2022 NFL Mock Draft: Final Mock 7 Rounds
Round 2
Chris Ransom follow @DraftUtopia Last Updated: April 28, 2022.
Jacksonville Jaguars: Chad Muma, 3-4 MLB, Wyoming
- At one point, I was considering Chad Muma to the Green Bay Packers at 28 in the late first round if Nakobe Dean and Devin Lloyd are off the board. Jacksonville should feel thrilled about drafting Chad Muma in the second round. Right now Foye Oluokun the Free Agent Jacksonville signed from Atlanta and Shaq Quarterman Jacksonville's 2020 fourth round pick from Miami FL are the two starters at 3-4 middle linebacker after releasing Myles Jack, trading Joe Schobert to Pittsburgh, and letting Damien Wilson walk in Free Agency following a career high in total tackles in 2021 where he stepped in after Jacksonville traded Schobert to Pittsburgh.
- Some will say this pick is a reach, but I was really impressed with Chad Muma on film and he tied Wisconsin linebacker Leo Chenal with a 91.4 run stuffing rating which was best in the FBS for both Muma and Chenal. Muma had a 6.83 3-cone drill time at Wyoming's Pro Day.
- The 6-2 241 lb Chad Muma had 85 solo tackles, 57 assisted tackles, 142 total tackles, 8 tackles for a loss, 3 interceptions, 2 quarterback hurries, 2 defensive touchdowns, 1.5 sacks, and 1 deflection from a pass breakup. Chad Muma displayed much better pass rushing, run stuffing, and coverage then former Wyoming middle linebacker Logan Wilson who coached him over text message. Muma also held Colorado State tight end Trey McBride to 9 receptions for 98 receiving yards while keeping McBride out of the end zone. Chad Muma will compliment Foye Oluokun quite well at 3-4 middle linebacker in Jacksonville since Muma can play middle linebacker in either a 4-3 or 3-4 scheme.
- Jacksonville's front 7 will have Malcolm Brown at 3-4 right end, Foley Fatukasi at nose tackle, Travon Walker at 3-4 left end, Josh Allen at 3-4 right outside linebacker, K'Lavon Chaisson at 3-4 left outside linebacker, Foye Oluokun at 3-4 middle linebacker, and Chad Muma at 3-4 middle linebacker if the Jaguars draft Muma in the second round after taking Walker first overall.
Detroit Lions: Leo Chenal, 3-4 MLB, Wisconsin
- Detroit gets a day 1 starter at 3-4 middle linebacker here. The 6-3 250 lb Leo Chenal had 59 solo tackles, 56 total tackles, 115 total tackles, 18.5 tackles for a loss, 8 sacks, and 5 quarterback hurries while posting a 91.4 run stuffing rating tying Chad Muma for the best run stuffing rating in the country. Leo Chenal kept Kenneth Walker III and Kyren Williams in check.
- Leo Chenal would start one of the 3-4 middle linebacker spots in Detroit. This means Alex Anzalone, Derrick Barnes, and Jarrad Davis would compete for the other starting spot next to Leo Chenal giving Detroit incredible depth on their front 7 with depth on the 3-4 defensive line along with depth at 3-4 outside linebacker and 3-4 middle linebacker.
New York Jets: Kyler Gordon, CB, Washington
- The 5-11 194 lb Kyler Gordon had 7 deflections for pass breakups next to Trent McDuffie at Washington in 2021. He didn't allow a touchdown on over 722 snaps. I gave Kyler Gordon an A grade in man coverage, an A- grade in zone coverage, and an A- grade in press coverage. He can play cover 0, cover 1, cover 2, cover 3, or cover 4. Kyler Gordon compliments Bryce Hall as a number two boundary cornerback which is where he lined up at Washington across from Trent McDuffie after allowing 0 passing touchdowns on 345 snaps in 2021. Drafting Kyler Gordon also allows you to move Free Agent D.J. Reed inside to a nickel cornerback role.
