Chris Ransom grades the New York Jets 2015 NFL Draft. Do the Jets have a bright future after drafting Leonard Williams with the sixth pick in the draft?
6. Leonard Williams, 3-4 LE, USC B- Grade
Leonard Williams was the best player left in the draft. He didn't fill a need at quarterback or 3-4 right outside linebacker. Williams is currently listed as a backup behind Muhammed Wilkerson with Sheldon Richardson as a 3-4 right end on the Jets' depth chart.
You don't draft backups with top 10 picks. You want guys that can start right away. I get that Williams was the best player available, but this pick made no sense in terms of need. That's why the Jets got a B- grade because they deserve a C grade for drafting on need, but an A+ grade for drafting for value. I thought the B- grade was a fair grade for Williams who has the versatility to play anywhere on a defensive line in a 4-3 or a 3-4 scheme.
37. Devin Smith, WR, Ohio State B Grade
I originally gave the Jets a D grade for drafting Devin Smith. I'm moving this up to a B grade because Smith is the only player from this draft that's a projected starter at this point.
That being said, Smith will start in the slot. Also there were better players available like Jaelen Strong. That's why this pick gets a B grade.
82. Lorenzo Mauldin, 3-4 ROLB, Louisville B- Grade
I originally gave this an A+ grade. When you consider that Mauldin is sitting behind Calvin Pace and Quentin Coples they really didn't make an upgrade, but rather add depth at pass rusher. Solid pick by the Jets here drafting a position for need which is why the Jets get a B- grade for taking Mauldin now.
103. Bryce Petty, QB, Baylor C Grade
Bryce Petty looked good until the Senior Bowl in Mobile. Jon Gruden cussed at him in Gruden's QB Camp on ESPN which says a lot about his play.
Petty is going to have to learn a Pro Style offense. He will start out as a third string quarterback behind Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick. The only way Petty succeeds is if the Jets are patient and wait to develop him.
152. Jarvis Harrison, RG, Texas A&M C Grade
Jarvis Harrison has the versatility to play left guard, right guard, center, or right tackle. Harrison will be a third string right guard on the Jets roster. I think Harrison provides better value in round 5 than Bryce Petty in the fourth round.
I think Harrison provides better value in round 5 than Bryce Petty in the fourth round. The Jets' also needed depth at guard with Willie Colon moving from right guard to left guard and James Carpenter moving from left guard to right guard. With all that confusion at guard, depth was needed.
At the same time, this is a tryout pick. Harrison is currently a third string player fighting for a roster spot and a backup gig with the New York Jets. Harrison's top priority should be to worry about making the Jets final 53-man roster.
223. Deon Simon, NT, Northwestern State F Grade
Deon Simon is a third string nose tackle. I'm not even sure he makes the roster. Terrible pick.
New York Jets Team Grade: D+ Grade
This was a terrible draft for the New York Jets. The only starter they got was Devin Smith as a slot receiver in the second round. The Jets will have to rely on their Free Agents to win games. If the Jets get a quarterback in the 2016 NFL Draft, they will contend, but until then the Jets will remain on the outside of the NFL Playoffs come January.
