Morgan Epstein grades the San Diego Chargers 2016 NFL Draft. Does San Diego have a bright future after drafting Joey Bosa with the third pick in the 2016 NFL Draft?
3. Joey Bosa, 3-4 LE, Ohio State C Grade
The Chargers took Joey Bosa third overall. Bosa has Pro Bowl potential.
I have two issues with this pick. First, we don't really know if Bosa will play 5-technique or outside linebacker. It looks more like 5-technique at this point. Second, Bosa is listed as the teams fourth string 3-4 left end. Not first string, second string, or third string. Fourth string. There is still time to turn it around, but if he's still on fourth string in June, odds are he will be a backup to start out the year which is why this pick gets a C grade. His uncle and dad were both first round picks and busts on top of that.
35. Hunter Henry, TE, Arkansas B+ Grade
Hunter Henry would have gotten a C grade for going in the first round, a B grade for going in the second round, or an A grade for going in the third round. Regardless Henry was the top tight end in this draft.
Hunter Henry should start out as a backup tight end similar to LaDarius Green. I think he's in a great situation to succeed Antonio Gates which is why this pick got a B+ grade.
66. Max Tuerk, C, USC C Grade
Max Tuerk has the tools to start at center. At the same time his durability concerns are pretty severe. Why would San Diego go out and get Matt Slauson who the Bears released to start at center if Tuerk wasn't injured. It makes you wonder doesn't it.
102. Joshua Perry, 3-4 MLB, Ohio State A Grade
Joshua Perry will begin as a backup to Manti Te'o. Perry was a tackling machine in college just like Te'o. This is gonna put a lot of pressure on Te'o to produce. It also gives Perry some time to learn the playbook. Once Te'o or Perryman goes down with an injury, Perry will win a starting spot and never give it back.
175. Jatavis Brown, 3-4 MLB, Akron D Grade
The Chargers should have Jatavis Brown listed as a 3-4 outside linebacker for depth. They currently have Brown listed as a third string inside linebacker for depth. That's just poor coaching by Mike McCoy setting the roster like that. If Brown was playing on the outside this would be a C grade.
179. Drew Kaser, P, Texas A&M B Grade
Riley Dixon was the best punter in the draft. At the same time, Drew Kaser is only one of two rookies starting on the Chargers depth chart at the moment.
198. Derek Watt, FB, Wisconsin B Grade
J.J. Watt's little brother blocked for Melvin Gordon at Wisconsin. Watt will be used as a fullback in 2016. Outside of Kaser, he's the only player that is guaranteed a starting spot if the Chargers use a fullback on the first play of the game.
224. Donavon Clark, RG, Michigan State B Grade
Unlike Max Tuerk who is listed as a third string center, Clark has impressed in OTA's and is currently the teams backup right guard behind D.J. Fluker. If Fluker goes down, Clark will get some starts.
San Diego Chargers Team Grade: C- Grade
Chargers fans better pray this team stays in San Diego. Philip Rivers will have reservations about playing quarterback if this team goes to Los Angeles.
San Diego didn't get any immediate starters. Perry was their best pick and their last three picks have the best chance of starting at this point which is scary. If Bosa pans out the Chargers will get a B- grade 5 years from now. If Henry can blossom under Gates this could be a B grade. Maybe even a B+ grade if Tuerk can get healthy, but I doubt that at this point. San Diego had an awful draft and it wouldn't surprise me if they picked in the top 5 once again in 2017.