New York Giants: David Ojabo, 3-4 ROLB, Michigan
- The New York Giants get a pass rusher here. The 6-4 250 lb David Ojabo dominated in 2021 with 24 solo tackles, 11 assisted tackles, 35 total tackles, 12 tackles for a loss, 11 sacks, 8 quarterback hurries, 5 forced fumbles, and 3 deflections from pass breakups. The only reason Ojabo fell to the second round is because he tore his ACL. New York can pair David Ojabo up with Azeez Ojulari giving New York a deadly tandem at 3-4 outside linebacker when both Ojulari and Ojabo are fully healthy.
Houston Texans: Roger McCreary, CB, Auburn
- The 5-11 189 lb Roger McCreary dominated on film against Alabama and had 14 deflections from pass breakups for Auburn in 2021. I gave Roger McCreary an A grade in man coverage a C- grade in zone coverage, and an A grade in press coverage. He can play in a cover 0, cover 1, or cover 2 defense. He also did well at the 2022 Reese's Senior Bowl before running a 4.50 40-time at the 2022 NFL Combine. McCreary improved on that time with a 4.45 40-time at Auburn's Pro Day. After being the number one field cornerback at Auburn he'll reprise that role in Houston. The Texans need a number one cornerback and I believe McCreary can be that guy despite some scouts questioning his arm length.
New York Jets: Chris Olave, WR, Ohio State
- Chris Olave is a bargain in the second round since he was the go-to-guy for Justin Fields at Ohio State in 2020 while having 12 receiving touchdowns in 2019 as he enters his senior season at Ohio State. The 6-0 187 lb Chris Olave had 65 receptions, 936 receiving yards, and 13 receiving touchdowns in 2021. He ran a 4.39 at the 2022 NFL Combine and had a good workout at Ohio State's 2022 Pro Day. Chris Olave is great at running streak routes and can give Zach Wilson another deep threat.
- I need to see Chris Olave do more in terms of route running to say he'll be a star, but this is a good value pick for the New York Jets who now have Corey Davis, Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, and Elijah Moore. New York can cut Corey Davis in 2023 to save $10.5-million in cap space knowing they still have Wilson, Olave, and Moore on their rookie deals with Zach Wilson at quarterback. New York also has C.J. Uzomah and Tyler Conklin on three year contracts at tight end to take pressure off of the receivers.
Chicago Bears: Sean Rhyan, LT, UCLA
- Chicago gets a blindside left tackle for Justin Fields while keeping Teven Jenkins at right tackle. The 6-5 321 lb Sean Rhyan gives Justin Fields a blindside while Teven Jenkins compliments Sean Rhyan at right tackle. Justin Fields needs better bookends going forward in year two if the Chicago Bears want to keep their frnachise quarterback upright.
- Sean Rhyan can pass block, run block, and zone block effectively. He's also got the pass blocking strength, run blocking strength, pass blocking footwork, and run blocking footwork you want a left tackle to display. The rest of his game needs to develop in terms of cut blocking, and pancake blocking.
Seattle Seahawks: Daniel Faalele, RT, Minnesota
- Seattle gets a day 1 starter at right tackle to go with Charles Cross the Mississippi State left tackle that I mocked to Seattle at 9. The 6-8 387 lb Daniel Faalele showcased the versatility to play left tackle and right tackle in Mobile. He dominated in Mobile putting Arnold Ebiketie in his place in the one-on-one drills down in Mobile lining up at both left tackle and right tackle in Senior Bowl practices despite mainly playing right tackle at Minnesota. Faalele has the pass blocking, run blocking, zone blocking, pass blocking strength, and run blocking strength to start right away. His footwork and foot speed is what needs to improve. He's got a terrific knee bend for a bigger man on the offensive line.
- Faalele would be a first round prospect if he knew how to control his weight, but he reminds me a lot of Orlando Brown Jr. a few years ago when watching his film. Seattle gambles on Daniel Faalele at 40 hoping for another Orlando Brown Jr. at 40 since Seattle needs starters everywhere on their offensive line.
