Chris Ransom grades the San Diego Chargers 2015 NFL Draft. Do the Chargers have a bright future after drafting Melvin Gordon with the fifteenth pick in the draft?
15. Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin A Grade
Melvin Gordon is a special running back. Gordon started two seasons with a minimum over 1,600 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns in both seasons. Gordon ran for 1,609 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns in 2013. In 2014, Gordon ran for 2,587 rushing yards and 29 rushing touchdowns showing major improvement.
Gordon had 12 games with a minimum of 120 yards. His three biggest games came against LSU with 140 yards to begin the season, then there was the game against Nebraska where Gordon ran for 408 yards in a single game breaking Ladainian Tomlinson's, and Auburn where he ran for 251 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns in the 2015 Outback Bowl.
Melvin Gordon is the most complete back to leave college to enter the NFL since C.J. Spiller. Still being a complete running back in College doesn't always translate to the NFL. Despite this I think Gordon will be a star in San Diego because he does the little things like pass blocking, displaying ball carrier vision, running through the lanes, and catching out of the backfield so well. The production and tape confirms this.
This was the player San Diego needed to take. The reason the Chargers got an A grade instead of an A+ grade is because they traded up 2 spots to get a guy they may have gotten at 17.
48. Denzel Perryman, 3-4 MLB, Miami FL B+ Grade
Denzel Perryman is a talented run stuffer with experience in a 4-3 defense. I'm not sure how Perryman will adapt to a 3-4, but he has the range and athleticism to take Manti Te'o's job. Perryman may lack Te'o's size, but he provided premium value in the second round with most of the quality middle linebackers gone.
83. Craig Mager, CB, Texas State B- Grade
Craig Mager can play special teams as a kick returner or a punt return. Mager struggles in coverage and misses tackles constantly when you see his tape. Even if Mager panned out he'd be a nickel corner at best with Brandon Flowers and Jason Verrett on this roster.
153. Kyle Emmanuel, 3-4 LOLB, North Dakota State B Grade
San Diego needs Melvin Ingram and Kyle Emmanuel to become sack artists at 3-4 right outside linebacker and 3-4 left outside linebacker. I feel like that's asking for too much.
Losing both Dwight Freeney and Jarrett Johnson was a huge blow. Something about Kyle Emmanuel reminds me of Jarrett Johnson. Some don't like this pick, but Emmanuel might be the only steal the Chargers added in this draft following the first two rounds of the 2015 NFL Draft.
192. Darius Philon, 3-4 RE, Arkansas F Grade
San Diego already has Kendall Reyes and Corey Liuget in the 5-technique. Why is San Diego trying to bring Philon in. Terrible pick by the Chargers.
San Diego Chargers Team Grade: C Grade
I admire what San Diego did with their early picks. After that San Diego drafted an Oreo Cookie of backups with Kyle Emmanuel being the cream of the Oreo Cookie that might develop into an NFL starter.
