2016 NFL Mock Draft: 3 Rounds
Round 1 Picks 17-31
Jason Bantle Last Updated: April 24, 2016.
Atlanta Falcons: Kevin Dodd, LE, Clemson
- Shaq Lawson is rumored to be the preference here but now he is off the board. Most people will tell you that they love Leonard FLoyd, another possiblity. The scout we spoke with told us that they were leaning Carl Nassib or the Clemson DEs. Since the interview, Nassib has fallen a bit while both Clemson DEs are red hot. Dodd could be the better of the two and putting him at left end allows last years first round pick Vic Beasley to move over to right end.
Previous Pick: Shaq Lawson, LE, Clemson
Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Billings, NT, Baylor
- Andrew Billings or Ryan Kelly. It depends who you want to believe and who is sending out the smokescreens. Both are needs. The Colts need to improve their DTs and Center. Could go either way.
Buffalo Bills: Robert Nkemdiche, LE, Ole Miss
- The Bills will without a doubt go with a pass rusher with this pick, but which one is a mystery. Either clemson DE would be a good fit but both are off the board in this scenario. The scout we spoke with told us that worst case scenario, Nkemdiche could be drafted and has the versatility to play any position on their d-line under Rex Ryan.
New York Jets: Noah Spence, 3-4 ROLB, Eastern Kentucky
- The Jets love for Spence is no mystery. He is top on their board and other teams get the impression they may even want to move up for him. In this mock, he falls to 20. The Jets would need no time to make this selection.
Washington Redskins: Michael Thomas, WR, Ohio State
- This pick could be DT (like Reed or Rankins) but I get the feeling it will be Jackson or Michael Thomas (WR from Ohio State). It is really a toss up but without the speed many teams covet, the Skins might be able to get Thomas in round 2. Jackson will not make it out of round one.
Houston Texans: Corey Coleman, WR, Baylor
- Now the rush on WRs begins. The next 3 teams all want WR in the worst way. Texans' HC Bill O'Brien reportedly loves Coleman. Reports are out there that the team may prefer speedster Will Fuller, so it will be interesting to see who wins that debate.
Minnesota Vikings: Josh Doctson, WR, TCU
- This seems to be the WR the Vikings have been linked to from the beginning and gives Bridgewater a second WR opposite sophomore Stefon Diggs to finally make the step forward we have been waiting for. The Vikings also seem to be in the market for a LB and a Safety.
Cincinnati Bengals: Laquon Treadwell, WR, Ole Miss
- Cincinnati needs a new wide receiver across from A.J. Green. They lost Mohammed Sanu and Marvin Jones a twide receiver which is why they take a receiver in the first round.
Previous Pick: Will Fuller, WR, Notre Dame
Pittsburgh Steelers: Darron Lee, 3-4 ROLB, Ohio State
- CB is the biggest area of need and most would have them take Eli Apple who they like. But reports are that Darron Lee is their top rated player overall. He ran the fastest 40 out of all LBs - faster than all members of the Legion of Boom in Seattle. Like Ryan Shazier, the Steelers will find it hard to pass on him. Look for them to try and trade down to get their CB because passing on their top rated player would be near impossible.
Seattle Seahawks: Jason Spriggs, LT, Indiana
- The Seahawks are rumored to love Lee as well (above), but in the scenario where he is off the board (which he probably will be) they abolutely must go OT here. Their o-line is a wreck. I am hearing that thgey prefer Spriggs to Tayor Decker- who lacks pass blocking pedigree needed as a LT.
Green Bay Packers: Kenny Clark, NT, UCLA
- The Packers added Jared Cook in Free Agency as at least someone to help Rodgers for the next season. The two biggest needs (assuming Jordy Nelson is healthy as advertised) are at DT after the retirement of BJ Raji and MLB so Clay Matthews can go back outside to his natural position as a pass rusher. MLB would be a reach here so the Packers get their pick of Nose Tackles for their 3-4. I honestly do not know which NT they prefer but I get the impression it might be Clark.
Kansas City Chiefs: Jarran Reed, 3-4 LE, Alabama
- Like the Steelers, the biggest need area here is CB. However, I am hearing that KC is trying everything they can to make sure they land Jarren Reed at DT and worrying about secondary in the following round.
Arizona Cardinals: Mackensie Alexander, CB, Clemson
- Mackensie Alexander is the most controversial CB in this class. Some have him as a top 5 talent - others have him as a 4th-5th rounder. It really depends on scheme. Alexander seems to be a great fit here however as the Cards play a ton of bump and man. With the injury to Tyron Mathieu, the Cards really took a hit down the stretch last year. Now, they will have some help in the secondary.
Carolina Panthers: Eli Apple, CB, Ohio State
- Apple could very easily go as high as 13 to the Dolphins. Getting him at 30 is highway robbery. The Panthers were 15-1 last year and are solid through most positions. If any team just takes the best player available, it will be Carolina. Tyler Boyd is a strong possibility too as I have heard they have Boyd and Shaq Lawson as two of their favorite players in the draft.
Denver Broncos: Jaylon Smith, 3-4 MLB, Notre Dame
- The biggest mystery of the draft is where will Jaylon Smith go? A guy who was a sure-fire top 5 pick blew his knee out in the bowl game and has severe nerve damage. It is unlikely he will even see the field in 2016, essentially redshirting him for a year. Though some teams reportedly havehim off their draft board altogether, others have said that he will be 100% by the start of the 2017 season. If that is true, the Super Bowl Champs would be getting a top 5 talent ready for next year.