Seattle Seahawks: Desmond Ridder, QB, Cincinnati
- The 6-3 207 lb Desmond Ridder has the arm strength, throwing power, velocity, and competitive toughness that NFL teams are looking for. Desmond Ridder led Cincinnati to a second consecutive 12-0 regular season with 3,334 passing yards, 30 passing touchdowns, 361 rushing yards, 6 rushing touchdowns, 3,544 total yards, and 36 total touchdowns in 2021. Ridder also had the biggest hand size at the Senior Bowl with 10 inch hands. Ridder ran a 4.49 at the 2022 NFL Combine while tying Malik Willis for the best Wonderlic score. Desmond Ridder probably isn't a future NFL starter, but Seattle can gamble on him in the second round to compete with Drew Lock and Jacob Eason for the starting quarterback job.
- Desmond Ridder will have Charles Cross and Daniel Faalele as his starting offensive tackles if he beats out Lock and Eason for the startign job. Worst case scenario, Ridder struggles as a rookie and Seattle gets Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud in 2023 with Ridder as a backup on his rookie deal for three more years. Best case scenario, Desmond Ridder becomes a franchise quarterback for Seattle at 41.
Indianapolis Colts: Tyler Smith, LT, Tulsa
- Chris Ballard is roling with Matt Pryor as his blindside in 2022. Obviously, he's not the long-term answer. The 6-4 324 lb Tyler Smith out of Tulsa held his own on film against Tyreke Smith and Myjai Sanders. He's got the pass blocking and run blocking you want a starting left tackle to have, but the rest of his game is raw as he needs a year or two to develop. Despite being raw, Tyler Smith has a similar ceiling to Terron Armstead and that would do wonders for Matt Ryan the new quarterback that the Indianapolis Colts acquired. The only team that may get in the way of Tyler Smith falling here is New Orleans whose been scouting Smith heavily.
Atlanta Falcons: Drake Jackson, 3-4 LOLB, USC
- The 6-3 254 lb Drake Jackson can play 4-3 right end, 4-3 left end, 3-4 right outside linebacker, or 3-4 left outside linebacker with his versatility. Drake Jackson has the rip moves and swim moves you want a pass rusher to have on film as well despite only having 8 tackles for a loss and 5 sacks in 2021. Jackson also has a good burst and explosive first step. He pressured Oregon State's quarterback constantly even though he made the right throws and reads in a blowout win over USC. Drake Jackson would be complimenting Jermaine Johnson II in Atlanta with a veteran like Lorenzo Carter there as insurance if Jackson needs a year to develop before starting.
Cleveland Browns: Jahan Dotson, WR, Penn State
- Cleveland needs a number two target next to Amari Cooper allowing Donovan Peoples-Jones to move to the slot. The 5-10 178 lb Jahan Dotson can run 24/30 routes on the route tree. He's fast with a 4.43 40 time. Jahan Dotson had 91 receptions, 1,182 receiving yards, and 12 receiving touchdowns in 2021. If he was a little bit taller, he'd probably be a first round target, but training with Kentucky wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson before dominated the 2022 NFL Combine and Penn State's Pro Day has certainly helped him cement his status in the top 50.
Baltimore Ravens: Arnold Ebiketie, 3-4 ROLB, Penn State
- The 6-2 250 lb Arnold Ebiketie shows great athleticism on tape as well as a variety of moves off the edge making him an ideal replacement for Chandler Jones in the third round. The Cameroon Native, played Basketball and Soccer in Maryland before switching to football as a sophomore before getting a scholarship offer to Temple following his High School career at Albert Einstein High School.
- Arnold Ebiketie became a starter for Temple in 2020 when he had 28 solo tackles, 14 assisted tackles, 42 total tackles, 8 tackles for a loss, and 4 sacks. After his promising season at Temple he transferred to Penn State and had 34 solo taclkes, 28 assisted tackles, 62 total tackles, 18 tackles for a loss, 9.5 sacks, 7 quarterback hurries, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 quarterback hurry in his lone season at Penn State in 2021.
- Arnold Ebiketie has the athleticism, the rip moves, the swim moves, bull rush moves, spin moves. His variety of moves makes him stand out as far as traits go since he may have a bigger variety of moves over any edge rusher in this draft. He lined up at 4-3 right end, 4-3 left end, 3-4 right outside linebacker, and 3-4 left outside linebacker in Mobile.
