Jayron Kearse, the nephew of Jevon Kearse in the fifth round is highway robbery.
Chicago Bears: Deiondre Hall, CB, Northern Iowa
- Deiondre Hall had a good Senior Bowl and could start over Tracy Porter as a #2 CB across from Kyle Fuller in 2-3 years. Hall's biggest concern is that he gets penalized too much. Hall could start out in nickel situations like Fuller did during his rookie season and if things go smoothly while Porter declines, then starting him in a year or two could be beneficial for the Bears.
Detroit Lions: Duke Williams, WR, Auburn
- After losing a hall of fame WR in Megatron, the Lions should double down on WRs in the draft to help bridge the gap til they get a new number 1.
New Orleans Saints: Jake McGee, TE, Florida
- Drew Brees is at his best when he has a reliable athletic tight end. McGee fits the bill.
Philadelphia Eagles: Beau Sandland, TE, Montana State
- Eagles get a developmental tight end and gives their new QB another weapon to grow with.
Oakland Raiders: Cassanova McKinzy, MLB, Auburn
- Raiders add a solid linebacker with starter potential to the great young nucleus they have on defense.
Indianapolis Colts: Peyton Barber, RB, Auburn
- Colts' GM Ryan Grigson shows he knows what he’s doing and uses a pick to help the run game.
Buffalo Bills: Tyler Marz, RT, Wisconsin
- Tyler Marz is perfect for the Bills' offense and what they do. He could be the starter come week 1 if they move him over to right tackle after he played left tackle at Wisconsin because Marz is a terrific run blocker.
Denver Broncos: Landon Turner, RG, North Carolina
- Denver wants competition at every spot on the roster and bringing in Turner will accomplish that. I could see him being a key backup in year 1.
Washington Redskins: Geronimo Allison, WR, Illinois
- This could be Desean Jackson and Pierre Garcon's last year with the team. Washington has found their franchise QB now they need to make sure he has weapons for years to come.
Houston Texans: Cody Core, WR, Ole Miss
- Houston takes a shot on Cody Core, who with the right coaching he can develop into something special.
Minnesota Vikings: D.J. White, CB, Georgia Tech
- D.J. White has been very underrated in this draft process. I think he has all the skills of a day 1 starter and can be a great player for a long time for not just the Vikings but any team.
Cincinnati Bengals: Roger Lewis, WR, Bowling Green
- Lewis had some off field issues and is reportedly off a few teams boards. That's good news for the Bengals in this mock as they get a steal to help replace what they lost at receiver.
Kansas City Chiefs: Avery Young, LG, Auburn
- Young will help open up holes for Charles and Henry and keep the run game dominant.
Green Bay Packers: Tyler Higbee, TE, Western Kentucky
- Green Bay gets the best playmaking tight end in the draft.
Philadelphia Eagles: Alex Lewis, LT, Nebraska
- Lewis can replace Jason Peters at LT when he retires. Lewis needs to put on weight and get his head on straight, but if he can do those things he’ll be a starting tackle in the NFL for a long time.
Kansas City Chiefs: Mike Thomas, WR, Southern Mississippi
- A pick that provides great value and makes sure chiefs never go weeks upon weeks with no touchdown from a receiver again.
Houston Texans: Nile-Lawrence Stample, NT, Florida State
- Houston gets a backup Nose Tackle and adds more competition on the D-line.
Arizona Cardinals: Bronson Kaufusi, 3-4 LE, BYU
- Kaufusi is a perfect fit for the Cardinals defense and can develop into a starter that sticks around for a long time.
Carolina Panthers: Res Odhiambo, LG, Boise State
- Panthers make sure that they can keep pounding with this pick.
Detroit Lions: Parker Ehinger, RT, Cincinnati
- Lions use a pick to repair that leaky offensive line.
Arizona Cardinals: Victor Ochi, 3-4 LOLB, Stony Brook
- Arizona gets a true pass rusher which is an underrated but great need for the Cardinals.
Seattle Seahawks: Cody Kessler, QB, USC
- Seattle gets Wilson’s backup who like any good back up can hopefully be traded for picks one day.
Cleveland Browns: Tyler Ervin, RB, San Jose State
- Browns' get a change of pace back and another playmaker on offense.
Cleveland Browns: Darrell Green, RG, San Diego State
- Cleveland gets a starting quality guard in Greene. San Diego State's right tackle kicks inside to guard.
San Francisco 49ers: Jake Coker, QB, Alabama
- This pick allows for the 49ers to trade Kapernick early in the season if they decide to move on.
San Diego Chargers: Fahn Cooper, RT, Ole Miss
- Chargers pass on Tunsil but get the other Ole Miss Tackle to be their swing backup.
