Chris Ransom grades the New York Giants 2015 NFL Draft. Do the Giants have a bright future after drafting Ereck Flowers with the ninth pick in the draft?
9. Ereck Flowers, RT, Miami FL C Grade
Ereck Flowers is a boom or bust pick. You could be looking at a backup right tackle or a Pro Bowl left tackle.
You see Flowers tape and you see a Pro Bowl left tackle. EA Sports has Flowers as a left tackle and Brandon Scherff listed as a left guard. One scout close to the Giants believes that Flowers lacks the footwork of a left tackle and may even have to move to guard like Greg Robinson if he wants to start right away.
There are mixed reviews on Flowers. I think William Beatty will remain at left tackle with Flowers beating out Brandon Mosley for the right tackle job. The main reason why I gave Flowers a C grade is because I see a pure run blocker that lacks the pass blocking or pass blocking footwork to play left tackle. Flowers might succeed at right tackle, but I think he will be a project to start his career.
33. Landon Collins, SS, Alabama A+ Grade
The Giants traded up 8 spots to get Landon Collins after he slipped to the second round. I tip my hat to Jerry Reese for finding a way to land the best safety in the 2015 NFL Draft.
The Giants needed a starting strong safety. Collins played strong safety at Alabama and he also had 102 total tackles in 2014. Awesome pick by the Giants.
74. Owamagbe Odighizuwa, RE, UCLA B Grade
Owamagbe Odighizuwa was a 3-4 right end at UCLA. He will have to adjust form the 5 technique to being a pass rusher that goes up against left tackles. Having the ideal size at 6-3 269 lbs certainly helps since that's the natural size for a 4-3 defensive end.
Luckily for Odighizuwa he can sit behind Jason Pierre Paul as a rookie. If Pierre Paul walks because the Giants refuse to pay him what he wants, Odighizuwa can come in and replace Pierre Paul with a basic understanding of the 4-3 defense after learning behind Pierre Paul for a year.
144. Mykkele Thompson, FS, Texas B Grade
Mykel Thompson is a safety out of Texas. The Texas Longhorns do a good job developing safeties.
There were better players available. At the same time, the need for drafting a free safety here outweighed the right to take the best player available. Thompson will be a backup free safety in the NFL so this is a solid pick.
186. Geremy Davis, WR, Connecticut D+ Grade
The Giants could have found a better wide receiver than Geremy Davis. Davis does a good job on special teams and has decent size at 6-2 216 lbs. I previously gave this a D grade, but decided to move this grade up to D+ grade because of his size and ability on special teams.
226. Bobby Hart, RG, Florida State D Grade
Bobby Hart played right tackle at Florida State. He can either be a third string right tackle or a backup right guard at the NFL. Either way, Hart will be a bench player on the right side of the offensive line to start his career.
New York Giants Team Grade: C+ Grade
The Giants addressed most of their needs in the 2015 NFL Draft, but they reached for a lot of players at those key positions and that's the big thing that I'm looking at. Reaching for guys like Ereck Flowers, Mykkele Thompson, Geremy Davis, and the undrafted Bobby Hart are the biggest reason why the Giants received a C+ grade. Truth be told, the only pick I loved was the pick where the Giants traded up for Landon Collins. If I gave the Giants a D+ grade, I'd just be some biased uneducated homer when it came to the NFL Draft because you have to look at the credo that Jerry Reese has established over the years as the Giants General Manager.
Ultimately, Ereck Flowers will be the X factor from the 2015 NFL Draft. If Flowers becomes a Pro Bowl left tackle, Eli Manning has a chance to make a comeback. Otherwise age will begin to catch up with Peyton Manning's little brother who is currently 34-years-old.