- When watching Arnold Ebiketie in the 2022 Reese's Senior Bowl, I saw Minnesota offensive tackle Daniel Faalele push him backwards in one-on-one drills. However he did dominate against Ohio State left tackle Nicholas Petit-Friere on film being 1/2 against two NFL offensive tackles from the Big 10 is my dealbreaker for not taking him in the first round, but he's an incredible value pick in the second round if Daniel Faalele is off the board.
- Arnold Ebiketie is alright in coverage, but this is an area he's gonna have to get better at if he wants to sustain success in the NFL. With that being said, it's time for my final verdict on Penn State's pass rusher before I move on to my next writeup.
- Is Arnold Ebiketie the first round guy Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks are hyping him up to be? Absoultely not! Is he a top 50 prospect, I believe so after studying him closer since he did well against Ohio State left tackle Nicholas Petit-Frier on film.
- Odafe Oweh and Tyus Bowser both suffered injuries late in the 2021 regular season that may keep them out of the 2022 NFL Season. This is the biggest reason why Balitmore has to double up at 3-4 outside linebacker by adding depth at both edge rusher spots. Arnold Ebiketie can come in and start in week 1 for the Balitmore Ravens if Oweh and Bowser are unable to go for the Ravens in week 1.
Minnesota Vikings: Tariq Woolen, CB, UTSA
- Minnesota gets a guy who can be a number one field cornerback as early as 2023 in the second round. The 6-4 205 lb Tariq Woolen ran a 4.26 40 time at the 2022 NFL Combine. He's probably the best cornerback at winnigng blocks in the entire 2022 NFL Draft. I gave Tariq Woolen an A grade in man coverage, a C grade in zone coverage, and an A grade in press coverage. Woolen can play cover 0, cover 1, and cover 2 schemes. He had 3 deflections from pass breakups against Illinois. Durability is the only concern with Woolen. Minnesota can start Tariq Woolen out as a boundary cornerback next to Patrick Peterson and Woolen will be ready to take over as the field cornerback facing number one receivers in 2023 after playing with Patrick Peterson for a year during his rookie season in 2022.
Washington Commanders: Jalen Pitre, SS, Baylor
- Washington needs multiple starters at safety. You can make a case for Baylor safety Jalen Pitre, Maryland safety Nick Cross, Georgia safety Lewis Cine, and Penn State safety Jaquan Brisker here. Jalen Pitre and Nick Cross are both capable of being day 1 starters where as Cine and Brisker are both top 100 picks, but neither safety that the media is hyping up is a top 50 player in my honest opinion.
- Some people on Youtube say Jaquon Brisker and Lewis Cine are the most versatile safeties in this draft after Kyle Hamilton and Daxton Hill. I disagree with this since Jalen Pitre lined up as an edge rusher, extra linebacker, nickel cornerback, strong safety, and free safety when playing against Oklahoma State in this years Big 12 Championship. You can argue that Jalen Pitre and Nick Cross are just as versatile as the two first round safeties in this years draft.
- The 5-10 196 lb Jalen Pitre had 56 solo tackles, 19 assisted tackles, 75 total tackles, 18.5 tackles for a loss, 7 deflections from pass breakups, 3.5 sacks, 3 quarterback hurries, 3 forced fumbles, 2 intrceptions, and 1 fumble recovery in 2021. Pitre won Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2021. I gave Jalen Pitre a C+ grade in man coverage, a B grade in zone coverage, a A grade in press coverage with one Chiefs fan telling me he presses like Jalen Ramsey when he lines up as a nickel corner, and a B grade against the run. Pitre's biggest strength is how he uses his eyes for play recognition and his football IQ. Pitre ran a 4.46 at Baylor's Pro Day.
- Jalen Pitre was my only safety outside of Hamilton and Daxton Hill to get an A+ grade in versatility which is why he got a landslide edge over Nick Cross for my third best safety even though you could make a case for Nick Cross being the third best coverage safety in this class. The thing is Cross is raw while Pitre is more refined safety prospect who can help Washington right away which is why I mocked Jalen Pitre to Washington at 47.
Chicago Bears: Jalen Tolbert, WR, South Alabama
- The Bears use this second round pick from the Chargers in the Khalil Mack trade on a big body wide receiver for Justin Fields now that Allen Robinson is gone. The 6-1 195 lb Jalen Tolbert 64 receptions, 1,085 receiving yards, and 8 receiving touchdowns dominating in the Sun Belt Conference in 2020. Tolbert had 82 receptions, 1,474 receiving yards, and 8 receiving touchdowns in 2021 improving on his play. Tolbert followed that up with a good week at the 2022 Reese's Senior Bowl as well as a 4.49 40-time at the 2022 NFL Combine. Ian Cummings of Pro Football Network posted a scouting report on Jalen Tolbert which you can click in the link below.
New Orleans Saints: Nicholas Petit-Friere, LT, Ohio State
- New Orleans gets their replacement to Terron Armstead here after getting a Kenny Pickett and Drake London with their first two picks. Nicholas Petit-Friere was once a first round prospect prior to his awful game on film against Michigan. New Orleans will be thrilled to get Nicholas Petit-Friere in the second round.
- The 6-5 315 lb Nicholas Petit-Friere can pass block, run block, and zone block. He's got the pass blocking footwork and run blocking footwork. He's versatile enough to play both left tackle and right tackle. He needs to get stronger though. He was considered a first round prospect before Aidan Hutchinson knocked him flat on his ass in Ohio State's annual rivalry game against Michigan. He also struggled against Penn State pass rusher Arnold Ebiketie. He did do well against Purdue defensive end George Karlafits and Minnesota defensive end Boye Mafe.
- With Nicholas Petit-Friere, New Orleans now has five quality starters on their offensive line. New Orleans has Nicholas Petit-Friere at left tackle, Andrus Peat at left guard, Erik McCoy at center, Cesar Ruiz at right guard, and Ryan Ramczyk at right tackle. This offensive line works for Alvin Kamara assuming he doesn't get suspended. It also works for the winner of the quarterback competition between Jameis Winston, Andy Dalton, and Kenny Pickett.
Kansas City Chiefs: Travis Jones, DT, Connecticut
- Kansas City needs a starting 4-3 defensive tackle next to Chris Jones. The 6-4 326 lb Travis Jones had 7 quarterback hurries, 6.5 tackles for a loss, and 4.5 sacks in 2021. He also did well at the 2022 Reese's Senior Bowl and dominated the 2022 NFL Combine. He's my third best defensive tackle in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Philadelphia Eagles: Christian Watson, WR, North Dakota State
- Philadelphia gets an upgrade over Jalen Reagor their 2020 first round pick whose been a massive disappointment. The 6-4 211 lb Christian Watson dominated the 2022 Reese's Senior Bowl, the 2022 NFL Combine, and North Dakota State's Pro Day. Some have Watson going in the first round now despite only having 43 receptions, 800 receiving yards, and 7 receiving touchdowns. Watson can run 25/30 routes on the route tree from what I've seen on film so he's much better than his production and statistics would indicate.
- Jalen Hurts now has DeVonta Smith as his number one receiver with Christian Watson as his number two target. Jalen Reagor would compete with Quez Watkins for the slot receiver job with the loser of that competition being the Eagles top backup receiver while Zach Pascal is the number five receiver with J.J. Arcega-Whiteside being the number six receiver, and Greg Ward potentially moving to special teams as a return specialist if the Eagles cannot find a quality return specialist in day 3 of the 2022 NFL Draft.
Pittsburgh Steelers: Skyy Moore, WR, Western Michigan
- The 5-10 194 lb Skyy Moore compliments Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool in the slot with JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Washington gone. Skyy Moore led Western Michigan in receptions and receiving yards as a true freshman over Dwayne Eskeridge in 2019. Skyy Moore had 95 receptions, 1,292 receiving yards, and 10 receiving touchdowns in 2021. Moore ran a 4.41 40 time at the 2022 NFL Combine and caught every target thrown his way. A trio of Johnson, Claypool, and Moore is great for Matt Corral who I gave the Steelers at 20. Skyy Moore and Chase Claypool both have fewer drops than Diontae Johnson as well. Pittsburgh is a place where Moore could legitimately emerge as their number one receiver in a few years.
Green Bay Packers: Trey McBride, TE, Colorado State
- Green Bay drafts the one tight end who would be an immediate upgrade over both Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis with their first second round pick. That tight end is Colorado State tight end Trey McBride.
- The 6-3 243 lb Trey McBride dominated as a blocker in Mobile during the 2022 Reese's Senior Bowl. He also showed the ability to run all 30 routes on a route tree just by watching the routes he ran on film, the routes he ran in Mobile, and the routes he ran during the 2022 NFL Combine where he caught everything his way. The only tight ends currently playing in the NFL that can run all 30 routes on a route tree are Travis Kelce, Rob Gronkowski, George Kittle, Mark Andrews, T.J. Hockenson, Kyle Pitts, and Dallas Goedert. That's pretty good company to be in, and personally, I think McBride is the best route runner in the entire draft among both the wide receivers and tight ends which is why McBride cracked the late part of my first round. Trey McBride doesn't have the speed those other tight ends have, but the former three sport athlete in High School played football, wrestling, and track prior to enrolling into Colorado State.
- Trey McBride had 90 receptions, 1,121 receiving yards, and 1 receiving touchdown in 2021. Colorado State didn't use McBride in the red zone enough as McBride caught a touchdown pass during the 2022 Reese's Senior Bowl pracitce as well as the 2022 NFL Combine. McBride has traits to be a late first round tight end. I love the fit of Trey McBride in Green Bay as I personally believe he can have a similar impact to Rob Gronkowski if he goes to a team like Green Bay or Cincinnati in the second round.
New England Patriots: Martin Emerson, CB, Mississippi State
- New England gets possibly the only guy who can be a number one field cornerback in the second round. The 6-2 201 lb Martin Emerson improved his 40 time at the NFL Combine of a 4.52 to a 4.48 at Mississippi State's Pro Day. Martin plays like a corner with 4.3 speed on film despite his 40-time. I gave Martin Emerson an A grade in man coverage, a C- grade in zone coverage, and an A grade in press coverage. Emerson can play in a cover 0, cover 1, or cover 2 scheme.
- The only cornerback in the NFL with longer arms than Emerson is Xavier Rhodes. Martin Emerson expects to be a top 50 pick, but he'll be a top 60 pick in this mock where New England drafts him. Martin Emerson can be a steal of New England if Bill Belichick and Matt Patricia manage to turn his weakness for zone coverage into a strength by working with him extensively in rookie minicamps and OTA's.
- New England now has Martin Emerson starting at field cornerback with Jalen Mills at boundary cornerback, with Jonathan Jones at nickel cornerback with Malcolm Butler at dime cornerback, and JoeJuan Williams at quarter cornerback. With Devin McCourty, Adrian Phillips, Kyle Dugger, and Jabrill Peppers complimenting those cornerbacks at safety giving New England incredible depth on their secondary once again.
Arizona Cardinals: Romeo Doubs, WR, Nevada
- Arizona gets a big body target to play on the outside as a number two receiver across from DeAndre Hopkins while Rondale Moore plays in the slot. You'd still have A.J. Green. The 6-1 204 lb Romeo Doubs is a perfect replacement for a number two target with Christian Kirk gone. Doubs led the Mountain West with 58 receptions, 1,002 receiving yards, and 9 receiving touchdowns in 2020. Doubs improved on that with 80 receptions, 1,109 receiving yards, and 11 receiving touchdowns in 2021.
- Romeo Doubs did well at the 2022 Reese's Senior Bowl. He also did well in pass catching drills at the 2022 NFL Combine before having a good day at Nevada's Pro Day.
Dallas Cowboys: Ed Ingram, LG, LSU
- The 6-3 317 lb Ed Ingram has the pass blocking, run blocking, zone blocking, pass blocking strength, run blocking strength, pass blocking footwork, and run blocking footwork to be a day 1 starter at guard in the NFL. Dallas drafts Ed Ingram as a replacement to Connor Williams since the drop off for quality guards begins after Ed Ingram.
Buffalo Bills: Devonte Wyatt, DT, Georgia
- The 6-2 307 lb Devonte Wyatt would make a good day 1 starter at 4-3 defensive tackle next to Ed Oliver. Some would argue this pick is a massive steal for the Bills and they wouldn't be wrong. Devonte Wyatt dominated the 2022 Reese's Senior Bowl, the 2022 NFL Combine, and Georgia's Pro Day despite only having 7 tackles for a loss 3 quarterback hurries, and 2.5 sacks in 2021. I had Jordan Davis, Perrion Winfrey, and Travis Jones as my top 3 defensive tackles with Devonte Wyatt coming in as my fourth best defensive tackle. Depspite this, you can make a case for any of those four defensive tackles going in the first round, as most have Wyatt as the second best defensive tackle behind Jordan Davis.
Atlanta Falcons: Brian Asamoah II, 3-4 MLB, Oklahoma
- The 6-0 222 lb Brian Asamoah II can play 4-3 right outside linebacker or 3-4 middle linebacker with his versatility. Brian Asomoah II had 56 solo tackles, 30 assisted tackles, 86 total tackles, 4 tackles for a loss, 1 sack, and 1 quarterback hurry with teams throwing away from him when he dropped back into coverage. Joseph Potter the co-host of my podcast described Brian Asamoah II as the best coverage linebacker in the 2022 NFL Draft. He's one of two linebackers to get an A+ grade for zone coverage for a linebacker in this years draft. He's one 3-4 middle linebacker that has a chance to beat out Rashad Evans, Tennessee's 2018 first round pick for the 3-4 middle linebacker job next to Deion Jones.
- So far, Atlanta retooled their entire linebacking core in this draft with Jermaine Johnson II at 3-4 right outside linebacker, Deion Jones at 3-4 middle linebacker, Rashad Evans orBrian Asamoah at 3-4 middle linebacker with the other linebacker in a depth role, and Drake Jackson at 3-4 left outside linebacker. Atlanta addressed cornerback through Free Agency so wide receiver, safety, defensive line, and a running back for depth are areas the Falcons can target later in the third round.
Green Bay Packers: David Bell, WR, Purdue
- Green Bay needs a replacement for Davante Adams. They get that replacement here with Purdue wide receiver David Bell who has the traits to be a future number one target despite his bad 40 time at the 2022 NFL Combine.
- The 6-1 212 lb David Bell had 86 receptions, 1,035 receiving yards and 7 receiving touchdowns as a true freshman in 2019. Bell had 53 receptions, 625 receiving yards, and a Big 10 best 8 receiving touchdowns in 2020. Bell had 93 receptions, 1,286 receiving yards, and 6 receiving touchdowns in 2021 after Rondale Moore left showcasing traits of a number one target for Aaron Rodgers.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Coby Bryant, CB, Cincinnati
- The 6-1 191 lb Coby Bryant did well in the 2022 Reese's Senior Bowl. Bryant went from a 4.55 40-time at the 2022 NFL Combine to a 4.31 40-time at Cincinnati's Pro Day. I gave Coby Bryant an A- grade in man coverage, zone coverage, and press coverage after watching him shine next to Ahmad Gardner with 11 deflections for pass breakups in 2021. Bryant can play in a cover 0, cover 1, cover 2, cover 3, or cover 4 scheme.
- He's a high football IQ guy and high character guy. Honestly, the only reason Coby Bryant slipped this far is because he doesn't always play with the game speed you'd like him to. He's competitive and doesn't take plays off. Still, you'd like to see his foot speed be quicker and more consistent at times as Bryant can compete with Jamel Dean and Sean Bunting-Murphy for the boundary cornerback role across from Carlton Davis while giving Tampa Bay some much needed depth at cornerback too.
San Francisco 49ers: Cam Taylor-Britt, CB, Nebraska
- San Francisco drafts a boundary cornerback to compliment Free Agent signing Charvarius Ward. The 5-10 200 lb Cam Taylor-Britt had 11 deflections from pass breakups in 2021.
- Cam Taylor-Britt ran a 4.38 40-time at the 2022 NFL Combine. He also got an A grade in man coverage, a C+ grade in zone coverage, and an A+ grade in press coverage. This guy wowed me with how violent he plays at times. Ahmad Gardner and Derek Stingley Jr. were the only cornerbacks to get A+ grades in all three coverage categories for man, zone, and press coverage. At the same time he needs to do a better job diagnosing routes.
- Cam Taylor-Britt is the first cornerback since those two first round corners to get an A+ grade in any of the three coverage categories I use to assess cornerbacks. This is the biggest reason why Cam Taylor-Britt snuck into the late part of my second round, and I cannot emphasize or stress that enough.
Kansas City Chiefs: Sam Williams, RE, Ole Miss
- Kansas City drafts another 4-3 defensive end for depth behind Frank Clark in the second round. This allows Kansas City to groom this player behind Frank Clark for a year before Kansas City cuts Frank Clark to save $21-million in cap space when the 2023 NFL Season arrives.
- The 6-4 261 lb Sam Williams had 9.5 tackles for a loss and 6 sacks as a freshman in 2019. Williams had 8 tackles for a loss and 4 sacks in 2020. Sam Williams put everything together in 2021 with 31 solo tackles, 26 assisted tackles, 57 total tackles, 16.5 tackles for a loss, 12.5 sacks, 8 quarterback hurries, 4 forced fumbles, 1 deflection from pass breakup, 1 fumble recovery, and 1 defensive touchdown on the fumble recovery in 2021. Williams had three prodcutive seasons at Ole Miss before declaring for the 2022 NFL Draft.
- Sam Williams impressed me at the 2022 Reese's Senior Bowl with his rip and swim moves. Williams also showed the versatility to play 4-3 right end, 4-3 left end, 3-4 right outside linebacker, and 3-4 left outside linebacker off the edge in Mobile during the 2022 Reese's Senior Bowl. Sam Williams also ran a 4.46 40-time at the 2022 NFL Combine.
- Sam Williams is an edge rusher that you can stash for depth and groom him into a starting role in either a 4-3 or a 3-4 defense. Kansas City can develop him behind Frank Clark for a year and Williams should be ready to replace Clark whenever the Chiefs decide they need to cut Clark to save cap space.
Cincinnati Bengals: Logan Hall, DT, Houston
- Cincinnati gets a defensive tackle for depth to push B.J. Hill last years backup to Larry Ogunjobi for the starting defensive tackle spot across from D.J. Reader. The 6-5 278 lb Logan Hall can line up at 4-3 right end, 4-3 defensive tackle, or 4-3 left end with his versatility. He can even play 3-4 defensive end at 3-4 right end or 3-4 left end too. Logan Hall had 24 solo tackles, 23 assisted tackles, 47 total tackles, 13 tackles for a loss, 6 sacks, and 3 quarterback hurries in 2021.
Denver Broncos: Darrian Beavers, 3-4 MLB, Cincinnati
- The 6-4 252 lb Darrian Beavers had 47 solo tackles, 53 assisted tackles, 100 total tackles, 12 tackles for a loss, 5 sacks, 2 quarterback hurries, 2 deflections from pass breakups, and 2 forced fumbles. Darrian Beavers had a good week at the 2022 Reese's Senior Bowl and you watch his film you see a player that can rush the quarterback as an edge rusher, stop the run, or drop back into coverge. Drafting Darrian Beavers gives Denver Josey Jewell, Baron Browning, Alex Singleton, and Darrian Beavers at linebacker for either a 4-2-5 nickel or a 3-4 base defense which are the two default defenses that Denver operates. Jewell is effective, but injury prone, and Singleton has never played in a 3-4 defense his entire career while Beavers has more familiarity with both a 4-3 and 3-4 scheme which is why he's a good fit for Denver at 64.
